What are your tips for staying on a no- or low-buy?

What are your tips for staying on a no- or low-buy?

I’ve touched on my tips and tricks in longform with a recent post on curating a makeup collection you love, but I also have a guide to going on a low- or no-buy here.  At a high-level, these are three things that I think help to stick to a serious change in purchasing behavior:

1) Set specific goals...

What are three beauty-related things that bring a smile to your face?

Applying eyeshadow, especially color, always makes me happy! I love creating different combos by layering gloss and lipstick together. My third is moment where you’ve finished applying your makeup and it all comes together (well, hopefully).

Do you feel price correlates to quality?

Do you feel price correlates to quality?

At this point, my experience says not so much when it comes to quality of the product itself. The packaging is likely better in some aspect: more complex/interesting/different, sturdier, and/or heavier, but the actual product? Could be total garbage or a new holy grail.

What has your beauty purchasing looked like so far this year?

What has your beauty purchasing looked like so far this year?

A steady stream of purchases (I’m around $6,000 year-to-date) but a feeling that there’s been a bit of slowdown in color releases (particularly eyeshadow) — in a good way — though lip products continue to release relentlessly!

How important is it for packaging to be sturdy enough to travel with?

How important is it for packaging to be sturdy enough to travel with?

For my personal life, not at all. I just need it to hold its shape in a drawer as I very rarely travel (and tend to avoid it at all costs!). ideally, though, I’d want something that could withstand being put into a makeup bag and packed securely (e.g. wrapped with clothes).

What would you like to see next in the world of powder blush?

What would you like to see next in the world of powder blush?

What would you like to see next when it comes to highlighters?

I’d love to see more highlighting blushes, but I’d almost like to see this as a full-on trend/product launch, where there’s real thought into making the underlying blush color work with the highlighting effect. I’m thinking in the vein of products like Dior Hologlam, where it really feels...

What was the last eyeshadow palette that caught your eye?

What was the last eyeshadow palette that caught your eye?

Marc Jacobs Steel(etto) for sure–it’s hard to find cooler-toned palettes, period, and I love me a good taupe eyeshadow (warm or cool). I was so surprised, in a good way, that it wored so well!

How willing are you to make a product "work" for you?

How willing are you to make a product "work" for you?

If it’s really bad–like I have to remove my makeup because it was so bad–then not much. If it’s something like a glittery eyeshadow that doesn’t work as-is but works pretty well with a setting spray or a wet brush, that’s all good with me (as a consumer, not necessarily as a reviewer!)....

What part of your makeup routine do you enjoy the least?

I enjoy the FEELING of a clean, makeup-free face, but there are moments where big sighs are heaved knowing I have to take it all off.
