Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil: Discontinued Shades with Comparison Swatches

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil
Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil

Several shades of Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil ($19.00 for 0.04 oz.) have been discontinued. Urban Decay made suggestions for what to use instead, and these are my thoughts on them along with comparison swatches.

1999 is a reddish plum with gold, plum, and bronze shimmer. It is much redder and browner compared to Vice; and then too red compared to Underground. Neither is comparable.

Binge is a cool-toned, navy blue with a pearly sheen. Sabbath is darker, cooler-toned, and matte, so it has a completely different effect when worn, as Sabbath is so much more intense.

Covet is a deepened green-based teal with a pearly sheen. It is much greener compared to Junkie, which has larger sparkle (gold, at that) and a stronger blue base.

Crash is a darkened, plummy eggplant with plum pearl. It is closest to Rockstar, as Rockstar is just slightly darker. Delinquent is purpler, less plum.

Deviant is a medium blue with silver sparkle. It is just slightly more subdued compared to Abyss, but the two are rather similar. Chaos is nothing like either, and I would not even consider it in the same family!

Eldorado is medium gold with strong orange undertones and a slightly metallic finish. Goldmine is yellower and less metallic. Honey (which has long been discontinued) is nothing like either gold.

Flipside is a medium blue with a hint of teal and a pearly sheen. Deep End is noticeably bluer.

Graffiti is a springy, grass green with silver sparkle. I find that it’s hard to dupe this shade, and Freak is lighter and significantyl warmer, more yellowy in comparison.

Gunmetal is a darkened gray with neutral undertones and a pearly sheen. Uzi is much, much darker (closer to black), while Mushroom is so much browner. Neither is at all similar!

Lucky is a darkened copper with a slightly metallic finish. Scorch is lighter, more golden–it’s not really that orange-copper kind of color.

Lust is a cool-toned, dark purple with slight pearl. Chaos is by no means a dupe; as it is lighter, brighter, and has a lot of blue in it.

Ransom is a medium-dark, pink-ish purple with a slight pearl to its finish. Psychedelic Sister is pinker, so it appears a bit warmer and brighter, while layering Asphyxia over it helps it appear closer, it is still brighter.

Generally speaking, I don’t think most of them are really dupes. They eliminated cool-toned purples in place of pink and plum-based ones, and I think now there’s a hole in the color range as a result. Graffiti is a more unusual shade, and Freak is no replacement; it’s a nice addition, but it’s not a replacement.  I also think Lust and Lucky have no real comparable shades in the range.   Products and shades get discontinued, so it’s not a surprise to see some of these make an exit to accommodate new shades.  I recommend checking our eyeliner comparison series to see if maybe another brand has something closer to a shade you’ll be missing (or stock up on it before it’s gone).

These swatches definitely make it look like the formula has improved with these new shades, but I still think I might grab Deviant and Lucky before they disappear completely.

Amanda Avatar

ill be picking up lust, lucky and covet then, other then that it almost looks as the new shades are just more pigmented versions of the older ones!

Rafaela Avatar

I didn’t realize they were discontinuing so many shades! This post inspired me to use my Gunmetal to dinner tonight!
I’ve always wanted to try 1999, despite always reading bad reviews about it. lol

Heather Avatar

I think its a matter of oppinion I like 1999 enough that even though i have hardly made a dent in the one i have I’m going to pick up a second one. I love glitter eyeliners though and thats really what you get with 1999. There are a bunch of Diff colors of glitter in it and I’m going to buy the new vice for the same reason

AZ Avatar

I love 1999! I may have to find myself a backup somewhere =/ It looks a lot better on than swatched. On me it doesn’t look red at all.

Elyse Avatar

I think this post will take some of the panic away, haha! Looks like, for the most part, the new ones are indeed better– at least in pigmentation.

There’ll be a couple I’ll miss, but in the end, you can’t please everybody huh!

Sara Avatar

I forgot how amazing Covet is… I might have to get that and/or Lucky before they are gone. I’m hoping that some of these pencils make their way to the Sale section on UD’s website so that I can pick them up at a discount!

Emily Avatar

I’m very sad they are discontinuing Lust. Lust is one of my favorite eyeliners. Chaos is way too blue to be even considered similar. I really think without Lust, there’s a hole in their eyeliner range, as far as purples go.

Thank you for the comparisons – I will have to stock up or possibly go with MUFE 11L.

