Valentine's Day Makeup with MAC Wonder Woman Defiance
MAC Wonder Woman Look: Defiance
Just because it can be made to work… doesn’t mean it is worth buying. I really had to pack on the color to get it to show, and there was some issues with blending, because the shades were so stiff. I maintain my recommendation of “no buy” to the fullest!
You will need the following…
- Eyes: NARS Smudgeproof Eyeshadow Base (neutral eyeshadow base), MAC Defiance Eyeshadow (pale frosted pink), MAC Paradise Island Eyeshadow (petal pink), MAC Star Studded Eyeshadow (plummed pink), MAC Real Drama Eyeshadow (burgundy brown), Burberry Trench Eyeshadow, Urban Decay Perversion 24/7 Liner (black), MAC Victorious Opulash Mascara (purple)
- Face: NARS Sheer Glow Foundation (Punjab), Burberry Pressed Powder (03)
- Cheeks: MAC Mighty Aphrodite Blush (peach-pink)
- Lips: MAC Spitfire Lipstick (dark pink), MAC Wonder Woman Lipglass (red)
- Brushes: 249 (flat, firm brush), 239 (fluffy shadow brush), 222 (fluffy crease brush), 263 (angled eyeliner brush), 116 (dense blush brush)
- Substitutes: Defiance = Vanilla pigment; Paradise Island – Pen ‘n’ Pink; Star Studded = Fig. 1; Real Drama = Sketch; Mighty Aphrodite = Deep Throat; Spitfire = Up the Amp + Girl About Town; Wonder Woman = Russian Red
For eyes, start by applying Smudgeproof as your eyeshadow base all over the eye area with the 249. Using the 239, apply Paradise Island eyeshadow on the inner half of the lower lid. Lightly blend Star Studded eyeshadow onto the outer third of the lid and crease with the 222. Apply Defiance eyeshadow on the inner tear duct and crease with the 239. Blend Trench eyeshadow with the crease shade and highlight the brow bone. Bring everything together by applying Perversion on the lower lash line. Finish by sweeping lashes with Victorious Opulash mascara.
For cheeks, apply Mighty Aphrodite blush on the apples of the cheeks and sweep upwards towards the temple with the 116.
For lips, apply Spitfire lipstick first, then layer Wonder Woman lipglass for a complementing lip.
i’m thinking the fresh cut palette from spring ’09 might work better than this. it’s more pink-based than this one, though.
I love that foundation on you and you are so good with lip combos I love it. I’m def gonna pass on this whole collection thanks for the reviews.
Thanks, Diana!
i really wish i had a crease but no im stuck w/ a monolid 🙁 so i cant do all this makeup
🙁 You could try reversing it, though!
Yeah if you start with the darker colour at the bottom and smoke it upwards, blending in the lighter colours i think it looks great. I often do this anyway even though i have a crease
This is so pretty Christine! The eyes are really soft and smoky, plus love the pink tones. Sadly, I was totally un-impressed with the Wonder Woman collection, completely agree with you. PS: like the settings on your camera, the lips look awesome.
Thanks a lot, Grace! 🙂
Very Pretty look! Love the lip combo. But I’ll def take your advice and not pick it up a palette. You saved me 40$. Thanks for all your hard work!
In person, is the purple mascara noticeable? I was thinking about picking it up but if you cant even tell I’m going to bother.
Thanks again Christine
I notice it up close, but it doesn’t look like WHOA! from afar.
It is such a shame to hear that the quality defiance is so crappy, because this is truly a stunning look. I may have to try to recreate it with the dupes that you mentioned!
Definitely try it with the dupes! 🙂
Star Studded is such a pretty color. I’m curious, why did you decide to do a look with this palette when you don’t recommend it? I know the colors are appropriate for Valentine’s Day, but I’m personally not planning to get this if the quality is so poor.
Because readers have asked to see it in a look 🙂 You can also not truly test a product if you do not actually use it!
I do like the lip on you. Too bad you had to work so hard to pack on the color 🙁
Thanks, Elle!
super pretty!
Thank you, Tiffany!
I never would have thought you used so many eyeshadow! It only looks like 3 colors. If you cut it down to 3 colors, what would you use?
