Sometimes, sometimes, and always. I used to feel uncomfortable returning products that didn’t work for me, but then I realized that a return policy is in place for a reason and a company should know if their product isn’t performing.

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? – Yes, usually I have a list of what I want…although I always try it on in the store if I can before I decide for sure.

Do you ever impulse buy? – Rarely although sometimes I do “fall in love” at first site, for example with Illamasqua Hussy and Dior Addict Icone.

Do you feel comfortable returning products? – I really hate to do it and do feel a bit uncomfortable but I will if I have to or if something REALLY isn’t working for me. Especially if it was pricey. But I really try to do my research to avoid that…sometimes things just don’t work when worn. So far I’ve only really returned lipsticks.

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? If there is a big collection coming out, then I do.
Do you ever impulse buy? Yes, a lot of times based on reviews from others 🙂
Do you feel comfortable returning products?
Yes, if something does not work for me, I will exchange it or give it to a friend who it might work better for.

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? Yes – in that if I’m going to Sephora to buy makeup, I definitely already know what I’m planning to buy, or at least the options I could choose between.

Do you ever impulse buy? Occasionally – when I see a really nice product or a really good deal. (Mostly the latter, because I feel like if I went home and did all the research, by the time I come back, it would be gone.)

Do you feel comfortable returning products? Yes, I am. I buy a fair bit from MAC and Sephora – they have great return policies here, and that’s a part of why they have my business.

1. I always plan ahead so I can avoid number 2.
2. I tend not to.
3. Of course. If something doesn’t work for me, and I haven’t used more than 10% of it, I’ll return it. If any SAs give me attitude, that’s fine. I’ll just stop coming to you for purchases in the future. *Shrugs*

Debra Avatar

Yes; there is a list that I work off of and plan purchases that way (even with clothes).

Yes; I just ordered the Dior trio palette (Smoky Taupe) today, although it will go back if it’s too small or pigment is too sheer, which leads to:

Yes; I feel comfortable returning products. I don’t over-return, partly because I tend to over-think the whole process! Then the impulse buy feels like fun, and it often works out.

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?

When it is make-up, I am tempted to say ‘always’. Especially when it comes to MAC collections, for example. In general, I have a monthly make-up budget that I usually spend on four or five items.

Do you ever impulse buy?

Not really. When it comes to make-up, I always try to hunt down reviews and see what people think. Temptalia is my go-to site, because very few other bloggers provide wear tests. They usually limit themselves to swatches and ‘oooh the pretty colours!’ (which is awesome but not very informative :P).

Do you feel comfortable returning products?

In my head, I know I shouldn’t feel awkward if I have buyer’s remorse (or want to buy something else instead from the same brand), but I find I always try and justify myself when I return a product. And I shouldn’t! After all, I am well within my rights to be a fickle customer 😛

AllyLou Avatar

I’m planing what I want to buy at the mall today. I sometimes impulse buy when I’m killing time before doing something else and I’ve never had to return anything but I’m sure it would have to be unopened/unused to return it here I’m not sure.

Courtney Avatar

I only plan to buy ahead of time when it comes to limited edition items. I rely on your swatches to narrow down collections to maybe five items that I love, if I love any at all. I usually go on the launch date. I’ll swatch the narrowed list on myself and then make my final decisions. Sometimes I walk away with less or more than anticipated. For MAC Me Over I only picked up Smoked Purple and Oh Oh Oh, even though I expected to buy more based on your swatches.

I am a girl obsessed with makeup. Of course I impulse buy.

Yes, I will return a product, though rarely. My last return were the two eyeshadows I picked up from Semi-Precious (Dark Indulgence, Smoked Ruby). I kind of thought they were crap honestly. I wouldn’t have gotten them in the first place but they swatched great in your pictures and on my skin in person. But when I got home and worked with them, I hated them!

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?
Usually I plan what I’m going to buy based on reviews I read online. Occasionally I go to a store with some sort of vague mission in mind, such as “I want a cooler-toned blush” or “I want a black eyeliner” and just check things out until I find one that suits.

Do you ever impulse buy?
Very rarely, and when I do it’s usually more like I’d been thinking about buying something for a while and happen to encounter it so I pick it up, even though I hadn’t planned to. I think my only real impulse buy was MAC Stereo Rose, which turned out too orange for me, sadly!

Do you feel comfortable returning products?
Not if I just don’t care for them, but I’ll return products if I bought the wrong thing by mistake or if I turn out to be sensitive/allergic to the product.

