Make Up For Ever Lustrous Shadow Palette ($49.00 for 0.60 oz.) includes 12 powder eyeshadows housed in a plastic tin. Inside, it includes a foam insert that holds the pans in the palette, and it was not particularly secure (if I turned it upside down, the insert and all the pans started dropping out).

I was caught off guard by the brand’s description of this year’s holiday palette, because it made several mentions of the formula being new: “newest innovation” and “unique formula” and “formulated with 25 percent more pigment” and “be the first to try this new formula.” I sent an email off to the brand about whether it truly is a new formula and if/when it would rollout, but upon an attempt to read through ingredient lists, the ingredient lists for M100 (matte black) and ME518 (gold) differed enough that it did seem like a new formula.

The colors, generally, lined up with the shades of the same number in the current Artist Shadow range, but there were new shades here and then the brand snuck in two shades that are actually blushes (matte red and plum). I have to go and do real comparisons for texture for the mattes, but these seemed like they might not be quite as powdery/silky but not to the point where blendability was sacrificed but rather less fallout. The shimmers did feel less dense, not quite as heavy on the silicones. The one shade that seemed to be inconsistent with the same numbered shade in the current range was ME840, as it was noticeably drier and significantly less shimmery/metallic.

Here’s hoping that the new formula is just as good, if not improved as they say, compared to the Artist Shadow one… particularly since Artist Shadow is one of the best formulas on the market, so I’m not even sure why they would change it.

This looks like a nice palette. I have a number of MUFE shadows, all finishes. I find they swatch beautifully, but don’t always perform well on my lid. I think it’s the satin finishes where I need to apply multiple layers on my lid to get the intensity.

I like this palette too! I have a number of these shades in the regular formula. I struggle more with the shimmers as well which is weirdly similar to my experiences with ABH shimmers. I find I need to break through that initial surface tension in the pan and use stiffer brushes.. Mac 239. Everyone raves about the shimmers, but I generally find them trickier than the mattes.. both MUFE and ABH

I’ve heard people have trouble with the satin finishes, but those and the Iridescent are my favourite eyeshadows to use! I do find you need to use them a bit differently, but they apply true to colour on my pigmented lids, and I find them very controllable – it’s so easy to get a polished look compared to other eyeshadow formulas.

Yes, it is unusual to change a formula when it’s already proven to be good…..but brands love to tinker with their formulas and sometimes it ends up in tears.
I love the 9 pan concept, but lots and lots of pinks/reds, a matte black and a white…. the really nice addition was the khaki.
Your eye looks is just beautiful Christine.

This looks very nice, pigmentation looks decent, so I hope they blend well. I am a bit bamboozled at the blushes though – surely they would be considered multipurpose powders (though I doubt that translates in French quite as nicely…)

Denise S.,
No it’s not just you…i think there are many similar palettes out there right now. This reminds me alot of ABH Mod Ren palette mninus a few colors here and there. And a ton of warm palettes also. I feel like I already have dupes of these palette shades in my stash. Wonder why MUFE changed their eyeshadow formula?

It’s definitely not just you. I own and have seen enough palettes like this to last me a lifetime and it’s disappointing that is what they came out with when they’ve sort of been out of the game for a while now. I feel like every week it’s another burgundy/pink/purple/sunset palette.

Another one I might just as well not pretend I won’t get. Not as many repeats as usual. (Forewent last Xmas for that reason.). Although I must admit to some confusion over a new formula. Reminds me of UD lipstick, changing from Revolution to Vice. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. And mufe AS def were not broken. The red is one number off from Morello Cherry, which I always wishlisted. In fact, I thought it WAS Morello cherry. Tres similar. 2 other wishlists here, and adore new 549. I find it bizarre that they would reformulate, when there is such a huge shade range and the shadows are simply magnificent. The only upside on this is that the AS might get marked down, if d/c’d. That would make for one huge haul for me! This is not doing particularly well on Sephora reviews, but most are complaining about the packaging.

Been using this one for a few days. Working with different primers to see if I can make it work but so far, by the end of the day the shimmers in my looks look great and the mattes are gone. Waiting on a small z-palette to make its way to me to de-pot this one into – I *think* the size will work out perfectly. I had high hopes for this being my go-to travel palette, but have to get that matte issue worked out 🙁

There are some really nice shadows in here for me – ones I can wear and would wear – but, again, those reds aren’t for me. And as nice as this palette may be, every time I see one of these, all I can think is “another imitation of Modern Renaissance”. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, they say, but a lot of us want to see something “new” rather than what seems like a bit of a rehash of someone else’s great idea. Of course, if I could wear all these shadows, I’d be singing a different tune because this does look really nice and the packaging is nice (though I really hate that MUFE logo) and there is minimal wasted space in it.

I like the looks of this a lot, and I’m thrilled MUFE didn’t do another repeat-laden holiday palette.. I have any of these shades in the Artist Shadows. The packaging sounds less than stellar. I would most likely just take the shadows out of the foam and put into a Zpalette, then use the plastic case for something else.

There’s a nice shade range and yet similar to other palettes on the market. I’m not fussy for the removable lid and eyeshadow pans that could fall out. I have a habit of dropping or knocking items that seem secure, so that feature alone could take this palette out of contention.

I would have bought this as I wanted to try MUFE’s shadows in a palette but this colour scheme is everywhere and I probably have 100 dupes :/

I was just checking to see if Sephora Canada had this palette on its site yet and it does ($58, for anyone interested) but a few of the purchaser comments mentioned just what Christine mentioned about the packaging – flimsy and cheap. Several of the reviewers (I think there were only 6 or 9 as this is still very new) said they returned it – not impressed with the shadows or the cheap packaging.

One thing I would love to know is why companies just love to change formulas that are amazing. Like, what makes you just want to put in a different formula that’s subpar to the old formula?
This holiday palette reminds me more of a fall palette than something for the holidays. M847 is the only color that reminds me of the holidays somewhat. I was hoping for a holiday palette with less neutrals in them, especially from MUFE.

Could just be that they want to produce their eyeshadows more cheaply to increase their profit margin, and some ingredients are just cheaper than others for various reasons. Usually, it has to do with supply issues. For example, let’s say that talc has suddenly become scarce for some reason (and will continue to be scarce), then the price of it will shoot up and cosmetics companies have to sit there like “well, shit, we can’t continue to offer our usually talc-filled formulas at the same price we once were, and consumers won’t buy it if we drastically increase the price, so we need to reformulate ASAP.”

Valerie Avatar

For the formula change, it could possibly be for this holiday palette and not the regular range as they wanted to make a certain amount in a short amount of time for the holiday time. And as for the new purple shadow, it looks like the discontinued #92
