The Tempting 10 -- October 2013 Edition
October is a time that reminds me to be brave; to not be afraid of bold, unusual colors. Halloween is an often excuse to play with color in ways we’ve never felt comfortable doing so the rest of the year, but it also serves as a great reminder to: experiment more. play more. go outside of our comfort zone. embrace the unknown. thirst for something different. These are a few of my favorite more unique and unusual shades that I’ve come across, and I hope you’ll share your own unusual finds with me!
- Illamasqua Apocalips is a vivid, medium-dark blue-teal with a matte finish. I love the unusual color, but what I love even more is that it still applies and wears fairly well. It’s definitely a show-stopping color!
- Sleek Sunset Palette is a budget-friendly palette that’s top-to-bottom fantastic. No duds in the bunch; not only is this a feat for an eyeshadow palette in general, but to do so at under $15? It’s quite unusual!
- Inglot #434 is a cool-toned, purplish taupe–a glorious mix of purple, gray, and brown for something infinitely complex, bold but neutral.
- Marc Jacobs Beauty Th(ink) is a bold, cool-toned violet purple with a pearly shimmer that really opens up the eye–and it is a shade that had many, many readers asking, “What are you wearing?” Purple eyeliners that can be applied with opaque, rich color are hard to come by, but Th(ink) makes a strong case for one that does.
- Giorgio Armani #701 is a cool-toned, sheer bluish-purple gloss filled with blue and violet shimmer. It’s very intriguing on its own, but it can be layered over lipstick for a different look.
- NARS Taj Mahal is bold, bright, but not totally over-the-top, and it’s more of a tangerine than a full-on orange with red tones, so it has more golden, yellowy undertones.
- Cult Nails You’re My Dandy Lion is a warm, buttery yellow with a cream finish–and lo and behold, it applies beautifully. It’s practically a unicorn among polish!
- Fyrinnae Parental Advisory is a bold, bright, royal purple like I haven’t seen before. It’s so vibrant and pigmented–if you are a fiend for purple eyeshadow, it is a must-have.
- OCC Jubilee is a pale, aqua-green with a blue-purple duochrome. It’s metallic, shimmering, and reflective. I love the way the color shifts as you move, as it is layered over other products, and will lean one way or another depending on what is paired with.
- Illamasqua Stranger is a green-ish gold gloss with a high-shine finish, lots of metallic shimmer, and it is a shade that changes as you move.
I hope you’ll consider sharing your must-haves for October in the comments! Here’s a quickie list to get you started…
Must-Have Eye Products:
Must-Have Cheek/Face Products:
Must-Have Lip Products:
Must-Have Hair/Skin Products:
Taj Mahal is my HG blush. Makes me look like I have a healthy tan even if it’s the middle of the winter : ) I used it every day for over a year and BARELY made a tiny dent in the pan!
What do you like to pair it with (like eyes/lips)?
Neutral, warm eyes usually. I like it with olive greens, browns, golds, smokey eyes, things like that.
I always play it safe(and lame) with the lips because mine are rather large and I look insane in bright lip colors haha. So I’ll do a simple clear gloss, balm, or MLBB shade.
Nothing wrong with safe 🙂
1) NYX blush in Pinched
2) Vice 2
3) Ocho Loco 2
4) Bobbi Brown Rich Chocolate Palette
5) Zoya Mason
6) NARS Blush in Sin
7) Urban Decay Lipstick in Naked
8) Urban Decay Lipstick in Venom
9) Laura Mercier Silk Creme Foundation
10) Dior NudeSkin Highlighter
Those are great picks, Julia!! 🙂
Dang, I literally want every single item in this collage, lol 🙂
Aww!
SleekUp doesn’t ship to the U.S.!!! major sadface!!
Some products ship to U.S., but you can snag some of the restricted items via Amazon (third-party sellers) or eBay 🙂
Whew!! thank you for the deets!!
I just purchased some blushes from sleekmakeup.com, it took around 10 days for shipping to US.
Awesome! 🙂
Oh sorry, I just found that there are some products that they won’t ship to US!
Everything is so prettyy in ur temptingg list!!:)
🙂
I was drooling over Inglot 434, until I remembered – I already own it!
So many wonderful eyeshadows, only two eyes! 🙂
Is purple going to be The Eyeshadow Color this fall?
I’m seeing lots of it!
Haha! So glad you have #434 – it’s AMAZING!
I think jewel-tones, purple included, tend to be big for fall and holiday!
Purple was major at NYFW and PFW, so expect a lot of it in spring.
