The Spring Season: Cle de Peau #2 Lip Gloss

Cle de Peau #2 Lip Gloss ($47.00) has been a favorite of mine since I first swatched it on the back of my hands at Barneys (in Vegas).  I still can’t believe I plunked down the bucks for this one without even trying it on!  I don’t regret it, though, because it’s such a stunning golden-peach flecked gloss.  I don’t know if I’d go so far as to say it’s worth every penny by any means, but I’m happy with the purchase, even over a year out.  It’s mostly non-sticky, but it doesn’t have the jelly feel that a lot of non-sticky glosses have.  It’s a fairly thick gloss that has decent pigmentation (particular for this kind of shade) and really stands out amongst all the Cle de Peau Lip Glosses (IMO!).  I remember swatching several shades and none of them grabbed me like this one.  It has an almost duochrome nature to it; it’s peachy, gold, green, apricot…  Love it. It comes with a wand applicator, has little to no scent (I didn’t notice anything myself).

The only shade I’ve found that’s truly comparable to it has been Le Metier de Beaute’s Payapa Creme ($36).  Sheerer and not nearly as reflective dupes might include shades like MAC Nymphette Lipglass ($14) or NARS Orgasm Lipgloss ($22).  It’s a pricey gloss, so it’s not going to be something just anyone will buy or will want to buy, and that’s fine.  If you like indulgent buys or the ultra luxe, this is definitely one of my favorites.

Is this the right spring gloss for you? Would you wear it?

The Spring Season is a series of posts featuring my favorite soft beige, coral, and pink lipsticks and lipglosses — all perfect for the first blossom of spring — that runs through March 2010.

See photos and swatches…

I totally dig this! I really wish I would have lighter lips, so I could wear such tones, without making myself look ridiculous. Do you think MAC lip erase would do any good for people with pigmented lips, who want to wear such colors?

Alexis Avatar

oh and very pretty btw…I would wear this if it suited my skintone.

I did throw down $29 without any hesitation for an Edward Bess single shadow so I guess that means there’s no turning back for me when faced with an overly priced makeup item…hahahaha

Woo hoo! I was waiting for this one to come up for The Spring Season! I don’t know that I will ever be able to bring myself to spring for it (though I did buy Guerlain’s Gems, something about a lipstick is a little more justifiable to me than a gloss, and the fancy case) but I love love LOVE seeing you post this in looks, etc. I could see myself getting the Le Metier gloss (SOMEday!) though…it’s actually a little richer and I like the color a bit better.

You should use this one in your looks more often 🙂

It’s funny, because I am kind of plowing through my Gems lipstick…I know I’ll never buy another one, but I sort of feel like I have to wear it all the time to “prove” it was worth it (after all it had to be the best color ever to be worth that much, right? haha). I kind of want to save it a little more though; my boyfriend was so horrified by the purchase that I feel like I am trying to prove its worth to HIM 😛 Admittedly I have never finished a lip product yet, at least, not in the 14 months I’ve been buying high-end, but…this will probably be the first!

It looks good on you Christine like a slightly peachy-gold but at that price an with that pacakging? That packaging looks like the Mattese makeup packaging in Ricky’s in NYC.

That is such a gorgeous gloss! I would really have a hard time spending that kind of money on a single gloss, but just out of curiosity, do you know how much gloss that tube holds? I looked on the site, and I didn’t notice the volume listed anywhere.

Hey Christine! This is a beautiful color!! Have you tried Benefits Lip Gloss in Im With The Band? I had to admit that I got it first for the name but the color is really similar to this one and the formula is not sticky either. It could be a nice less expensive dupe.

Oh this is so, so gorgeous! I remember really loving how Le Metier de Beaute’s Papaya Creme looked when you first featured it (that and Framboise Creme, OMG). I still haven’t fallen in love with glosses yet (definitely a lipstick girl here), but I am oh-so-tempted to try this one out! It looks positively gorgeous on you.

after your post last week about chanel glossimers, i went to neiman marcus today (had a crappy day so needed some RT) and bought one from the fall 09 collection called arlequin. i’m in love! thanks for reminding me how much i love them. i also love dior kiss too… but chanel takes the cake for me.

Christine, I love your emails, but I don’t know if I can keep getting them because I see the pic and fall in love, but not a lot of women want to even if they are financially stable will drop a Ulysses Grant for a lipstick. No disrespect whatsoever. I am getting ready to review and $85 powder that illuminates, but it is a very rare occasion. So many of the lipsticks I fall in love with in your emails are more than $40 and I would love to get them, but I can’t do it. Even on Ebay they are just as much. I do appreciate everything you do for us…I just don’t know if I can continue to relate. I love high end, but top of the skyrise is out of my reach unfortunately. I saw your lips in this picture and wanted it so badly. Oh, the pricetag almost made me weep. Thanks again Christine.

But there’s one good thing about it – at the end of the season, I do a picture round-up, and maybe you will find something that’s just what you want and at your price point 🙂

I think sometimes we see a shade we love, and then it inspires us to hunt for something similar in our own stash or to create it by mixing products or even just finding a cheaper dupe in another brand at a later point down the road!

If you like this, I really would check out Le Metier de Beaute Papaya Creme ($36), NARS Orgasm ($22), or MAC Nymphette ($14). Maybe one of those will be as lovely for you as this is 🙂

I love your spring season series. I think this series makes me broke.
But i just want you suggest a possible candidate for that series: Mac’s Sea Sheer Lipstick. Its a creamy, lovely coral. I love it.

I just tryed this on at Barneys today and I REALLY love it! and thats saying a lot because i don’t own a single gloss!!! is the le metier papya creme more of a copperish color? by the way i love your site 🙂

Haute Spam!! Temptalia you’ve done it again! I broke down and bought this color and I love it! In general, I tend to lean towards peachy pinks with golden undertones, so this one fits right in with my collection of glosses (ala MAC Nymphette, NP SET Mauritius, and I’m getting Le Metier de Beaute Lip Creme Lip Gloss in Papaye next!!). However, because of the price I will only be using this gloss on special occassions and will try to depot it once I can’t get anymore out so I get every last drop of my money’s worth, sheesh this stuff is expensive, but I’m happy with it, there is no color that I own that has this much pigmentation and I like the duochrome effect. Unfortunately your paying for the name, because I really believe this same formula could be duped for a cheaper price by another brand.

Just curious, how does this compare to Benefit’s I’m With The Band or Buxom Amber (if you know)?

BTW– it’s very sheer but one of the best steals I’ve found for lipgloss was a buy one get 2 free on Zoya’s lipglosses which are big (.42 oz) and very inexpensive. Two of the shades were just okay but Meow is beautiful. Similar shade to the #2 but very sheer and full of very tiny flecks of all colors. Meow is awesome for simple daytime look and it seems to be pretty moisturizing.