Lee Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? Usually, by reading blogs and forums.
Do you ever impulse buy? Sometimes if something really catches my eye.
Do you feel comfortable returning products? Yep. I don’t very often but if I’m really disappointed in something, I’ll return it.

Katie Avatar

1) Sometimes if I’m shopping for a purpose…like now for back to school.
2) However even with the best of intentions and a list I find myself straying from it all the time, so most of the time what I buy is on impulse lol
3) No I really hate returning stuff…I’ll do it if it was a larger amount of money but anything like 10 bucks and under I usually just keep.

Maria Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? I try but sometimes when you go to the store you may not like what you planned to buy
Do you ever impulse buy? I try and stay away from impulse buys (key words are “I try” )
Do you feel comfortable returning products? YES ! If it does not work the way I thought it would or just does not look right .. its going back to the store

Karen Avatar

Planning ahead of time: I do when it comes to MAC collections, thanks to you and your invaluable site! For example when I went to the MAC counter last Saturday, I purchased only what was on my list based on your swatches and reviews (Lady Grey Quad, Moleskin e/s, Illicit and Social Light lipglass.

Impulse buys: Oh yes, I definitely succumb to impulse purchases.

Comfort in returning: I have become more comfortable with it since MAC and Sephora seem to take returns with no issues. This isn’t related to returns, but I am only comfortable doing Back to MAC when I also make a purchase.

Jessi Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? Almost always – it’s fun.
Do you ever impulse buy? I always wind up getting some things I hadn’t planned on, but only if they work well on me.
Do you feel comfortable returning products? No – especially with LE items, someone else who wanted it just got blocked. If you can’t try it out first and have doubts if it will work, better off not getting it.

Alycia Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?

Usually. But that doesn’t mean I always stick to the plan.

Do you ever impulse buy?

All the time, hahaha! I try to rationalize all of my purchases, but sometimes things just call to me!

Do you feel comfortable returning products?

Yes. I feel like I return products to Sephora all the time – I feel like if I’m paying that amount of money for something, and I get it home and don’t like it, then it is my right to return it if I want to. The tester is not always reliable, and neither is store lighting!

Chris25 Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?: Yes, I usually make a list.

Do you ever impulse buy?: Unfortunately, yes! But if I am in Sephora or MAC I have better self control. The cheaper the product, the more likely I am to to buy it on a whim.

Do you feel comfortable returning products?: No, unless it has a glaring flaw that was the company’s mistake. I would just swap it away or sell it in a blog sale.

_Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?
Yeah! What are beauty blogs for?! Whether it’s a seasonal makeup collection or basic items like nail polish remover, I check reviews and prices online, make a list of what caught my eye and after that I go to the stores. If I like it up close, it’s a deal 🙂

_Do you ever impulse buy?
Very rarely. It takes a very talented sales advisor, or a super mega-discount, to talk me into buying something outside my list.

_Do you feel comfortable returning products?
No. I’m a little embarassed. I ‘ve only returned clothes a couple of times, never beauty products. But if something disappoints me, I’ll tell the sales advisor, always in a kind manner.

Maggie Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? Yes, definitely. I usually write out a list on a notecard or something and bring it with me in my wallet.
Do you ever impulse buy? No, I always research what I want to buy unless I’m at the drugstore. I mainly do many impulse buys there.
Do you feel comfortable returning products? Yes.

Do i plan ahead? Yes I do now, with all the upcoming mac collections and what ive already saved up about 100 pounds for the Mac Msf’s in the Cindy sherman collection and the paint pots, and the 226 brushes.

Do i impulse buy? Yes i am a serious victim of impulse buying, because im the only daughter out of 5 siblings, im used to getting what i see and like straight away, if i was in mac and a lipstick caught my eye, i will buy it straight away, no questions asked. ive since learnt to control my impulse buys by always taking a friend with me or my boyfriend or my brother and telling them to talk me out of buying it.

Do i feel comfortable returning products? Unfortunately due to uk trading law, you cannot return a product if its been opened and/or used. i recently got away with returning Mac’s blush in honour, after swatching it more better at home and realising it wasnt for me. If i had the chance to, i would probably would. If i could return makeup, i think i would be much more happier to try other brands, because trying it on in the store and coming home and putting it on are two different things. Something ive learnt long ago.

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? Yes, I often do this based on research via beauty blogs or new releases by brands that I love. For instance I recently purchased Chanel Ming based on your reviews, Christine and I love it. I am planning on planning on purchasing Phoenix and Dragon as well.
Do you ever impulse buy? Sometimes, if I stumble upon something that I really like most recently it was Nars Oasis.
Do you feel comfortable returning products? No, I rarely return things even though I know I should, I feel like I will be judged. LOL

Do you feel comfortable returning products? Not really… With makeup I can´t do it, makeup cannot be returned in department stores in Mexico.

