I started going through the swatches like “wow those blushes look great!” And then we got down to the eyeshadows and that excitement turned to horror. Some of those look absolutely tragic!
Same here! Was so excited looking at the blushes, but the eyeshadows are awful!
I thought the exact same thing! Wow! The blushes look great, but oohh… Those shadows.
Hi Christine !
It would be so nice to have a big palette like this performing well but looking at the swatches I can already some misses…
Thank you Christine for your hard work and your awesome website!
Love from France
I saw this at Sephora. I didn’t get to swatch every shade, but I really liked the looks of the ones I did swatch. Some of these look a bit patchy, though. I also see 3 or 4 chunkier ones. Now I’m really curious to see your review.
I picked up the Kat von D palette this week, but seeing these swatches makes me want to snag this one, too! The colors are all so pretty & varied.
Must resist!
Definitely needs a primer. Maybe a base. I’m getting good at this, lol. Still, a good deal of you want alot of stuff I guess.
The warm blushes look pretty good, but many of the e/s look as if they might not even improve with primer. The edition 3 was very well accepted and executed, by all reviews, etc. This one looks sub par. Smashbox is fairly uneven, some product fab, some sucky. But, who isn’t these days? I like the color concept/selection far better than the execution.
The blushes are a better value than the shadows. That’s for sure. So many horrendous, powdery, dry… subpar eyeshadows.
Last year’s edition (Color and Contour) is the best palette I own. How could the fall so far?
Hmm, just based on the swatches, I’m guessing this is going to get around a B- rating. If performance isn’t there, maybe even a C to a C-. Some of those shadows, man . . . just tragic.
Thanks for swatching! I love seeing all the colors .. some are beautiful, some .. hmm, not so much.
Monica.
I have been back-and-forth on this item since it appeared on Sephora’s website. I love the colors and I have had good luck with Smashbox’s Photo Op formula, but some of these didn’t swatch all that great; however, they may perform better when applied. That said, I’ll wait on your review to finally decide if I should purchase or pass.
I ordered this several weeks ago on a whim from Sephora. I loved the look of it and the portability for traveling. Sadly, have yet to use it, but really looking forward to the review and looks. Still happy I bought it though. Now can’t wait to try it even more! 😉
Overall way better than I expected. Some (Cement especially) look shockingly bad.
The blushes look good but the shadows look like a real mixed bag. I also don’t like the bulky packaging, not travel or storage friendly. I do do like how the shadow colors are grouped by color, so it’s easy to figure out eye looks, and there’s a good mix of colors and finishes here. If there was a sale or promo, this might be ok, but a number of colors will need primer or cream base to help them out. If you have the money, I would go for the Marc Jacobs Style Con 20 palette – quality is better and more travel friendly
I don’t like the layout of the palette – it looks sort of disorganized. A few of the shadows look lovely but some that look so beautiful in the pan are so patchy and dry looking swatched, with less than good pigmentation.
I predict a delightful F or two! But these don’t seem to be in my color wheelhouse.
Some of the shades are painful to see swatched! It still seems like a good value though as most seem nice.
Is it just me or are those eye shadows dry, glittery and prone to fall out? Whilst some of the colours look gorgeous (especially the greens and blues), the quality looks really poor. Oh dear – and the blushes seemed like really gorgeous colours too.
I bought this because I love, love, LOOOOOVE last year’s palette.
What a massive disappointment. Ugh.
Hmmm… I really like how this palette looks, so refreshing to see a joyous, colorful Holiday set like that. But I’m really not impressed by the swatches. I’ll be waiting for your full review to learn more!
Thank you for swatching & reviewing this palette! I’ve had my eye on it for the past couple weeks, and depending on your review I might just bite the bullet and purchase it. 🙂
I own a few of their trio eyeshadows and don’t like it at all. They were dry and powdery and not very pigmented. But this was over 5 years ago in their old packaging. I’m curious to see how this palette rates. steel op and oxidize certainly caught my attention!
Scrolling through this was like riding a roller coaster! The first few swatches I was excited, but then soon after it all went downhill. Pity. It looked like a good one, but I’ll be skipping this.
