Urban Decay 24/7 Concealer Pencils

Urban Decay will add four shades of 24/7 Concealer Pencils ($18.00 for 0.12 oz.) this spring to extend the shade range. I have to test out the formula, though I don’t make any guarantees when or if I will review (I’m more focused on clearing out the holiday backlog and then focusing on limited edition spring shades). Meanwhile, I thought I’d get swatches up! For shade descriptions, see this post. I suspect these will make their way online in the next couple of weeks.

The product’s texture looks nice, but I wish these were released as an automatic pencil or stick instead. It seems like the creaminess might make them a pain to sharpen.

Hi Christine,
While I’m happy to see UD add some darker colors to their line of concealers, the new colors still seem pretty light. Do you think KGB or MIA6 would work for me? I”m NW45. Thanks for your help! : )

Sunny Avatar

What happened to the MIA6 swatch lol? I’m saying my shade is FBI, though at the moment I don’t really feel the need for an under-eye concealer (one of the good things about having monolids is you don’t have enough skin under your eyes to develop into dark bags). Does this work well when it comes to covering acnes?

Sunny Avatar

Nah it’s not a problem. It’s actually pretty cute after all the other perfect swatches you do 🙂 Kind of like a blooper that brings a smile to everyone’s face!

Dusty Avatar

I admit I busted up when I saw that last swatch… I had the whole thing play out in my brain: You swatching, swatching and swatching and then finally, in the throws of a breakdown, you just start yelling “WHY do I DO THIS?!?!” and poking at your arm!

It’s actually QUITE funny in my head… I also admit that I’m a bit of a drama queen 😉

I don’t REALLY want you to have a breakdown though 🙂

Ari Avatar

I don’t usually fall for gimmicks, but… those names? Genius. Instantly need one. *g* Thanks for the great swatches; I’m looking forward to the review.

Nicole Avatar

FBI is calling to me. I hope my gut instinct about it being the best match for me is right. I totally want to tell people I have the FBI in my bag /nerd.

Merty Avatar

MIA6? Is this a typo or really the name? Because the organization is MI6 🙂 I wish Urban Decay was available where I live, I love the creaminess of these.

ugh. i don’t know why it’s such a big deal for makeup companies to cater to brown women. They always go to tan (dark tan, if we are lucky) and stop. Brown women are always being left out of the picture. It’d be in their best interest to broaden their demographic, at least..in my opinion.

Isabel Avatar

I couldn’t agree more. My complexion is light (guess it’s a NC25) but I get really angry when I see there’s no makeup for brown and dark brown girls. We’re all women. We all want to use suitable makeup. Brown and dark brown girls have the same right to feel pretty and comfortable as fairy and light skin girls.

Giselle Avatar

I wish i liked these pencils but they’re wayyy too creamy. They sink into tiny lines and melt away after less than an hour for me 🙁

Even as a fair skinned white girl I find UD’s lack of darker shades to be a little disconcerting. I know the darker end of the spectrum is a weak point for a lot of cosmetics lines, but with UD it looks like if you’re any darker than a tan Latina they’re not thinking of you! That may be forgivable for a first launch, but to still have that oversight after adding new shades? It kind of bothers me that a brand I shop with would be so diversity unfriendly.

Jenn Avatar

I agree to a point…but I don’t necessarily think they are trying to be diversity unfriendly. Frankly, sad as it it, I think it’s more of a numbers game, do they really make much profit in this area of their line? Honestly I doubt it. They are known for their eye products, some lip products, but I don’t know too many people who use their foundations, concealers, etc. At the same time, maybe if they did expand to a wider range of colors people would use them more? Maybe that’s what they are trying to do, slowly expand their color range to see if people WILL branch out. I don’t know if their products are that good. I am extremely fair and their face products won’t work for me either as they are too dark and not the right match for me, it would be nice if they had an array as huge as say MAC or MUFE, but I don’t see them as being that widespread of a brand.

Julia Avatar

I agree to a certain extent, but as a fair-skinned woman myself, I am a bit offended on behalf of my African American friends that the MI6 shade is referred to in UD’s promotional material as deepest/cocoa, but based on swatches, the shade is clearly tan. If they set out to create a cocoa shade, why not make it cocoa??!

queenfrostine Avatar

I realize it is a numbers game and I’m not suggesting that UD as a brand should feel obligated to have an extensive range of dark shades but it looks bad when their darkest shade is the color of a spray-on St. Tropez tan. There are lots of darker skin ladies who feel ignored and left out by the bulk of the cosmetics industry and I don’t think it’s good business when your concealer and foundation lines make those of most drugstore brands look inclusive even if those products aren’t your bread and butter.

WARPAINT and Unicorns Avatar

I’m glad to see a pale tone like CIA but it look pretty pink/red tone for a concealer to me. Why pink when a concealer should be blocking out redness. lol

I’ll be checking out DEA in stores when they come out as I look neutral to yellow.

Sarah Avatar

Does anyone know the exact release date? I checked out the originals in sephora today and they’re actually really nice. They’re very easy to pass up if you’re not looking for them. Can’t wait for the new release!

Dini Avatar

Love to see that new colors are being added, but still waiting for even darker colors. Can’t wait to hear what those who use these colors have to say about how they work! 🙂

BethM Avatar

The lightest shade is too dark and yellow for me. It’s extremely difficult for me to find concealers that are both pale enough AND with pink undertones.

Madelynn Avatar

Christine, is there any way you can add single stripe swatches of all colors down your arm to compare warm/cool tones more easily? I know you’re a busy woman, so it’s only a suggestion. :]

are Avatar

Yuck. These are WAY too pigmented and would obviously be easy to detect on the skin – and look like they’d be uncomfortable to wear. All that, for a whopping $18?? For a concealer? Unless it’s got skin-care properties like ByTerry, why on earth would you?

Mariella Avatar

I REALLY want to give these concealer pencils a try. I’m likely DEA or FBI (stupid names; I like names that give an indication of skin tone). The only thing I do not like is that they need to be sharpened. I’d probably have to pop this into the freezer and that might end up changing the consistency permanently, which concerns me. Why couldn’t they just make these “twist up” like MAC Greasepaints?

Dia Avatar

Oh my gosh, I’m glad I’m not the only one who looked at these and thought, “Look at all those shades of white people!” I mean, I’m rather fair myself (half-white half-asian) but this is a bit much.

Tracy Avatar

Oooh… the packaging is sooo attractive, might not be the most convenient but the pencil that you can sharpen is original ! I want one just because of that !

Allie Avatar

Disappointed in both the lack of darker or lighter tones here. Not that I wear concealer, but clearly UD would not be the place to start looking.

Amija Avatar

I freakin hate how they leave out the brown girls! That’s exactly why I can’t take UD seriously. Besides UDPP and shadow, they don’t do anything for me.

Lisa Avatar

excited about this…any chance we can get swatches side by side? Like all in a row? I realize you are super busy so understand if you’re not able to.

Ofelia Avatar

I saw these at Sephora…I love love love how creamy they are…the opacity is to die for a little went a very long way BUT the sharpening was the deal breaker to me…
