Urban Decay Ransom Deluxe Eyeshadow

Urban Decay Ransom Deluxe Eyeshadow ($18.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “vibrant iridescent purple.” It’s a medium-dark blue-based violet purple with a frosted finish. MAC Pink Union is warmer, less blue-based. Urban Decay Blue Bus is bluer. MAC Parfait Amour is comparable but has more of an iridescence. Inglot #379 is a matte version. Urban Decay Ecstasy is less blue-based.

The Deluxe Eyeshadow is one of my favorite formulas, because it’s dense, silky smooth, and feels like butter against the skin.  Ransom is not the best example of the formula, though, because it doesn’t have the really rich color payoff that comes with this range.  The pigmentation is good (and it may even be great for a purple shade, generally speaking), but it falls short of excellence.  It doesn’t apply quite as smoothly as the rest of the range either.  When I wear this shade alone, it holds on well, and there wasn’t any creasing or fading after eight hours.  One of my favorite things about the Deluxe Eyeshadow range is that they’re nearly double the size of Urban Decay’s regular Eyeshadows at only a dollar more.

I have all the Deluxe shadows and I agree, Ransom disappoints because it looks so vibrant in the pan. I have the same problem with Frigid and Adore. I guess it’s something about the deep blues/ purples that don’t work as well in that formula.

Seems to be true with purple in general – MAC’s formula is a drier, harder pressed formula, but they struggle with purples. Even Inglot, which has more of a powdery but softer feel than MAC, struggles, when they’re excellent with pigmentation more often than not!

This is one of my favorite eyeshadows! I’ve used it for years. I love the formula of the deluxe shadows. So glad you reviewed it!

I totally agree with you about Ransom’s formula! I love the color so I refuse to give up on it, but the pigmentation is relatively sheer compared to the rest of the shadows in this line. You really have to pack it on to get true-to-the-pan color. I’m so glad you’re reviewing some of these, though; I think Urban Decay’s Deluxe range of eyeshadows is seriously underrated!

I used to be a DIRE HARD purple e/s lover and collector but have strayed away from any more purple single e/s. I have this one as a single e/s and have it in a few sets. I agree with you Christine, it’s a bit disappointing. Beautiful to look at but performance is MEH!
