Violet Satine

Tom Ford Beauty Violet Satine Eye Color Crème Eyeshadow Quad ($89.00 for 0.31 oz.) is a new, cooler-toned color story that featured lavender and mauve across two shimmer and two satin shades. The formula is a cream-powder hybrid, though they have a more powder-like feel between the two and performed a lot like a traditional powder eyeshadow with respect to application. The magic was that they “melted” for a better look and feel on the lids due to the extra glide/slip.

Formula Overview

-

The new Creme finish is supposed use "lush emollients" for a "crease and flake-resistant finish" that is "long-wearing" and "one-swipe" in application. It feels like a cream-to-powder formula but with a ratio of more like 35% cream to 65% powder, as there was a more emollient feel by touch but a stiffer brush could produce a little kick up when swirled in the pan.

The magic was when the formula was applied to bare skin, though, as it "melted" in a way that made the finish appear more seamless and skin-like, smooth without emphasizing skin texture or lines. They applied just fine using typical eyeshadow brushes and application methods that I would have used for a traditional powder eyeshadow.

The pigmentation ranged from semi-opaque to opaque, depending on the shade, but most were buildable if they weren't fully opaque in "one swipe." I found the eyeshadow formula very easy to apply and blend out, too. They lasted between eight and nine hours on me before fading a bit.

This is the only Tom Ford “holiday” quad I picked up and it is so so beautiful. Managed to get it 20% off at the start of the Sephora sale so that was definitely a bonus 🙂
Really enjoy this formula and color story, performed amazing (as it should for $90!)
The mattes practically blend themselves and the shimmers have that little extra something special to them that give the elevated sparkle/shine.

i’m very curious to know (and maybe you do know, Christine), is this price reflective of the actual cost of making eyeshadows? Or are we paying for the name and perceived prestige of owning something from Tom Ford?
Once converted to CDN funds this is WAY out of my budget. Most palettes on Sephora are now priced out of budget for me as well. Makeup has gone up in price so much! And I have found some great alternative brands that I think the eyeshadows are fantastic for a fraction of the price and I’m left wondering how different the quality REALLY is between those brands and say Pat McGrath or Tom Ford?

Hi Susan,
I bought two of the .Essence palettes – the travel ones, Welcome to london and the Rome one. They actually are good! And the little 6 pan shadows from Essence as well, in the coloured packaging (orange, blue, coral, etc). For the price, they’re just as good as the Too Faced and Bourjois older palettes I have.
For the amount I use eyeshadow anymore, these are the best Shoppers Drug Mart options. Covergirl, Rimmel, Maybelline just don’t have the quality.
I also really like Colourpop now that they ship to us.
I still have an extensive MAC collection but i only purchase refill eyeshadows IF i need them. They’ve gone up so much in price and honestly I use bronzer and blush a lot for eyeshadow!