Meghan Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?
I try to make a pretty concrete plan in mind on what I’m going to buy, because I end up spending a lot less money that way. I do leave a little wiggle room, in case there is something in store that I either didn’t notice online or something that pictures does not do justice to. I limit this to one product though.

Do you ever impulse buy?
All. The. Time. It usually starts out pretty innocently, by walking through Dillards/Macys, intending to pick up something specific, which is nowhere near the cosmetics area, but as I’m already there, I figure it can’t hurt to swing by. Fast forward 15 minutes later, and I’ve somehow spend at least $100, usually on products I won’t end up using often.

Do you feel comfortable returning products?
Of course! If I purchase a product from a non-drugstore brand product, it most likely wasn’t cheap, so I have no problem returning it if the quality wasn’t up to par. I have worked retail before, and I did hate it when a customer would buy a product, use most of it, and then return it with the classic line “I didn’t like it”. To me, this is dishonest.

Rengirl Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?
I keep a “Things to Buy” list on my iPhone that gets updated all the time.

Do you ever impulse buy?
Hardly ever.

Do you feel comfortable returning products?
Yes. Especially high-end; if it isn’t perfect, I don’t hesitate to return it. But I almost never return drugstore products.

Carrie Ann Avatar

Do you ever impulse buy? No. I always research the products I want/hear good things about before buying.

Do you feel comfortable returning products? Yes. If I hate the product, it wouldn’t make sense for me to just keep it and lose the money.

Ani_BEE Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?
Yes and research on the product as well.

Do you ever impulse buy?
I try not to but every once in a while in particular drug store brands some catches my eye I’ve have not heard about.

Do you feel comfortable returning products?
No unless they are defective in some way. I try to swap thing that don work for my skin tone.

Tamara Avatar

1. I do plan ahead before I buy. It helps me to keep to my limit.

2. I try to limit my impulse buys making list and planning ahead, but my weekness is nail polish.

3. I use to feel guilty about returns but now I spend alot more money on makeup so if it doesn’t work for me I have no problem returning and most places let you return makeup no with no problems so that makes it easier.

Emma Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?

Yes, most of the time I think about buying something for a few weeks or months until I finally decide to buy it, just because I want to be very sure of what I buy and that I really want/need it.

Do you ever impulse buy?

Yes, I do. Especially the cheaper makeup. But sometimes when I am depressed or sad or whatever and I decide to go downtown I end up buying something more expensive without having planned that.

Do you feel comfortable returning products?

No, I don’t but if necessary, I will go and return the product anyway.

Michelle Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? Yes I do. I have to!
Do you ever impulse buy? I rarely buy on impulse unless I buy another product I have wanted for at least a couple weeks.
Do you feel comfortable returning products? No, but I have never had a huge desire to do so, either.

Lidalgirl Avatar

– Yes, pretty always. I don’t like to spend more of what I decided to.

– I did it sometimes, years ago, but now it’s quite unlikely to happen. My impulse buying were and still are music and books related 🙂

– In Italy we can’t, and this is another reason that compelled me to do rational shopping.

Very rarely do I have an impulse buy. I plan 99.9% of everything I buy. I follow Temptalia, Sephora & MAC. I read reviews & if not online, I will pointedly go to the store & apply the mu I’m interested in & wear it home to see how it looks in different lighting, if I have any allergic & how long it wears. Apart from MAC’s LEs, I’ll buy the products during a sale. If the store allows mu returns, I don’t feel uncomfortable returning a product if I change my mind. I keep both a mu w/l & a mu t/b ck’d out list.

3. No. (A) alot of stores here in trinidad have a no refunds no returns or return it and u have to pay a restocking fee (b) the ones that do, meticulously scrutinize what u return an make u feel shame lol and (c) i make sure in the store i absoloutely love the item and it can fit or fill what ever need it fills. If it turns out i hate it or whatever, i just sell it to a friend or throw it away if its inexpensive

Yes. If I paid for something and it doesn’t work (for me), I’ll return it.

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? Yes, usually. If i hear great reviews or see a product used on youtube that I know I will like, I’ll write it down on my Iphone to remind myself to get it.
Do you ever impulse buy? Usually I impulse buy while shopping online.
Do you feel comfortable returning products? I dont necessarily feel comfortable doing it, but I do it anyway especially with cosmetics because if it isn’t working, its not likely going to work at a later date and I do not like wasting my money on something I will never use. As well, return policies are in place for a reason, and its a customer’s right to return a product that isn’t working the way they had hoped.

