How have your foundation preferences changed over the last five years?

When I started out, I liked fuller coverage and a very matte finish, and then I moved toward light-to-medium coverage with a natural finish but lately, I’ve been enjoying medium, buildable coverage with more of a matte finish (as my skin has been less dry).

I’m more willing to use a combination of finishes (I always liked shimmery stuff the most!), though I still find I prefer more semi-matte to satin over mattes myself.

Do you wear more or less makeup as you have gotten older?

Do you wear more or less makeup as you have gotten older?

I wear more products when I wear makeup than I did when I was younger (more steps), but I’m more willing to wear none at all now than I was when I was starting out.

Do you wear makeup to change the way you look or enhance your features?

Do you wear makeup to change the way you look or enhance your features?

The only feature that I definitely enhance would be the overall tone and evenness in my skin, but I feel like when I apply highlighter, it’s less about accentuating bone structure as it is just admiring the way the light reflects!

Thicker brows! I also feel like now there are a lot more styles/preferences for makeup that are readily accepted vs. a single standard of beauty.

Do you have any tricks for weather-proofing your makeup?

Do you have any tricks for weather-proofing your makeup?

If I’m going to be outside for a longer length of time, then I tend to use less base products and then use waterproof or more resistant products on the eyes. For blush, I might opt for a cream or liquid product. I’ll often use a primer under my base products and then a setting spray at the end.

What is your technique for sharpening pencils?

What is your technique for sharpening pencils?

If it’s a really soft formula, putting the pencil in the freezer or refrigerator for a short while helps to firm up the product more so it is not as messy to sharpen. For the most part, I don’t have too many issues sharpening them, though – I use Urban Decay’s Grindhouse quite loyally!

Is there any color that is underrepresented in makeup?

Is there any color that is underrepresented in makeup?

I think cooler undertone products are missing from color cosmetics quite a bit – like cooler browns and taupes but also quality lavenders, grays, and purples. The most obvious gap is in base products with issues in shade/undertone diversity.

How do you deal with fallout from eyeshadows?

How do you deal with fallout from eyeshadows?

I’ll apply eyeshadow first, so then I can wipe away the fallout without worrying about disturbing my base makeup. I might also use it with a damp or firmer brush and press onto the lid to minimize fallout in the first place.

How do you use any products or tools to customize your makeup?

I like using something like MAC Fix+ to improve adhesion or intensity for wet/dry products or more sparkly powder products. I also mix in liquid highlighters into foundations for sheerer coverage and/or luminosity.
