Sneak Peek: Marc Jacobs The Free Spirit (224) Holiday 2015 Palette Photos & Swatches
Marc Jacobs Beauty The Free Spirit (224) Style Eye-Con No. 20 Eyeshadow Palette
Marc Jacobs Beauty The Free Spirit (224) Style Eye-Con No. 20 Eyeshadow Palette ($99.00 for 0.564 oz.) includes twenty eyeshadows with two being repeats (though not sure exactly from what palette) and eighteen being brand new. The palette is new and limited edition for the holidays. It is the largest palette I’ve seen from the brand (even larger than the contour palette!) but seemed not quite as flimsy as the contour palette. The brand actually mentions that they’re coordinated by row, but they seem better coordinated by column to me–to my eye, the palette didn’t make total sense in its color scheme until I looked at the color combinations vertically. Full review to come!
For those keeping track of value:
- Style Eye-Con No. 20 | $99.00 for 0.564 oz. or $175.53 oz.
- Value: Using the 7-pan palettes, this contains $138.65 worth of eyeshadow; using the trios, this contains $169.20 worth of eyeshadow
- Style Eye-Con No. 07 | $59.00 for 0.24 oz. or $245.83/oz.
- Style Eye-Con No. 03 | $42.00 for 0.14 oz. or $300.00/oz.

Looks promising! >fingers crossed<
Some of these look really beautiful, while others just look average. It’s a great value, but it’ll come down to whether or not I like enough of them to justify spending that much on a single item.
I’m still not the best at discerning quality by swatches. So, I will wait it out for the review. But, my wallet is “shaking in his boots” about this one. I love the color scheme. Is it me, or is the Mac Macnificent me palette almost contained within this one? I was going to get the MAC. But, depending on ratings, may got with this.
Something about these swatches just looks rather dry to me.
these are so buttery. this palette has blown me away. the way the colors translate to the eye is perfection.
Yay! Thanks, Christine! I’ve been waiting for swatches at the very least for this palette! It’s not in the Canadian Sephora site yet so I’ve been stalking for swatches/reviews while waiting. I only have the Starlet palette which has great quality shadows but I’ve found his other ones to be not the best for the price. So I thought I’d grab this because it’s a much better deal for 20 shades. They’re all pretty and wearable colors—lots of neutrals which is surprising considering many of the holiday palettes right now are very bright and colorful. I’ll be honest though, the swatches look smooth but they don’t seem to pack a lot of punch except maybe for #10. I worry that on the eyes, the looks with these colors might just seem like a bit of a light, neutral wash especially if you have medium to dark skin. The shades also seem fairly dupable. So torn!!! But I might just get it because I don’t have a lot of his eyeshadows and I’m a collector (the excuse I conveniently use every time I want something I don’t need, which is often).
Thanks, Christine! You are doing an amazing job of keeping us posted on all these holiday releases. It really helps us pick and choose where to splurge and save. =)
Christine, thanks SO MUCH for providing the cost breakdown. After the eye opener about that Hourglass palette, I think I’m becoming a bit more gun-shy. It is nice to see a prestige company like MJ delivering good value. I’ve never bought any of his eyeshadow palettes but I might actually spring for this one – there seems to be lots to love in this. I’ll be eager to see your review.
Am I the only one that thinks the packaging looks like an adult Polly Pocket? Anyone? Just me?
I read this, went back up and looked at the palette, decided you are completely right. Hello favorite childhood toy! And now I’m using that as my final justification that I need to buy the palette. I only own 1 of the Marc Jacobs palettes (bright summery one, Siren I think), and while I love the shadows the other palettes just didn’t jump at me but this does.
Haha it does!
The price is absuuuuuuuuuuuurd!! 99 dollars?????????!!!!! I know the value is169 but recent years makeup companies have really jacked up their prices, . All palettes nowadays either hover around fifty dollars or surpass it. I have noticed it happening in the past couple of years.
The old palettes also used to be high value, so the high value is not a new thing. I’d be damned if I pay that price for these es, I’d expect them to be groundbreaking and at that price with a personalized appt from Lisa Eldridge.
I know viseart is 80 dollars which is very very very expensive but at least they are perceived widely as exceptional.
MJB is pretty much on par with say Dior, Chanel, etc. for pricing – and if you look at the pricing of those brands’ palettes and sets (which probably contain less product, actually), they are in the $100ish range as well! Most high-end or luxury brands pricing is much higher than $50 for a palette (look at YSL). It’s in line, I would say, but it is a lot to put down on a single product!
Thanks for the swatches Christine. Many of the colors are calling my name. Now the palette just needs to come onto the Canadian Sephora website so I can buy.
Those purples are a shame as per usual :/
Awwwwww this looks awesome! To bad I don’t live in the US 🙁 x
I’m in love with this, truly! From that sleek, black casing and giant mirror to every colour except No. 14… Guess this is going on my Christmas wishlist!
The purples need some help from a primer, but otherwise this looks pretty good. There are a lot of light shades, but they look different on your skin. I think the color selection is beautiful and cohesive. I most likely won’t get it, though.
Oh man those swatches are looking nice! I like the color scheme and actually agree with you that they mesh better as rows. Seems like a nice palette to have either way. I can’t wait for your full review!