Do you ever impulse buy? Yes but I kind of regret it haha
Do you feel comfortable returning products? No, the return policy here in Mexico it’s not really nice.

Jen Avatar

I do plan ahead of time, but sometimes I’m tempted to buy things on an impulse, too. Especially if salespeople come to me, and I discuss the product with them for some length of time, I feel bad about not buying it. Crazy, I know. As for returning, I hate doing it, but I do do it — if I had been forced to buy something on an impulse (see above) and I really can’t afford it, or if there’s something wrong with the product.

Debby Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?
Sometimes, if I really want something, I will plan to buy something when it comes out, but I don’t plan all of my purchases.

Do you ever impulse buy?
Yes. All the time. Nothing too pricy – I usually cap it at $50 for an impulse buy.

Do you feel comfortable returning products?
Not unless I really hate it. I can remember returning a Bare Escentuals eyeshadow that was patchy and looked terrible on me, but that’s about it. But that only applies to makeup – I have no problem returning clothes.

Kimberly Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?
Yep! I always make a list before I go shopping, otherwise I’d be tempted to buy out the entire store.

Do you ever impulse buy?
All the time! It doesn’t matter how many lists I make and how many times I tell myself I *don’t* need another lipstick, I always manage to buy one. That’s how I wound up buying my very first Yves Saint Laurent. 😉

Do you feel comfortable returning products?
Sure, why not! I usually find a fellow beauty junkie that would appreciate the product, though. My friends usually inherit any products I’m not in love with. I’d rather give something away than return it.

Becca Avatar

Do you feel comfortable returning products? no. I’ve never returned a product

Vanessa Avatar

Yes, Of course, Yes. In the case of the Naked palette, I planned on buying it the week it came out and was lucky I did because in Utah it took over a month for the stores to re-stock. I’m always buying stuff on the sample racks at Ulta and Sephora, I think they’re the best way to test out products. I always try to give my friends and family products I don’t like if they don’t work for me, but when a product really doesn’t meet any of the expectations they promote, I return it.

Mariella Avatar

Yes, I usually plan ahead what I’m going to buy (though I may change my mind when I see the product or if I come across something I like more).

Yes, I do frequently make impulse buys but they’re “controlled”, if that makes sense – it may not be something I had planned on buying but it’s not out of control “why did I ever buy this?” type purchasing.

Yes, I do feel comfortable returning stuff if the product doesn’t perform. It’s one of the reasons I really like the sampling programs so many companies and stores have – it saves everyone in the long run. And this is one of the reasons I’ve rarely had to return a product. I was a bit appalled a few weeks ago to read on Makeup Alley where one reviewer said she bought a product just to use for a special occasion and was going to return it after using it. I just think that is SO wrong and it ends up costing all of us because the companies always pass their losses on to the consumer.

Z Avatar

no, yes, and yes…

I always have an idea of what I want or what I’m looking for, but never make a list.
I always impulse buy =\ the idea I have in mind usually develops into more items that compliment the main idea.
I always feel comfortable returning items as long as they are unused, unopened, and with tags or same condition as bought…the only exception is items (makeup) that is over $50 (single item) and it is extremely bad quality.

Veronica Avatar

1.) Sometimes. I usually have a general idea of what I’m going to buy that day, usually organized by type of product.

2.) All the time, though I’m more likely to impulse buy a lower end brand. I’ll usually research a more expensive product I like first.

3.) Only if it’s seriously defective or if I purchased the wrong item by mistake – and the latter only if I haven’t opened the packaging in any way. I’m more likely to give it away if I don’t use it.

Rainy Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?
– I usually have a specific item in mind when I go shopping, plus a backup product if the original isn’t available.

Do you ever impulse buy?
– Not as much as I used to, but still more often then I should. I’m usually very good about not buying make up if I don’t need something specific, but when I really love something…I get weak.

Do you feel comfortable returning products?
– I have honestly never returned any sort of cosmetic product and didn’t even know you could until I started reading blogs. I think if the product was broken or defective then I’d have no problem returning it for the same product, but I don’t think I would ever return something just because the colors aren’t what I thought they were. Personally, I feel like I should be aware of what I’m buying before I spend the money on it.

Laurel Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? Usually, or at least how much money I’ll spend
Do you ever impulse buy? I’d be lying if I said no
Do you feel comfortable returning products? It depends on the reason. If it’s buyer’s remorse, then I don’t because I want to learn from it by forcing myself to live with the decision. If the product breaks me out or is the total wrong shade, I’ll usually exchange it for something else or the right color.

emily Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? – Yep. More like general categories – like a blush and I’ll check out a couple brands.

