Too Faced Natural Matte Eye Palette
Too Faced Natural Matte Eye Palette

Too Faced Natural Matte Eye Palette ($36.00 for 0.39 oz.) includes nine neutral-hued eyeshadows that are all matte in finish. The lightest and darkest shades seem to have some issues; the lightest ones were on the powdery/chalky side, while the darker shades were powdery enough that they had poorer color payoff or were more difficult to blend. They wore a little longer than the ones in the Sugar Pop palette, on average, which was nice. There are a few shades in the palette that are really silky and smooth and apply well, but then the duds bring down the palette’s overall rating.

Heaven is a light, subtly yellow-leaning beige with a matte finish. The texture was moderately powdery and dusty, which gave it a more chalky look on my skin (on fairer skin it may be less noticeable). It had semi-opaque color payoff and lasted for seven hours on me. Inglot #353 (P, $6.00) is lighter. Inglot #353 (P, $6.00) is lighter. Urban Decay Bleach (LE, $18.00) is warmer. Too Faced Rockabilly (P, $16.00) is lighter, brighter. Cashmere Bunny is a medium taupe brown with neutral-to-warm undertones and a matte finish. It had fairly good color payoff with a thin but not too powdery texture that worked decently. It lasted for eight hours before fading. Kat Von D Renholder (P, ) is more shimmery, darker. MAC Charcoal Brown (P, $16.00) is darker. Dior Mirage (761) (P, $30.00) is darker, cooler. Sexpresso is a dark brown with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had so-so pigmentation, but the texture was powdery to work with, and it was harder to blend (which is always frustrating when it is a deeper shade). It started to fade after seven and a half hours of wear. Chanel Charming #4 (LE, ) is warmer. Make Up For Ever M626 Neutral Brown (P, $21.00) is darker, cooler. Kat Von D Shadow Box (P, ) is darker. Risque is a dark, neutral brown with a matte finish. It was semi-sheer, dry, and powdery, which made it a pain to work with and prone to fading within seven and a half hours of wear. NARS Bali (P, $24.00) is darker, warmer. MAC Dance in the Dark (LE, $16.00) is darker, cooler. Tom Ford Beauty She Wolf #1 (LE, ) is darker, cooler. Nudie is a light-medium, taupe brown with warm, yellow-ish undertones and a matte finish. Thanks so much, Christine! One more question: have you tried the It Cosmetics Naturally Pretty matte palette or the Viseart Neutral Matte palette? Sorry, I guess that’s technically two questions!

I really want an all-matte palette like this! I just wish this one performed better. And a few more exciting colors would have been nice. Then again, it’s a ‘natural’ palette for a reason I guess, lol.

Nicole Avatar

Oh no, bummer! I bought this last week and it is still in the box! I am glad you reviewed it now! I bought it for travelling mainly and I was realled in by the cute packaging, lol.I haven’t opened it for a few reasons: I have a ton of neutral palettes; It was an impulse buy that I was worried I may regret;I recently bought the KVD Shade and Light palette and I think they are pretty similar. I am going to return it. thanks for saving me some $! . I really wish Too faced would work on their formula. I think I am about to give up on their shadows. 🙁

Too Faced spring palettes just seem so lacking in quality this year. Just disappointing. Worse still is that we KNOW they really could have done a better job. Must say though that I love Strapless!

Katherine T. Avatar

I love the cute Too Faced packaging, and the colors are pretty, but the shadows look like a mixed bag. But if you really like this palette, with primer, you can probably bring the scores up half a point to point.

Lisa Avatar

I have a Too Faced palette from a few years ago, and I’ve never really liked it due to the chalky/powdery quality. I think the whole line just has some duds like this, but overall not impressed enough to buy more.

Alisha Avatar

I usually get most of the Too Faced palettes but I have been skipping out with the last few like the country, rock, cat eye, then saw your two recent reviews. Boo to quality on this one I’m disappointed. Just like any brand, I’m not going to collect just to collect especially when I keep seeing all these makeup geek, makeup forever, and colourpop shadows with no problems. Why settle as a consumer right? I do like the tones it provides though in the look you created, super pretty. Hopefully it will still look like that if I try to recreate it on my nw20 skin…lol. Sometimes products aren’t always as flattering on me.