17 18 and 19 last ok like they’ll look identical once on the lid… But there’s something about this palette that I love. Maybe because the only other shadow I would need for travel is a neutral brow bone highlight and maybe an inner corner highlight.
Waiting for the review but looks promising
Well, they had the WORST promo pic for this one! From the pic, it looked like the size of a blush kit, the pans looked like small dots, and half the colors looked too light. This kit actually looks very promising. I don’t see any duds here, and the colors are well organized by column, a nice mix of colors and finishes, and you can come up with so many eye looks. Great for travel or touch ups at the desk. Thanks also for calculating the value. Christine, are the pans the size of a dime or quarter??
Larger than a dime (well, to my eye), but they’re not the size of a quarter.
BTW, thanks for the sneak peeks! They help a LOT! I can usually eyeball the swatches to see if the quality is there, and figure out whether to pull the trigger or not. And with brands launching products super early, well before the official launch date (ie UD Spectrum, Becca Afterglow, etc etc), I have to jump on these LE items before they are sold out, so I can’t always wait for the full review.
So perhaps the size of a nickel?
Larger than a nickel, I think, but I don’t have any to compare (only quarters and pennies, apparently!). Instead, I just measured, and they are 22mm in diameter.
I agree! The promo pic was really overexposed and washed out the lighter shades. Although, I use highlight type shades a lot, and I vary mine. I don’t mind having a few really light colors, especially if the pans are smaller. If there were only one, I’d use it up and then have to go outside the palette.
I thought the pans and overall palette were much smaller, too. At least now it seems more worth the money. It’s still expensive, but it’s high end, so no surprise there.
LOL Right? Thought promo pics were suppose to make the product look good, not worse
I think a lot of companies overexpose their product shots. I have no idea why.
It definitely makes more sense if you look at the columns of color vs rows of color. I still don’t know because this is a lot to spend. Maybe on sale, but there are 3 other palettes that have my attention before this. Hmmmm
I noticed that the columns make a lot of sense, as well. Each column could be a very pretty standalone quad. If this is still around for the VIB sale, I might pick it up. Looking forward to the full review.
I feel like I just need this palette lol
Your swatches and pics of this palette are sooo much better than the promo pics MJB had going up! ?Looks way more promising than I had feared they would look. Probably still too light a theme overall for my skintone, I think. But it is quite beautiful! Thank you so much for these swatches, Christine, I imagine you’re being literally swamped with holiday palettes at the moment . ?
This looks promising. I eagerly await the reviews and the grades. At the same time I hope this palette makes it to my part of the world, and, to my closest MJB counter.
I really, really like some of the colours in this palette, and I can see a lot of fun makup time coming from it.
I’m liking this one quite a lot. Depending on the rating, I’m either bunying it or looking for dupes of the ones I liked the most.
I ordered this and it is on the way to me. MJ will probably be the only high-end holiday collection I will get because the others look so boring/do no interest me at all. I just received the MJ holiday eyeliner set and can’t wait to play with them. I won’t get the lipstick holiday kit because I already have the majority of the shades in full size.
While this palette looks much better than I initially thought it would, I promised myself that I wouldn’t buy anything with a lot of high-shimmer or glittery shadows this year. I already have enough glittery shadows for an entire kindergarten class to do a major art project! I ordered the KVD palette last night (won’t be opening it until Christmas) in order to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone. =)
I think this is a great palette with plenty of mattes to work with. I am very tempted!
Yes – there are quite a few similar looking shades here in the lighter colours, plus the obligatory rich chocolate and black matte that I am tired of seeing. The pigmentation looks quite varied from the swatches too. I still don’t think it’s as good as the UD Spectrum palette….
DING! DING! DING! Ladies and gentlemen we may have a winner. My weeks of virtual Temptalia window shopping just led to a product going from my wish list into my CART instead of of being removed to product oblivion. I feel like from swatches alone I can call it buuuuuut it IS a hundred bucks so I’m going to try and wait. Don’t be surprised if I pop up saying I caved though lol
Well, mine is arriving tomorrow so we’ll see how it goes. I wasn’t expecting the shadows to be quite as small as you described, but then again it takes me ages to go through shadows and I don’t have any marc jacob’s shadows at all. I though this would be a good intro set. I’m not the type that’s scared to spend on a product where there’s a good value for the brand, and I don’t need every set out there.
The question is, how are the shadows ? 🙂 Waiting for your review! I certainly will now touch my palette until I read it, but I had to grab it just in case!
My wallet thanks Sephora Italia&MJB because they never release this amazing palette here in Italy 🙁
Shade 8, 10 and 13 look soooooo pretty! <3 Those definitely stand out for me.
I see myself using all the shades in this palette. And that’s really surprising. Almost every palette I own have shades I never use.
I don’t own any MJ items .. well one eye liner, but would love to pick this up as my “holiday palette” .. I at least buy one holiday palette per year 🙂
Monica.
Oh, I love the packaging. My favorite shades are 11 and 12. Everything else I already have or can live without.
This is a very nice palette. I won’t be buying because of the price tag (too much competition for a lower price tag) but the color selection is pretty.
A few look below average, can’t wait to see your review.
This is so beautiful, but I just cannot bring myself to spend $100 for an eyeshadow palette. I think I’ll save up for one of their permanent eye shadow palettes… still expensive, but it’s fun to have something fancy. 🙂