You could not use Defiance, which is there to brighten, though you will lose dimension from the lack of textures.
This might be off subject but what camera do you use? Your pictures always have awesome quality and that’s why I always come to your blog to see swatches.
Nikon D90! Thanks!
Love this pink pretty look, especially for Valentine. Nars Sheer Glow looks great on you just like Make Up For Ever Hd foundations, which one do you prefer the most and why. Thx Christine.
I prefer MUFE HD because it actually lasts for more than a few hours.
You look absolutely beautiful in these colours, Christine- the lips look just luscious. That said, I’m looking at the image thinking that I have products I could use as dupes, or that I know things I could get that would be cheaper and easier than buying the WW products. Thanks for at least giving me some ideas for a look!
Thank you so much, KFM! 🙂
You’re so gorgeous! I love everything about this look. Too bad the products aren’t so great 🙁
Thank you, Ann!
Love this look!! although i would LOVE if you could make one with lady justice. I’m not as convinced with many things form this collection as I was with other ones, I hope the collection arrives punctually to Mexico. 🙂
Will try to do so!
beautiful..
Thanks, Fran!
Even though the quality of the e/s quad is not so hot, you can’t even tell from the photos that the shadows are super difficult to work with. Which just means you rocked it like a pro! 😀 The shades look beautiful together and the lip combo is awesomeness. Maybe worth checking out the lip stuff then! 🙂
Thanks a lot, Deb!
I’m really digging the lip look! I didn’t think about how those two colors would go together.
Thanks, Melody!
Love the lip colour !
Glad you liked it, Bernice!
the lips are definitely hot..!
such a disappointment though..it looks very pretty on you but if it’s hard to do/takes a lot of time then this is not worth buying..i appreciate that you do this for all of us (your readers)
xoxo nessa
Thank you, Nessa!
Oooh, I like the purple mascara. It’s subtle but still noticeable. I might have to purchase it.
For the lipglass, do you mean Athena’s Kiss? Wonder Woman is red… it doesn’t sound right lol.
This look is beautiful! I’ll definitely try to re-create it for valentines day this year 🙂
It’s Wonder Woman! 🙂
This lip color looks awesome on you!
Thanks, Andrea Nicole!
That is a straight up hot lip.
Yay!
This is so cute on you. I beat your boyfriend likes helping out and getting to see all these gorg photos of you.
Thanks, Amanda!
You have such luminous skin! I was wondering if you’ve tried Lancome’s Teint Miracle foundation?
I haven’t!
This looks very pretty! But now I really get what you are talking about with the poor quality: despite your stellar blending skills, the colors look kind of.. blah. I’m totally skipping the quads.
Thank you, Lena!
Yowyas! That lip is stunning! I love how you combine lipsticks with lipglosses to create entirely new colours! Pinks always look amazing on you! Look at all the exclamation marks I’m using! (Excuse me for getting really excited from that swatch). Overall, I don’t wear much make-up but I invest everything on my puckers and am partial to bright lip colours. Browsing your lip swatches is a always delectable experience. Your lips always look like candy!
Jenna
Thank you so much, Jenna! 🙂
I use exclamation points all the time, it’s all good!
i realy love this look .. its very pretty
Thanks, Chetali!
This looks pretty, but what I really like about this post is your honesty! It actually made me smile!
Thanks so much!
That is actually really really pretty! But I agree, just because it can be made to work doesn’t always mean you should try, esp. when you have better substitutes… Really appreciate the effort here though because I know there will be people getting the palette, color pay-off issues aside.
Thank you, Jean!
Oh and the lip photo is stunning! I swear sometimes you make it difficult to choose lippies because almost everything looks good on you!
the puprple mascara is barely there…thats sad.i really wanted to buy it.
pretty look! I love it!
Thank you!
With all the pretty looks you always come up with I start wondering myself if you have ever taken any makeup classes Christine! I’ m very impressed with your perfect eye make up techniques! I’d love to be that skilled especially with eyeshadow application, well I guess I need to practise a lot more!
I haven’t!
