The Tempting 10 -- October 2013 Edition

Illamasqua Apocalips Lipstick Sleek Sunset Eyeshadow Palette Inglot #434 Marc Jacobs Th(ink) Giorgio Armani #701 Giorgio Armani #701 NARS Taj Mahal Cult Nails You're My Dandy Lion Fyrinnae Parental Advisory OCC Jubilee Illamasqua Stranger

October is a time that reminds me to be brave; to not be afraid of bold, unusual colors. Halloween is an often excuse to play with color in ways we’ve never felt comfortable doing so the rest of the year, but it also serves as a great reminder to: experiment more. play more. go outside of our comfort zone. embrace the unknown. thirst for something different. These are a few of my favorite more unique and unusual shades that I’ve come across, and I hope you’ll share your own unusual finds with me!

  1. Illamasqua Apocalips is a vivid, medium-dark blue-teal with a matte finish. I love the unusual color, but what I love even more is that it still applies and wears fairly well. It’s definitely a show-stopping color!
  2. Sleek Sunset Palette is a budget-friendly palette that’s top-to-bottom fantastic. No duds in the bunch; not only is this a feat for an eyeshadow palette in general, but to do so at under $15? It’s quite unusual!
  3. Inglot #434 is a cool-toned, purplish taupe–a glorious mix of purple, gray, and brown for something infinitely complex, bold but neutral.
  4. Marc Jacobs Beauty Th(ink) is a bold, cool-toned violet purple with a pearly shimmer that really opens up the eye–and it is a shade that had many, many readers asking, “What are you wearing?” Purple eyeliners that can be applied with opaque, rich color are hard to come by, but Th(ink) makes a strong case for one that does.
  5. Giorgio Armani #701 is a cool-toned, sheer bluish-purple gloss filled with blue and violet shimmer. It’s very intriguing on its own, but it can be layered over lipstick for a different look.
  6. NARS Taj Mahal is bold, bright, but not totally over-the-top, and it’s more of a tangerine than a full-on orange with red tones, so it has more golden, yellowy undertones.
  7. Cult Nails You’re My Dandy Lion is a warm, buttery yellow with a cream finish–and lo and behold, it applies beautifully. It’s practically a unicorn among polish!
  8. Fyrinnae Parental Advisory is a bold, bright, royal purple like I haven’t seen before. It’s so vibrant and pigmented–if you are a fiend for purple eyeshadow, it is a must-have.
  9. OCC Jubilee is a pale, aqua-green with a blue-purple duochrome. It’s metallic, shimmering, and reflective. I love the way the color shifts as you move, as it is layered over other products, and will lean one way or another depending on what is paired with.
  10. Illamasqua Stranger is a green-ish gold gloss with a high-shine finish, lots of metallic shimmer, and it is a shade that changes as you move.

I hope you’ll consider sharing your must-haves for October in the comments! Here’s a quickie list to get you started…

Taj Mahal is my HG blush. Makes me look like I have a healthy tan even if it’s the middle of the winter : ) I used it every day for over a year and BARELY made a tiny dent in the pan!

Olivia Avatar

Neutral, warm eyes usually. I like it with olive greens, browns, golds, smokey eyes, things like that.

I always play it safe(and lame) with the lips because mine are rather large and I look insane in bright lip colors haha. So I’ll do a simple clear gloss, balm, or MLBB shade.

After I read your review on Sleek’s Sunset Palette I immediately went on their website to look at what else they had to offer. I ended up buying the Oh So Special Palette from Amazon.
$15 (including shipping), ordered it on 9/25 and it arrived on 10/4 (even though the estimated arrival was 10/23!) and I’m already in love.
I guess that’d be my October must have, even though many people might not see the light pinks as very fall-friendly.

Totally prepared to purchase many more of their palettes.

Christine Avatar

So glad you had a good experience through Amazon! I ordered one palette and it arrived much faster than stated, too, since who could say to another one, and since I was referring readers there, I wanted to see what the buying experience was like.

I actually Love the ‘Résistance’ One. I don’t like the scent so much, like Sour Green Apples, but this mask helps to protect my Hair from spliss longer.

Must-Have Eye Products:
a neutral palette that lets you do looks with varying intensities – my choices are naked2 and naked basics (i really want to try lorac pro and thebalm Nude ‘Tude, but can’t really justify buying them when i already own naked2 and basics)

Must-Have Cheek/Face Products:
nars blush in dolce vita

Must-Have Lip Products:
kat von d homegirl (super dark plum-brown), nyx indie flick, mac diva, chili, and rebel

I’m absolutely *loving* NARS Multiples. I have drier skin, which becomes more so in the cooler months, so I don’t bother as much with powder face products.

I’ve also been reminded of Kat von D’s Homegirl lipstick, so I think I’ll pull that out this weekend! I’m not much of a lipstick person, especially deeper shades, in warmer weather (which we have a lot of here in SoCal!), but now that it’s getting cooler, I’m up for switching out the lip balms.

Today was the first real sign of autumn here. Gray, overcast, and cold. Definitely began to notice leaves all around, pumpkin-colored decorations and suddenly thought: ah-hah, Godiva has its pumpkin chocolates in stock now. What a great excuse to get to a shopping mall to check out make-up counters.

Oops, those are my all time must haves! Not just for October! In October, I am loving Wet n Wild Comfort Zone eyeshadow palette, Benefit They’re Real mascara, Tarte bronze cream eyeshadow, and Sonia Kashuk Spiced Berry lipstick.

Sarah Avatar

If you don’t have it, you need it! It is an antique gold with a slight olive tinge…unusual and beautiful. I love it with the #340…that’s sort of autumnal, isn’t it? 🙂
I confess that I used to turn my nose up at Wet ‘n Wild, but Comfort Zone converted me!

Everything in your list is soooo drool worthy …
Here is my list 🙂

eyes 🙂 ysl jade black liner with ud smoked palette …
lips n cheek …. giorgio armani lip maestro in 402 Chinese laquer
plus cant get over mac lipmix …. endless options

hair n face …. lush Cynthia Sylvia shampoo …. a hung curd mask every week before shampooing
Kiehls bb cream in natural which is great but smell is annoying

Sarah Avatar

I love that name Apocalips! And if I don’t already own Inglot #434, then I see a trip to Macy’s in my near future. A “mix of purple, gray, and brown” is right up my alley. Is it a dupe for Lancome Click?

I don’t do anything different with my makeup in October, unless it’s costume related. So, like the time I did one eye in pure white and one in pure black eyeshadow, when I was being a cat. Or last year, when I did a peacock look and got to go all out in jewel tones.

So…my 2013 must-haves are going to revolve around my goddess costume which is white with gold accents. I am going to go nuts with the gold, I bought a Nyx Jumbo Pencil for body art, which I plan to set with bronzer, I am going to use one of my many gold lip colors (though I’m leaning towards Fyrinnae’s Isis), I have gold hair color spray.

And I finally broke down and bought a pure black nail polish. I have tons of nail polish, can’t resist new, complex colors, and I haven’t managed to get a straight-up black cream until this week.

Christine do you know what’s going on with the Fyrinnae website? It’s really frustrating when I want to order their website is not working or just get a blank page. Yesterday when I was ready to checkout it emptied out my cart and the website wouldn’t work anymore! 🙁 help please!