I’m glad I decided I didn’t need this. Although, I’d love to see Strapless as a single. I’m loving that shade. I have the Tarte dupe, at least.

charlotte Avatar

I think this one is a “better in use than swatched” palette. Mine is still in shipping but I’ve used five of them in the Natural Eye palette.. and everyone I know who has this one adores it.

Kirsten Avatar

I was kind of waffling on this palette and I was hoping you’d review it. I think I will go for Tartelette or Naturally Pretty instead. Thank you!

Ellen Avatar

On my fair skintone, I find thei palette very useful. I especially like Strapless and Chocolate Cookie. I couldn’t really find good dupes for either. The ones you recommended ar either too light or too dark. I think with primer these would be much less powdery, for those who complain of that quality. I personally, have not had good luck with primers becaue they limith my ability to blend once shadows have been placed. So colors in the medium range work great for me! The dupes for strapless were all LE, do you know of any that are permanent?

LisaLoves Avatar

Hi Ellen,

I hope you dont mind, however I had the same problems with primers, until I used a flesh tone shade as a base on top of the primer – it makes blending seamless!

Rachel Avatar

I really love this one too. I use a primer regardless, and I honestly don’t find it kicks up any more dust in the pan than UD Naked2. For me they blend very well. I use powder to line so I normally have to do a little under eye cleanup regardless.

Toni Avatar

Love the look of strapless but I think I’ll pass on this one. I have the Chocolate bar palette and will purchase the second one if I fancy more neutral mattes. I agree that there are some shades that lack depth and poor payoff especially when you consider what they charge for these palettes.

M Avatar

I was waiting for you to review this one! Thank you
I already got it but haven’t had a chance to play around with it. Now thinking of returning it. I trust your reviews.

I have a warm skin tone. Like nc20. Green eyes. Do you think the Laura mercier palette would be good for me? I worry the purples might bring out my under eye circles? Even best concealers can’t cover them perfectly

Ellen Avatar

OK, I can keep looking on my own. The comment beneath mine that suggests looking to blushes for eyeshadow dupes is great. I have been doing the reverse for years. Its sometimes hard to find good warm toned blushes, so I use eyeshadows in the colors I’m looking for. That may be the way to go to find a good dupe for strapless. I already tried a very old pan of Bobbi Btown’s brown berry blush (very old, but great), and it swatched pretty similar on my hand. Eyes are different though, the skin is thinner, and I think the pink tones come out brighter. But great idea for a color that bridges two useages!

janechemi Avatar

Do I need another matte neutral palette? Like I need a hole in my head. Am I going to buy this anyway? Yes. thanks for the swatches

Megan Avatar

I lusted after this at Ulta for about a month before I bought it. It swatched great, looked awesome. Received it, and was pretty sad when some of the colors didn’t blend at. all. Especially the darkest colors. However, after some play, I’ve found that all of the light/medium colors are really nice, and the dark colors are amazing to use as liner and darkening the lash line. However, I really can’t get them to blend at all, which is disappointing.

Vanessa Avatar

I’m looking to get another neutral matte palette. At this point, I have the Sonia Kashuk Eye on Neutral Matte palette. I’m already hitting pan on a few shades and was wondering if you would suggest this as a good all-matte palette. If not, what other ones would you suggest? (I know that the Viseart Neutral Matte palette received rave reviews from you, but it looks nearly identical to my Sonia Kashuk one…if you already owned it, would you consider purchasing the too faced matte palette? Or are they too similar as well?)

Tianna Avatar

I have to say, I agree with this review. I bought the TF Natural Matte palette loving the look of the colours, but after playing around with it for a while, I do regret it unfortunately. The colours are so soft that they’re difficult to control when blending, and I often end up with a muddy look if I apply too much, or patchiness if I apply too little. There’s no happy medium with this, unless I put in a lot more effort than I actually want to.
I much prefer my custom palette with MAC and MUG shadows, period.
