Tom Ford for Lipstick — Test #1

Tom Ford Pink Dusk Lip Color ($45.00 for 0.10 oz.) is a subtle, toned-down pink with a little fleshy nude to it. I wouldn’t describe it so much as a nude as I would a pale pink. I’d say it’s a rather neutral pink, too — in some light, it looks almost cool-toned, but if you turn your head, it turns warmer. It is a well-pigmented lipstick that looks opaque on lips without very little layering required.

Tom Ford’s Private Blend Lip Color collection are all vanilla scented and come in a white and gold square tube. It’s a very clean and elegant look, and the tube itself is weighty, so it feels more luxurious when you hold it in your hand. I like that the usage of the white paneling means no fingerprints, since that is a common problem when brands use more metallic/metal kind of packaging. The top and bottom are both “gold,” with the top having “Tom Ford” imprinted on it. It does click shut and stay closed well.

The formula itself is creamy and lightweight–it doesn’t feel slippery or nearly as creamy as YSL Rouge Voluptes, nor does it glide on as smoothly and effortlessly as Guerlain Rouge Gs. Tom Ford’s color range is full with twelve different shades ranging from nudes to deep plums. The textures of Tom Ford’s lipsticks are semi-matte–they’re not shimmery at all–and so they have a smidgen of sheen/glisten but overall, a much flatter finish.

Where Tom Ford excels is in the wear of his lipstick. These last for hours and hours, and depending on what you’re eating/drinking, may last through those as well. Without eating/drinking, I can easily get four to five hours of wear. I made it through a meal with the majority of the color intact, though the color looked nearly matte after the meal. It doesn’t cling and feel drying from the get-go nor when you go to remove it at the end of the day. These wear very well, and the darker shades do stain, which will give them even more wear. For a light shade such as Pink Dusk to last for five hours, it’s definitely a feat.

I love the rich, opaque color Tom Ford’s lipstick delivers, and I like that they’re comfortable to wear without being drying. Pink Dusk seems like a nice, universal shade that’s neither bold nor barely there that can be worn by all skin tones.

I will say that $45 is rather steep, and even for a designer brand like Tom Ford, it’s not where I would have pegged the price to come in at. I wish that, despite the high price tag, they would beef up the quantity — maybe 0.12 or 0.14 oz. — rather than a mere 0.10 oz. One tube should last you awhile, since you don’t need much for a single application and reapplication should be less frequent than your average lipstick, but the slightly below average quantity for a slightly above average price tag is worth noting.

love the packaging… it’s a nice and common pink, i guess. looks good on you though! (damn, from bright to nude everything looks fantastic on you lol)

Cynthia Avatar

I’d love to see a review from you on Vanilla Suede! Do you have that one? I am so tempted to buy it, but it’s so much money for a blind-buy.

baby in a corner Avatar

I’m so tragic, I’ve been straining my eyes, almost leaving myself blind trying to read the bottoms of the lipsticks in the picture to find out which other ones you have to review! I’m very excited, imagine if I had one of these babies in my hand!

LiLi Avatar

But would you say the colors are the same? I don’t mind a dif texture, but I just don’t want a color dupe…

Thanks, Christine!

It’s a gorgeous lipstick, but the one I reach for least out of the TF lipsticks I own (I do prefer a brighter lip.) I have to say, if any of mine had wonky labels on the bottom it would drive me insane – for $45 I expect the colour label to be perfectly aligned!

These do last very well on the lips.

Leea Avatar

Ooh that looks like a lovely pink! I think this might be a lipstick I would like to acquire.
But the price…. Not for me. Do you know if there’s a Mac dupe?

LuvJ Avatar

So Christine, in your experience, did you prefer the Guerlain G’s over this? They are in the same price range.. so which is a better splurge?

Jamie Avatar

That color reminds me of my beloved Pink Please lipstick buy Maybeline!
It might remind me of it to much though, I wouldn’t spend $45, for a lipstick I could get in the same shade for $6 D:

Kelli Avatar

I wish I didn’t love these some much? Do you have any other shades of these you’re going to be reviewing? I’d love to Vanilla Suede or Black Orchid 🙂 the lightest/darkest colors

raquel Avatar

YES!!!! I prayed to all the stars in the sky for you to review the TF lip sticks, and now you have!!! *happy dance* 🙂 I could tell by your last picture that you got pink dusk (duh), true coral and ?. I couldn’t make out the last shade (blush nude, perhaps?). I own true coral and I think I love it (I have to love it). Like you said, the price is pretty steep for how much you get, so I am trying to convince myself that these are keepers. Now I’ll probably not sleep, at all, until your other 2 reviews come up for these babies! 🙂 Thanks for the very thorough review, as always!

