The Scarlet Season: Chanel Passion Rouge Allure Lipstick

Chanel Passion Rouge Allure Lipstick ($30.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a richly pigmented, medium bright red that leans only slightly blue, but otherwise reads fairly neutral on my lips. It applies easily and evenly (though it should be worn with a lip liner to keep it inside the lines so-to-speak) and has a glossy sheen. I like how hydrating the Rouge Allure formula is, and I can appreciate the high level of pigmentation that accompanies it, too. It doesn’t compete against Chanel’s Dragon for me, but it’s a very nice, more color and no shimmer kind of red lip color that’s nice on other occasions.

What about you? Would you wear this red?

The Scarlet Season is a series of posts showcasing and featuring my favorite shades of red lips–from glosses to lipsticks that runs through December 2009. You can sure expect to see a lot of red this holiday season!

THIS is hot! I have a Chanel in Marylin, which is more pinkish, and I do not dare to wear it. I do not dare to wear red at all… Time to get started, after I read the NARS Velvet Matete pencil Review…

i wish i could find a red lipstick that didnt look so ghastly! it really seems as if red lipstick looks better on people with lighter skin (i’m around NW40/43).

le sigh….do you have any recommendations, Christine?

I totally agree. I share your colouring and red does not have the same crisp look as it looks on lighter skin tones. Our complexion is always suggested to wear more burgundy reds but to me those are not red…They are berry and burgundy shades.

The only shades of red that comes close to adequate on me are very bright fluoro reds, they lean more to the coveted crisp red look for darker skin. They are hard to find, any suggestions Christine?

I think I’m around your skin complexion and i’m sure i know what you’re talking about. True red lipstick looks horrid on me as well.

What you can try to do is wear a red that’s not so much true but a tiny bit on the burgundy side. It doesn’t have to be totally burgundy but something like UD’s Gravity which is still in the red family but has a rubyesque characteristic to it.

Another trick I use is don’t apply it straight out of the tube. Applying it with a lip brush kind of subsides the colour a bit making it look better against our skin complexion.

Sometimes I blot as well after applying it to kill the colour down a bit and apply a clear gloss on top.

Hope I was at least some help! xo.

I have to say, I’m totally loving this series! I think it’s my favorite one on the site (so far). I’m definitely getting a red before the end of this holiday season~

Are you planning on reviewing the LipSense lipglosses? I think PurseBuzz and Koren both did a review… but neither did one with the red lipglosses! I’d love to see if you think the LipSense glosses stack up against Chanel’s Dragon.

Gosh this one is so pretty and glossy!

Gotta say, I love this feature, Christine. I want to find a backup deeper red (my favorite is long since discontinued) and your posts are really helping. Though, it kind of makes me want to take notes – it’s hard to remember going from post to post how each compares to the next. I need a chart or something – this one is blue, this one is orange, this one is sheer, this one has shimmer. 🙂

This looks amazing on you! I bought this recently and I LOVE IT!! It’s so moisturizing and the red is so gorgeous. I literally sat at Chanel counter for a very long time and Passion was my first and last choice out of all the other red shades. It was either this or Dragon and this looked better on me. But, I might have to get Dragon too! I am in love with this line of lipsticks, I might want other shades, this is so bad for my wallet!