Do you ever impulse buy? – Yeah, I still need spontaneity in my life lol

Do you feel comfortable returning products? – I comfortable with bringing it back as soon as I can’t make a product work and only if the store has a good return policy (like MAC). But I’m still uncomfortable while having to defend myself to the sales person. So lately, I’ve been learning to be comfortable asking for samples or demos so I like the product before purchasing.

Kathryn Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?
Definitely! I usually buy drugstore/ELF cosmetics. I mostly stick to what I like with drugstore, so usually I’m buying replacements. I usually have an ELF wishlist though 🙂

Do you ever impulse buy?
Definitely. When there are irresistible sales!

Do you feel comfortable returning products?
I do. I often buy things I haven’t used before at WalMart because they’ll take almost anything back.

Maya Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time?
Oh yes…I usually do a lot of research and swatches before I buy, and really think about if a product is worth the money and something I will truly use and appreciate.

Do you ever impulse buy?
Very, very rarely. Only if there’s a great deal or something hard to find at my fingertips. Even then, it’s usually something I’ve looked into before. I really try to budget my money and spend well, so avoiding impulse buys is essential. Even if I go to the store and find something awesome, I’ll usually leave it and go home to read reviews and think about the purchase.

Do you feel comfortable returning products?
Yes, and I think everyone should! First of all, I read up on practically everything I buy and try to avoid products that probably won’t work for me (so returns aren’t very common for me unless I’m allergic). If a company makes a crappy product, I’m going to get my money back and let them know it’s bad! I have no problem paying for quality items but not for junk. As for the store I return these products to (like Sephora), they can rest assured that things like their generous return policy will keep me coming back to shop!

Emma Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? – Yes. I read dozens of reviews before I decided to buy the MAC studio fix fluid.LOL.. I usually go out with a list in mind.

Do you ever impulse buy? Yes, even though I got a list in mind, I still can’t resist something cute I see in the shops sometimes, I guess we all do. But now I would always take a look at the cart before check out, and take out something totally out of impulses. Still, not all of them, there’re always things that seem really useful the moment right before you buy them then suddenly useless after you paid.

Do you feel comfortable returning products? Yes, I think it’s a waste if I don’t use the products I purchased at all. But returning policies are really strict in Hong Kong, most stores(especially cosmetics&skincare) do not offer returns at all! So when there’s something doesn’t work out for me, I usually give it to a friend. So far, I’ve only returned stuff in Zara/H&M

Do you plan to buy? – Absolutely. I look at blogs and forums all the time for swatches. I plan out things to try on so I don’t waste a lot of time with stuff I don’t want. Plus swatches help me notice shades I might not have noticed before.

Do you ever impulse buy? – Yep. Sometimes I surprise myself and find something I didn’t think I would like at all. I love it when that happens!

Comfortable with returns? – Not really, but I will. I usually try to swap or sell first so the company doesn’t lose money and someone else can enjoy something I don’t. But sometimes, you just have to. Some of those products are really expensive.

2. Every once in a while I tend to buy mascara on impluse. Don’t know why because all mascaras are basically the same.
3. I hate taking stuff back but I do it frequently. I’ve been good lately though. Mac and sephora have pretty good return policies.

Natalie Avatar

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? 99% of the time I do plan ahead. It helps me budget!

Do you ever impulse buy? I do impulse buy, but almost always only small things. The more expensive it is, the longer I will take to think it over, walk out of the store and think, etc.

Do you feel comfortable returning products? I do. I only return products if it was exceptionally horrible, defective, or I just couldn’t get it to work. Sometimes I’ll just take the loss, like with cheapie mascara, etc, but the worst a product is and the more expensive it is make me more likely to return it.

Do you plan what you buy ahead of time? – Most of the time I have vague ideas of things I have seen or heard about that I want to purchase. However, I often change things around if I dont like the way it looks when I try it on.

Do you ever impulse buy? – I do impulse buy if I find something i like when I try it on. The last few things I bought on impulse were Mac lychee luxe lipglass and opi blasted in gold.

Do you feel comfortable returning products? – I feel comfortable returning products. I don’t do it often but if I don’t like something I would rather return it than waste my money.

1. Yes. Now I do because my makeup stash is getting out of hand. I now buy staples and things I do use on a daily basis. No more bright pink e/s in different hues for me.
2. I still do once in a while like today I bought the Boscia blotting linens on a whim. But they are really good so far.
3. I do feel comfortable returning especially at a high-end store. If it doesn’t work out, I know I could always return but lately I just ask for samples.