Marianna Avatar

I’m with you – Lust was my gateway drug to the UD 24/7 Glide-On line! There are some good dupes out there though – I’ve found that Tarino Tarintino’s Amethyst Android is really close to Lust in both quality and color. The purple Milani Liquif’eye is also a good dupe, but it seems to irritate my eyes, especially when I wear it on my waterline. (I haven’t tried the MUFE one)

Liz Avatar

Bummer! I love Eldorado. Then I saw the swatch of Honey and thought, wow, that’s even better… then read your sentence about it having been long discontinued. I would have thought those shades would be crazy popular.

chris Avatar

I am so sad I never got to try Honey and Lucky – Lucky would be the bomb on my blue green eyes I suppose!! I have graffiti and covet and am sad i wont be able to repurchase them.

Nichole Avatar

Oh no!!! Crash is my ‘go to’ plum liner. I liked using 1999 on my waterline and lower lashline for plum looks too. I love layering Covet over a matte dark blue. Ordering backups now.

Carrie Avatar

I personally believe that because it was one of those colors that seemed to be included as the give-away mini with palettes or in the eyeliner sets that people simply didn’t need to buy it, hence it being discontinued. It still sucks that they didn’t add a new cool toned purple. Not everyone can pull off warmer shades!

GG Avatar

The new color empire is a cool purple. It is matte and much darker than ransom, but defenetly blue toned. I use rockstar a lot but lately prefer empire because I look better in cool toned colors. I recommend you check it out.

Hi Christine, do you have a list of the discontinued shades? I know you haven’t featured any of the black colours but I assume they haven’t been discontinued! thanks.

Christine Avatar

Hi!

All the shades here are the ones that UD listed as discontinued per their website 🙂 These are, at least, the recently discontniued ones (e.g. Honey was discontinued a long time ago!). Here is the full list of what is staying/permanent: http://www.temptalia.com/new-product-alert-urban-decay-247-glide-on-eye-pencils-27-new-additions

18thCenturyFox Avatar

:::patting back::: This is a safe place for you to be right now. I still miss Acid Rain eyeshadow, it gets easier with time but it never goes completely away.

Lindsay Avatar

Thank you… it’s tough when they DC one of your all time favorite shades. I’m gonna cradle the little nub of Honey I have left and wipe a tear from my eye while singing “You’ll Always Be My Baby” to it… I’m definitely not overreacting… 😛

AnGeLwInGz Avatar

Christine, thank you so much for dedicating all that time to the UD 24/7’s. It was extremely helpful to me as a collector. I made a list of all the shades I want and I think I’m just gonna buy them separately (since they’re permanent i believe?) like 2 per month, instead of forking over the $295 all at once. Even though the set is a great deal it will end up costing me less in the long run because I don’t need doubles and triples (even quads in some cases) of existing shades, dupes/ near dupes, or purples because I just don’t wear them. Once again, much appreciation.

Amber Avatar

I have so many of Zero! Especially the mini version they include with like every pallette. I’ve just started tossing one in the zip pocket of all my purses…then no matter which purse I walk out the door with, I always have a decent touch-up liner if needed 🙂

Heather Avatar

I never wear black eyeliner A its boring and B it makes my pasty self look goth. I have so many zero’s now that I have started giving them away to my boring friends who I’m trying to get to at least try something like Urban Decay!

EAM Avatar

Gunmetal is going away? Good thing I saw your post and checked my stash: I seem to have lost the tiny stub I had left. Time to order another, quick.

Wwendalynne Avatar

How can it be that I am going to miss 1999 when I haven’t even tried it.. Because I think this is the first time I’ve actually noticed it. It’s lovely! Will have to see if I can grab one somewhere while it still exists.

Puffnstuff Avatar

And is there ANYTHING comparable to honey? I tried a gold Milani pencil and it irritated the ish out of my eyes. They were burning and watery it was horrible.

Sara Avatar

I’m a huge fan of the L’oreal HIP gold eyeliner that is given as a close dupe. It’s not identical, but it’s incredibly pigmented and it didn’t irritate my eye when I wore it on my waterline (and my eyes are pretty sensitive to bad makeup). I picked it up at Ulta with a coupon!

Lulee Avatar

This kind of annoys me. The first high end makeup product I remember buying were 3 UD eyeliners in Ransom, Deviant, and Electric when they were only $15 (!!) and before they were so hyped up. Those 3 are still my most used non-black eyeliners to this day. Now, they are $19 a piece and two of them are being discontinued. I will be sad to see both deviant and ransom go, i really loved them.

Alex Avatar

I’m completely with you. I’ve been trying to find alternative eyeliners that I like lately, because I’m frustrated that the price of these has been continuously rising. Lucky, Graffiti and Lust were my three favorites, and the dupes really aren’t similar.

This is pretty much the final nail in the coffin in terms of me not wanting to purchase UD products.

Sabriel Avatar

I can see why so many people were upset about Lucky! What a lovely reddish copper!

The replacement looks like better quality in most cases, but Goldmine looks *awful* next to Eldorado and Honey.