I love this set! I hope it gets some good reviews so I know if I should really, truly get it or save for something else. It’s just such a wide range of colors and such, a lot of which I don’t have (I love makeup, but can only afford so much) so I’d like to get it!
The Alabaster one is a near perfect match for your arm colour, heh.
The gold and the others with chunkier glitter are obviously problematic, in the way that eyeshadows with chunky glitter tend to be. The rest of the eyeshadows, I don’t see any that shouldn’t perform okay over a primer, really, which I almost always wear. And the cheek options all look nice. So I’m definitely still tempted.
I tend to like Smashbox’s eyeshadows; they work well for me in the ways that I normally wear eyeshadow.
Do some of these companies consciously put these duds in their palettes?? Maybe figuring that A) it will be a gift so the number of people returning it will be few, or B) in a palette this big, one probably will find a few colors that are HG so they will just keep it (and simply not use the subpar colors). Either way, I don’t understand how some companies let obviously flawed products make it through the initial stages and all the way in to a consumer’s hands.
If I didn’t already own way too many eyeshadows than I could even hope tonget through in a lifetime, or if most of the blush shades weren’t completely unwearable, I would consider this. Yes, some of the eyeshadows look like they can take some effort, but nothing so horrible they won’t yield a good result. Overall, I think it’s a great option.
Oh boy! These blushes look fantastic! But the eyeshadows? Half look very good, and the rest look patchy or chunky. And 2 barely show at all. Not sure what to make of this mega-palette!
Not sure whether my comment came through or not, because I was in the hospital infusion center, and sometimes reception or ability to send out gets messed up. If a duplicate came through, please disregard this.
Looked like a nice selection until the swatches – some of the pale eyeshadows look terrible swatched! Barely any colour payoff! I love the blushes and some of the eyeshadows but think I’d expect better quality for my money.
Oh man this palette in person was soooo nice, but I missed testing out some of those trouble shades you swatched. I was excited as we got another iteration of the Master Class III palette though…
But I wish that the Master Class III was permament instead. lol
The plum blush is to die for! I need to find a dupe ASAP! In other news some of those shadow swatches look absolutely tragic. Yiiikes. They’re all such nice colors too so the lackluster performance is an even bigger disappointment!
I wish CoulourPop would do a holiday liquid lipstick set. *swoon* Anyway, this mega-palette seems pretty decent actually, even with some of the misses.
I just reviewed this on the blog yesterday and OH. MY. GOD I cannot emphasize enough how much I LOVE this palette!!! The design is obviously amazing, but I also love that the overall quality is really good – at least imo it is.
Beautiful!
Gloss and Magic
I bought this when it first released (after watching Tarababyz’s review on youtube) and I find the palette performs very well. Sure, some colours need building, but you can actually do that with this formula. They build, they blend, and I find them nice to work with. I am not very talented, so I don’t tend to do complicated looks, but for normal use I really like it!
I’m still trying to process how small the palette actually seems compared to how large I thought it was going to be. Some of those shadows are less than stellar. =(
I grew up in the 80’s and my first eyeshadow was a blue WNW shadow. I’m pretty sure it was better quality than some of the shadows in that set. Pity, they looked so promising in the pan.
I bought this palette when it first came out…some of the colours were nicely pigmented but a lot of them were not. Longevity (even with shadow primer and white base) was 6-7 hours tops…colours were really washed out by the end of my work day. Very disappointing so back to Sephora it went!
I have this palette – I’ve been dying to try Smashbox blush and this was a great value. I love their blush! All the colors but two look great on me (Prism which I can use as a hightligter and Sunset – brown tones are not for me)
The shadows are not as bad as everyone thinks. There are a few which admittedly, are a big chunky and have a lot of glittery fall out. Mainly it’s Charmed, Sea, Cosmic and Celestial. They really need a primer base or something like NYX Milk white shadow pencil underneath to bring out any color at all. Cosmic is similar to Mac’s Vellum (Pro Shade), it’s meant to be layered to give a duochrome effect, so the other shades that have a similar consistency can be used in the same manner. There’s not one shade that I found that was overly powdery or stiff. They all blend well.
I am curious what your review is for this palette. It gets mixed reviews. I would like to know before the sephora f&f please. Thanks you for all you do.