Yujin Avatar

oh my gosh….this color is absolutely stunning on you. I rarely comment, but I think this should be your everyday natural (but with a kick) lipstick!!!
shame its limited edition and expensive 🙂

Lea Avatar

I am so obsessed with Tom Ford and these lipsticks will definitely go on my “splurge” list. For the times I think I deserve something nice. 😉

Shal Avatar

I NEED this color, it looks so great on you! $45 is a little steep for me though. Can you think of any similar (and more affordable if possible).

baby in a corner Avatar

Yeah! a review of these! I saw them in the department store and had a swatch and i love the range of colours. the lady must’ve known I wasn’t going to purchase cause i looked a mess – running around town all day – but she was still nice and let me look through them! the packaging is dee-vine! only thing, you think they’d have stuck the stickers on straight on your ones that are photographed above!

this wouldn’t be my fav colour, i’d probably go for the fuschia but still pretty!

Hend Avatar

ah this shade is just amazing
I got my TF lipsticks in Vanilla Suede and Pure pink
and its formula is very beautiful
but I really hate the packaging ,
I dunno it looks dated and not as chic
as his perfumes and his other products 🙁

Haley Avatar

Wow, I find this lipstick colour gorgeous. Do you find this a bit pinker to MAC Hue lipstick, Christine, or is it not in the same family as that at all?

applepark Avatar

I splurge on Tom Ford Private Blends fragrances but I am not sure if I am loving these lipsticks for $45. I swatched them at Jefferies and found them super pigmented and nice… but not any nicer than let’s say Edward Bess or Rouge de G (both of which I adore and like a wayyyyyy lot more).

applepark Avatar

ps Christine can you please review Edward Bess stuff. Edward Bess was similar and started as lipsticks only. But I adore his stuff. The scent alone is to die for. Very good quality products and pigmentation. I would love to know your opinion on them.

Sara Avatar

I just saw this review of TF. I have Pink Dusk, bought it in Harrods. Agree with Christine’s comments about long lasting wear. The colour is actually something I never thought I’d wear. I’m not lipstick person, I like glosses. But this one looks amazing day or night. Because of this one lipstick I’m willing to try more colours. 🙂

To the poster who was wondering about availability in Canada. Holt Renfrew carries the lippies.
I think they’re the only ones I’m afraid.

nat Avatar

Thanks for reviewing this! Can’t wait to see which other colors you got! I’ve been eyeing “True Coral” recently, but I’ll have to test it out once more to figure out if I really want to dish out $45!

Jenny04105 Avatar

This is a beautiful color, and I have definitely been hearing about how lovely the TF lipsticks are. But I really do not think I could spend $45 on a lipstick .. That is just too insane for me.

Margot Avatar

Oh Christine, this colour is THE perfect pink … i have been looking for such a pink for so long. Now I need to find a shop that sells Tom Ford in my area !!

Girlygirl70 Avatar

Hi Christine,

I’m actually really surprised that you didnt LOVE this formula, I dont have any of the ‘comparable’ ones but I love my Tom Ford I have the Pure Pink one and it is gorgeous color, great staying power and luxuriously creamy! i love mine, it is a bit to spend but if you like to treat yourself i’d definitely recommend! 🙂

Hannahbelle Avatar

Sooo tempted to buy but I’m on a month long makeup ban haha. Do you have a tutorial up for this eye look though? I love it 🙂

kim Avatar

Are these limited edition? I heard he’s coming out with a beauty line but it hasn’t been confirmed whether or not it will include the private blend lip colors. I really hope not because I really want Pink Dusk!

Andrea Avatar

Yay! Can’t wait till you review True Coral 🙂
I love these lipsticks, yes they are a decadent indulgence but I love them never the less.

Hilana Avatar

I really, really love this colour. Thanks Jamie for telling me about Pink Please from Maybelline, since we actually do get that brand here in SA and I would love to have a colour similar to this one. Very nice. The kind of nude/pinky shade that would actually suit my skin colouring.

nikki c Avatar

are the lipsticks limited edition or will they remain part of his permanent line?
i would love to try one but $45 is a bit much for me now
maybe in the future?:]

ak Avatar

This lipstick has a great amount of opacity on you Christine, it really covers up your birthmark on your lip. Which is great so there’s more pigment for all the money you’re spending on it!

What other colors dis you get that you can do reviews on?

Siti Avatar

Love this lipstick, and love the formulation, i have the one in Moroccan Rouge, and was thinking of getting this one.
Question, do you think Illamasqua lipstick in Test could be a dupe for it?

x

trang axtman Avatar

amaryllis30 Avatar