Thank you! 🙂
May I just say, I love the way to take pictures of your lips. It gives me chills every time, they are so beautiful haha (dang, sounds like I’d have some weird lip fetish or something, which is not the case!! haha)
The look is so pretty, it’s so sad that the palette is such a pain to use :/
Thanks, Margot! 🙂
You look amazing Christine! Great look, I love it!! I have been following your amazing site for a while but this is the first time I write so I take this chance to thank you SO MUCH for your incredible hard work and dedication, you provide such a valuable service to all of us, so thank you for your amazing website, your dedication and hard work!! And a big kiss to gorgeous Mellan!! Paola (all the way from North West of Italy, currently under heavy snow)
Thank you so much, Paola! 🙂
I love the lip color. It goes nicely with what you chose to do.
Thanks a lot, Ashley Sarah!
I love this look, you look very pretty!
Thanks, Jennifer!
This look is beautiful! Too bad you had such a problem with the eyeshadows 🙁
Thank you, Lauren!
I’m really loving the way you’re taking your lip pictures lately! Great quality!
Thanks, Carolanne!
It’s a pretty look – I might try to recreate it with some stuff I already own as I won’t be getting these products. Luckily I have Vanilla Pigment, Fig 1, Sketch, Deep Throat, Up the Amp, Girl About Town and Russian Red l/g…so I just have to find a substitute for Paradise Island! I’m sure MAC Petal Worship or one of Urban Decay’s pinks would do the trick 🙂
I think that would work!
Pretty! I love the lip colour.
Thanks!
I only have three things on my wonder woman list, Pink Power, Heroine, and Bad Bad Black 🙂 Thanks so much for all of your pics and swatches! Telling me about this site is the best thing my MAC people have done for me.
No problem! Thank your MAC MAs for me for recommending Temptalia 🙂
Which part of the Mighty Aphrodite Blush duo did you use? Pink Coral or the Dark Berry?
The lighter side!
Christine I have a question. Were the wonder woman colors from the pink palette a tougher texture? When I saw the pics of the palettes, it seemed like colors didn’t look as pigment.
Yes – they were very thin and hard – like you really had to dig into the pan to get color.
Hi Christine! I love the look, but there was one thing I noticed: you mentioned Urban Decay Perversion eyeliner as being a copper liner, but isn’t it black?
Thanks, Chris! It was just a mistake – it is black.
THE most perfect lips on the planet! 🙂 Beautiful look on you, Christine.
Thank you, Melissa!
every single color you place on your lips looks amazing!!
Aw, thanks, Dee!
Thanks for posting this look despite the shadow being on your no-buy list. This is a nice soft look for v-day but also the spring time. Gives me inspiration to pull out my pinks!
Thank you, Ru!
beautiful eye combo, christine! too bad the palette’s quality turned out so crappy. luckily i have dupes for all those colors in my 3 Pro palettes.
Thanks, Marcela!
Very subtle and classically pretty.
Thanks, Niki!
Thanks for your honest reviews. It’s dissappointing b/c the colors are pretty.
No prob, Shanda 🙂
This is pretty, but I think I actually prefer the green quad. At this point, I think I have to go to the store and look at the quads in person. To me, there are a lot of qualities in the E/s that just don’t seem to show up on the computer. I often think I will like one e/s, when looking at the computer, and when I get to the store, that e/s doesn’t look as great as I thought it would and I like something else completely different a lot better. But, we are having a blizzard right now, and I won’t be able to get out for the next couple of days. Something to look forward to this weekend.
Hope you’re able to get out soon!
OMG the lip colour is DIVINE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks, Olena!
Gorgeous! I tried a similar lip combo today (Lime Crime Airborne Unicorn + MAC Venetian) and I so love the results, I have to do purple & red together more often.
Thanks, Nora! 😀 YAY!
pink with deeper pinks/violets are my favorite. But this year I’m thinking sultry eyes and nude lips. I have big eyes so I really want to play them up plus I like to leave the lips soft/natural so I can play kissyface without worry ;p
I purchased this palette and found it fairly pigmented:) I guess you have to work the two middle shades a bit, but overall I think it was worth it… The colors are very pretty!! Thanks for all your awesome reviews!!!!
Yay! 🙂
I have this palette and I never would have thought to use the technique you used. I love the way it looks!