Must-Have Eye Products: MAC paintpots in Rubenesque and Groundwork, Garnet eyeshadow from Lorac PRO palette, UD Mushroom Eyeliner
Must-Have Cheek/Face Products: Lorac POREfection baked perfecting powder as foundation, Hourglass Mood Light (the lavender one) ambient lighting powder.
Must-Have Lip Products:Tarte Dazzled lipsurgence. I got this in a holiday set two Christmases ago, and this is the most perfect shade I’ve ever found for my skintone. So sad it’s LE!!
Nails: I’m loving Zoya’s Ibiza-a true, deep, rich navy. It never looks black, it truly looks like a beautiful navy.
Garnet from LORAC Pro is perfect for fall!
After I read your review on Sleek’s Sunset Palette I immediately went on their website to look at what else they had to offer. I ended up buying the Oh So Special Palette from Amazon.
$15 (including shipping), ordered it on 9/25 and it arrived on 10/4 (even though the estimated arrival was 10/23!) and I’m already in love.
I guess that’d be my October must have, even though many people might not see the light pinks as very fall-friendly.
Totally prepared to purchase many more of their palettes.
So glad you had a good experience through Amazon! I ordered one palette and it arrived much faster than stated, too, since who could say to another one, and since I was referring readers there, I wanted to see what the buying experience was like.
I love your choices!
Must Have Eyes – Sugarpill Stella
Must Have Cheeks – Illamasqua Crush blush
Must Have Lips – Morgana Cryptoria Saloon Spirits

Must-Have Eye Products: Chanel Mascara Base, Chanel Le Volume Mascara, MAC Pearlglide Eyeliner
Must-Have Cheek Products: NARS’ new cheek palettes
Must-Have Face Products: Bare Minerals Matte Foundation
Must-Have Lip Products: Burt’s Bees lip balms
Must-Have Hair Products: Kerastase shampoos and masks
Must-Have Skin Products: Bodylotion! I prefer perfume scented ones.
What’s your favorite Kerastase mask?
I actually Love the ‘Résistance’ One. I don’t like the scent so much, like Sour Green Apples, but this mask helps to protect my Hair from spliss longer.
Loving that Inglot shadow. I’ll have to add it to my “to buy” list (assuming I ever return to Montreal!)
I hope you are able to check it out if you do return to Montreal 🙂
Must-Have Eye Products:
a neutral palette that lets you do looks with varying intensities – my choices are naked2 and naked basics (i really want to try lorac pro and thebalm Nude ‘Tude, but can’t really justify buying them when i already own naked2 and basics)
Must-Have Cheek/Face Products:
nars blush in dolce vita
Must-Have Lip Products:
kat von d homegirl (super dark plum-brown), nyx indie flick, mac diva, chili, and rebel
I have to check out Kat Von D Homegirl! Thank you for the rec!
I’m absolutely *loving* NARS Multiples. I have drier skin, which becomes more so in the cooler months, so I don’t bother as much with powder face products.
I’ve also been reminded of Kat von D’s Homegirl lipstick, so I think I’ll pull that out this weekend! I’m not much of a lipstick person, especially deeper shades, in warmer weather (which we have a lot of here in SoCal!), but now that it’s getting cooler, I’m up for switching out the lip balms.
I wish I loved Multiples as much as everyone else seems to!
What fun, colourful picks! NARS Taj Mahal is one of my faves! xo
It’s such a classic shade!
Today was the first real sign of autumn here. Gray, overcast, and cold. Definitely began to notice leaves all around, pumpkin-colored decorations and suddenly thought: ah-hah, Godiva has its pumpkin chocolates in stock now. What a great excuse to get to a shopping mall to check out make-up counters.
Yum – pumpkin chocolates!!
OCC Liptars in Role Play and Black Metal Dahlia
Bonfire Spirits eyeshadow by Fyrinnae
Styx eyeshadow in Styx
Formula X for Sephora nailpolish in Law of Attraction
How are you liking the new Formula X?
The color and finish is amazing, but I’m a terrible judge for wear. I’m rough on my hands, so I end up chipping almost anything within a day or two.
