“…lip shaper…”

*puppy head tilt*

Do we not call it a lipliner anymore? Is that not happening? These look really pretty (and remind me of a high end version of NYX’s newish Ombre Lip Duos), but c’mon… call a spade a spade.

(Plus “lip shaper” makes me think of plastic surgery, not makeup.)

LOL Yeah, sometimes we just need to move past the silly nomenclature and focus on the product–a lipliner on one end and a lipstick on the other. At the end of the day, it is the quality of the product that counts and not its name. With the constant clamor for something new, I think marketers try to come up with a name that leads the consumer to think that the product is something new and different. All that aside, I have read some very good things about these duos and am looking forward to trying them when I visit the Tom Ford counter next week.

You know I just can’t get past the high price. We are definitely paying JUST for the name but a lip contour pencil..eh you can name anything fancy but it’s still just a lip pencil and lipstick duo.

I’d like to know whether these will go rancid within a few days or months, like most regular Tom Ford lipsticks. It would be great if they’re a different formula (since the regular formula is plainly defective).

LaMaitresse Avatar

Yours have gone rancid, wow?! I’ve never had that problem, and the Lipsticks are kind of a star product in the Ford line up. Of all the pricey lipsticks out there, it’s the one I’d recommend as a splurge to people.

I’ve never had a lipstick go rancid from Tom Ford and I have had a few for a couple of years. I’ve seen the comment elsewhere but only once or twice. So either there was a bad batch or its certain color formulations that this happened with. Seems like the browns mostly I think. I wear more pink/plum shades and they all still smell of vanilla.

Ha! I was going to wait until tomorrow, but I opened mine yesterday and they are pretty spectacular. The liner end is fairly thick, which is going to take some getting used to. The packaging overall is like the lip lacquers in terms of size. The pencils are soft and creamy, so they apply really well. The lipsticks are fabulous. They’re super creamy, but wear really well. I had one on all day yesterday and it wore well through most of dinner (I had pizza, so nothing survives that). They feel very hydrating on the lips as well. I’ve worn two of the colors; one of which I thought would be too brown for me, but I really like them. Will test out the other two over the next few days.

I have four colors (I apparently double ordered one) but the pictures above are duplicates between 2 shades – so it’s not totally accurate for colors. I bought Dream Obscene (that’s the one I duped), Show it Off (nice nude pink/brown – not 90’s brown though!), I’ll Teach You (a nice raspberry shade I wore yesterday) and Make Me (plum). We’ll see if Make Me ends up too dark on my fair complexion; but Dream Obscene is probably going to be my favorite color overall. They’re pricey, but worth checking out. I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how much I’m loving the new lip releases lately and I like that we’re moving away from the urber matte lip.

Thanks for the capsule review. 🙂 I have heard that the wider “shaper” lets you do ombre effects easier and that it can actually be used alone as a matte lip color. As you said, it will take a bit of getting used to, but I guess the thickness contributes to the versatility. I’m looking forward to checking these out next week.

Lea Avatar

It’s actually the packaging that is thick more than the liner, but I didn’t truly compare side-by-side. I’ll check I out and report back. It just feels slightly odd in the hand compared to a typical lip liner. They’re definitely pigmented and creamy enough to wear solo. If you try them, wear it for awhile. The first color I chose was brighter than I expected, but the longer I wore it the more it melded to my lips. It’s hard to explain, but it just wears beautifully.

I wasn’t going to get these, but now you have me curious, and if there’s a more unique color (ie Velvet Orchid), I might be toast!

LaMaitresse Avatar

Well, in Ford dollars for both items it’s actually pretty good value. I like the look of the beige and the peach, and I feel my wallet getting lighter. I haven’t really spent much for fall so it’s a small indulgence.

My obsession with TFB cooled this summer, with his summer palettes. I was underwhelmed by them!! (the pink glow palette was too much to live up to. That being said, I may have to try one of these, dang it, because the design and function are innovative IMO. I see that TFB is coming out with 2 larger palettes for holiday, so it will definitely be difficult to resist one of those!! My current obsession is the BB “City collection” anniversary palette in “Paris” . It is so elegant, you must check that one out!

I’ve got way too many lip pencils and red lipsticks for this to be worth the money, but I do wish more brands did this because it is certainly more convenient to carry around for touch ups.