Veronica Avatar

Shame they’re discontinuing all those blue-based purples. 🙁 They’re really the only kind of purple liner I enjoy wearing, and the UD 24/7 are one of the few pencils I’ve tried that will actually wear on my lower lash line without migrating easily. Ah well, it’s not like I wear pencil liner often. 😀

Shea Avatar

If you use a wet liner brush you can use the deluxe shadow version of Ransom as a liner. It is still on UD’s site for $6. That is what I am doing with Graffiti

Veronica Avatar

Unfortunately, my lower lash is too sensitive to use powder onit, so this isn’t an option for me. But thank you very much for the suggestion regardless, Shea. 🙂

akatonbo Avatar

NYX’s Slide-On pencil in Jewel is a near-perfect dupe for UD 1999 and the formula is very similar in consistency as well. It’s also probably worth comparing NYX Golden Bronze to UD Lucky; the match isn’t as anywhere near close as Jewel and 1999 but it’s still got potential.

Kesha Avatar

I recall the dupes that UD provided for their discontinued e/s being off more often than not. I wonder how they come up with the list for what they think is a good dupe…

t_zwiggy Avatar

Why would they discontinue the cool toned purples? 🙁 It’s the only colored liner that looks good on me (besides olive). Pink tones = rabbit eyes!

Tish Avatar

I don’t know about most of you but I’m quite disappointed. While I do like some of the new colours released (blues and browns/bronzes) and the addition of Whiskey to the permanent range, I’m extremely bummed that Covet (quite possibly my most favourite green eyeliner), Baked, Lucky, Honey, Lust and 1999 go. Sadly, none of the purple eyeliners appeal to me other than my forever favourite Rockstar. Heck, none of UD’s suggestions as replacement of the now discontinued shades even come close. I need to find a backup of Baked and Honey stat before they’re forever gone.

PS
Thank you Christine for such thorough and comprehensive review/swatch and comparison posts on all these new colours from UD’s 24/7 eyeliner range.

Kristen Avatar

I agree, I’m super bummed. I didn’t realize that they were discontinuing some of their best shades! I’ve been through I don’t know how many Lucky’s, Lust’s, and 1999’s… and I sure am glad I have a Covet in my stash that still has some life to it. I have to get my hands on another Lust and 1999 before their gone, though- because those new purples (besides Rockstar) are no good for me! Ugh!

18thCenturyFox Avatar

Somehow I have 10+ of these liners and never paid full price. But this post sent me out to order Deviant, 1999 and Binge. It didn’t hurt that AmorePacific is one of the 100 perks.

Liz Avatar

What a bummer! Lucky is one of my absolute favorite eye liners! I typically use bourbon and smudge lucky over the top to create a soft copper smokey eye look that’s very day time friendly.

I question the wisdom behind discontinuing Covet-with teal and blue being this Spring’s ‘it’ color.

Ryou Avatar

Christine, did you do a plum/purple eyeliner comparison post recently? I know you did a few years back, but I can’t seem to find it in the link you provided in the post.

Heather Avatar

Thank you thank you thank you so much for doing this! This is great! It really helps me to figure out which shades I need to rush out and buy(discontinued) and which ones I can wait and save up for. Definitly going to have to hit the stores for another 1999 and a covet. But its very frustrating because even before the new line up was announced they seem to have stopped shipping the discontinued shades over a month ago I have been to every ulta and sephora within an hour drive and not found half these colors in stock and I know my local ulta’s havnt had new stock on these in over a month!

Ani_BEE Avatar

I had not realized Mushroom was so close to Stray Dog in shade. Happy I have Stray Dog.

Eldorado is still my favorite gold for filling my eyebrows in to match my golden tone wig. Honey looks great though.

MissLovely210 Avatar

I’ve always wanted a bunch of these pencils. But the $20+ price tag for each has always stopped me. Especially when I wanted more than one. I found myself in Ulta with swatches of one hand of the UD pencils and swatches on the other of potential dupes from other more affordable brands. Found five 🙂

Meg Avatar

For those looking for dupes, the NYX Slide-On liners have quite a few. Tropical Green is a dupe for Covet. Jewel is a dupe for 1999. Purple Blaze is a dupe for Ransom. Sunrise Blue is a dupe for Deviant. Golden Bronze is very close to Lucky, but I think it might have just a bit more red in it. They are very similar in formula to the 24/7 pencils and are only 8 bucks a pop. Hope that helps!

Beth W Avatar

I went to Sephora today to buy Lucky but it was nowhere to be found. I was informed by the salesgirl that it had been discontinued! I am TRULY devestated!! It is THE PERFECT coppery bronze eyeliner like no other I have seen. The so-called “replacements” for Lucky are horrid and nowhere close to being as fabulous!!! PLEASE BRING BACK LUCKY!!!!!!!