Must-Have Eye Products: Urban Decay Roach, Inglot #433 (greenish gold) and #340 (matte teal), BareMinerals Well Rested concealer, Lancome Click, Benefit No Pressure and Nina’s Nugget (sadly discontinued)
Must-Have Cheek/Face Products: Lancome Miel Glace, Benefit Dandelion and Georgia (also sadly discontinued)
Must-Have Lip Products: Dior Creme de Rose lip balm
Must-Have Hair/Skin Products: Kerastase Oleo-Relax Serum, Fekkai Glossing Cream, and Pantene BB Cream for Hair
Oops, those are my all time must haves! Not just for October! In October, I am loving Wet n Wild Comfort Zone eyeshadow palette, Benefit They’re Real mascara, Tarte bronze cream eyeshadow, and Sonia Kashuk Spiced Berry lipstick.
Comfort Zone is a great pick for October 😀
I need to go look at #433 by Inglot, I must have it, but I am blanking!
If you don’t have it, you need it! It is an antique gold with a slight olive tinge…unusual and beautiful. I love it with the #340…that’s sort of autumnal, isn’t it? 🙂
I confess that I used to turn my nose up at Wet ‘n Wild, but Comfort Zone converted me!
Happy to hear that Comfort Zone made you a convert 😉
Everything in your list is soooo drool worthy …
Here is my list 🙂
eyes 🙂 ysl jade black liner with ud smoked palette …
lips n cheek …. giorgio armani lip maestro in 402 Chinese laquer
plus cant get over mac lipmix …. endless options
hair n face …. lush Cynthia Sylvia shampoo …. a hung curd mask every week before shampooing
Kiehls bb cream in natural which is great but smell is annoying
I miss Kiehl’s Tinted Moisturizer. I have the BB but it’s the wrong shade… but the texture isn’t the same 🙁
Great list!! I must have that Sleek palette, NARS blush and Illamasqua lipstick. They’re just beautiful!
I hope you get a chance to check them out in person, Fancie!
Fancie…..NARS Taj Mahal is a beautiful blush. I don’t use it as much as their other blushes but since reading Christine’s review; I’m going to pull it out! When I’ve worn it, I usually pair it with Sleek’s Aruba blush.
Just bought the Sunset palette from Amazon for $9.99!!!! That was with the shipping cost and the seller had close to a 5 feedback rating.
Woohoo!!
I love that name Apocalips! And if I don’t already own Inglot #434, then I see a trip to Macy’s in my near future. A “mix of purple, gray, and brown” is right up my alley. Is it a dupe for Lancome Click?
I don’t think I have that shade! 🙁
I don’t do anything different with my makeup in October, unless it’s costume related. So, like the time I did one eye in pure white and one in pure black eyeshadow, when I was being a cat. Or last year, when I did a peacock look and got to go all out in jewel tones.
So…my 2013 must-haves are going to revolve around my goddess costume which is white with gold accents. I am going to go nuts with the gold, I bought a Nyx Jumbo Pencil for body art, which I plan to set with bronzer, I am going to use one of my many gold lip colors (though I’m leaning towards Fyrinnae’s Isis), I have gold hair color spray.
And I finally broke down and bought a pure black nail polish. I have tons of nail polish, can’t resist new, complex colors, and I haven’t managed to get a straight-up black cream until this week.
That sounds like it’s going to be really, really pretty, Quinctia 🙂 Isis would work so well!
eye products: varies but any of those crème style eye shadows from chanel, dior or Armani are must haves; also the casual Friday palette from Pandora’s box for blending.
cheek: elf pink passion or chanel fantastic or tom ford wicked
face: elemis flash balm or estee lauder illuminating perfecting primer; laura mercier secret brightening powder
lip: dior rouge lip liner and lipstick (blot with powder for matte effect)
hair/skin: astara facial scrub, lytera skin brightening system (see dermatologist before starting)
Those are lovely picks, Roselyn!
Must-Have Eye Products: Lorac Palette and Lorac Primer,
Must-Have Cheek/Face Products: Bare Minerals Matte Powder, Nyx blush in Pinched, The Balm’s Bahama Mama bronzer
Must-Have Lip Products: Urban Decay lipstick in Manic, Clinique lipstick in A Different Grape, Maybelline Baby Lips in Cherry Me
Must-Have Hair/Skin Products: Moroccan hair oil, Lush soap in Godmother, Body Shop body butter in Coconut
Thank you for sharing your picks, Jessica! 🙂 I will have to check out that NYX blush!
Christine do you know what’s going on with the Fyrinnae website? It’s really frustrating when I want to order their website is not working or just get a blank page. Yesterday when I was ready to checkout it emptied out my cart and the website wouldn’t work anymore! 🙁 help please!
Honestly, I don’t have any idea. Usually if it’s blank or if it’s emptying your cart, it means they’re updating from what they’ve said on Twitter/their blog.
