Sneak Peek: Looxi Beauty Highlighters Photos & Swatches

Looxi Beauty Highlighters
Looxi Beauty Highlighters

After several strong reader recommendations, I decided to check out Looxi Beauty Highlighters ($7.50 for 0.20 oz. pans or $15.00 for 0.35 oz. in compact). They had quite a few in-stock when I purchased (about a week and a half ago), though it looks like some are out-of-stock or only in-stock in compacts. I’ll be testing these over the next several weeks, but here are swatches of the 17 I bought in the meanwhile!

Update: I have spent the last two weeks attempting to corroborate a story told in the comments regarding formula safety/reaction, and I have not been able to find any record of:

1.) Threads on Reddit at all regarding anything negative on Looxi for formula or customer service; the only comment I saw at all that was remotely negative was with respect to a longer turnaround/shipping time around Black Friday
2.) Records of open or closed disputes on BBB or letters or warnings issued by FDA (there is nothing when one searches for Looxi Beauty)
3.) Any indication from the larger makeup community of general issues or wrongdoing by this brand

I have also reached out to the brand owner and have been told there has been ongoing harassment and threats made with the brand owner having a cease & desist letter mailed to the user (I have a copy) (they have also stated that none of the statements were true). I have not been able to corroborate any detail from the information provided by the user. Before I try an indie or new brand, I do search through and look for any potential issues with quality, repackaging, customer service, etc. and could not find anything on this brand before I purchased. I have reached out to fellow bloggers who are more involved in the indie beauty community, and they could not recall anything either. A supporter of Looxi Beauty did provide links to their Instagram account (@maquillage_savant) with screen shots of this user making threats and various accusations and saw at least one additional Instagram user (a makeup artist) who said they were also harassed by the same user previously.

I also reached out to the user, asking them to share more information about their experience to help me get to the bottom of everything. Unfortunately, the response was unexpected – they threatened me/Temptalia multiple times (and didn’t refer to or help with this topic). I have never had reason before to investigate a reader’s claims/experiences about a product, but the claims went from “I didn’t like this product” to saying that the brand itself was acting wrongly and committing violations of cosmetic safety — both things that are important to be aware of if and when purchasing from a brand — but also have legal consequences if totally untrue and having had no luck finding additional information on my own, I thought I would best proceed with caution.

At this point, I cannot find anything that indicates there is a safety issue with the brand. There are both positive and constructive reviews on the brand, and I have not seen ongoing comments that ever refer back to an incident (as in, someone posts on Reddit’s MUA about Looxi, nothing in the comments indicates bad behavior or they wouldn’t buy, which is very common with brands that have any issues, even if minor). It is pretty hard to completely wipe out something from the internet, and there are accounts devoted to bringing awareness to questionable indie brands, but I wasn’t able to find mention of Looxi.

With respect to claims of bullying of customers, a few individuals have come forward with more detailed accounts along with providing screen shots of their communications (particularly on Instagram) with the brand and/or the brand’s supporters along with the brand owner voluntarily providing me with their side of the story. I continue to listen as new information becomes available. Concerned parties may reach me at christine[at]temptalia.com.

Oh I am so excited that you are reviewing these! Not only am I curious to know what you think of the formula, but your swatches will be super helpful!! I chickened out of some of the more “out there” colors like Wicked and Luna because I just couldn’t get a good idea of the effect from their website, and their really aren’t a ton of reviews out there. Their products are really fun but the images on the site leave a lot to be desired. I kind of hope they move away from the vanilla scent, too :p

Lys Avatar

These shades all look gorgeous! Valley Girl: whoa!! I’m a bit confused about the brand naming them highlighters though, I would wear most of them as eyeshadow. Nonetheless, excited for your review 😀

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

Christine, how long did shipping take? I also looked at the highlighters after several other readers recommended them. But when I looked, the site indicated it could take 7 – 10 days to process before shipping. And then shipping was via USPS Priority. For me, since the business is on the other side of the country, that adds the full 3 mail days to whatever it takes to process. So, my big question to you after you’ve had a chance to test out what you purchased (and others that use the products), is it worth waiting 2-3 weeks for an order from Looxi? Thanks!

Christine Avatar

Mine was really fast, like fast period, exceptionally fast for an indie, though. It’s like anything else – would you pre-order something you wanted? Because a pre-order takes just as long. As long as I don’t need it that very second, I wouldn’t say that waiting too long would make it worth it or not worth it, you know?

Julia Avatar

I was kind of concerned about the stated timeframe, too, but I think they are just making sure not to over-promise. I placed my order very early on a Wednesday morning and had it in my mailbox the NEXT DAY. Now to be fair, I live in the same metro area as Looxi (Chicago), but still – that means she had this posted the same day I ordered!

Sparrow Avatar

I’ll pipe up since I’m constantly ordering from this brand (all eyeshadows and highlights are Looxi) and it’s mostly a one woman operation there. Also, the owner is currently moving so TAT is much slower.

Michele @Binxcat4ever Avatar

Rachel and Sparrow – Thank you! IDK, I thought about it last night and while I am impatient, I think there’s a difference between pre-ordering something special or LE vs. waiting for a regular product. I do agree that if a product is something special, it’s probably worth waiting for but on the other hand if it’s dupable or something that isn’t say an A- Christine rating, I’m not so sure I’d be willing to wait. Like a few other readers, i do like the range of interesting highlighter shades (like the blue) so I guess I’ll see how they do.

PanamaDoll Avatar

Or wear just the highlighter and a well blended fierce contour and simple contoured eye as well, with a bright lippie, I think would look super cute!

Aditi Avatar

I might be in the minority here but I feel like highlighters are becoming overdone (or it might just be me being bitter because oily skins and highlighters don’t mix…)

I feel like these have some amount of glitter to them… if that’s the case they’ll be a hard pass. Some of them look like they’d make really pretty eyeshadows, though!

Elizabeth Avatar

I like high lighters on others, but like you, I have oily skin, and they just make me look greasy. I have an old gold high lighter that I got from an Avon Christmas collection in 1984 that was huge, and it didn’t make me look greasy, just polished. I have a tiny bit around the edges of the pan I should send to 3 Custom Color to have replicated. The only place I can get away with highlighting is my cupid’s bow, under my eye brows, and a little tiny area over my cheeks, under my eyes, and toward my temples. Anything else or more, and it looks like I need to wash my face.

Katherine T. Avatar

Oh my gosh, the colors are stunning and unique!! They remind me of duo chrome or foiled shadows from Makeup Geek. I’ve been so curious about these since several reader raved about them. And so affordable. Can’t wait to see your reviews!

Holly Avatar

I don’t have any of her highlighters, but I own several of her eyeshadows. The shimmer shadows are beautiful! My favorites are Spoiled, Latte, Georgia On My Mind, Obsessed, and Savant.

Joy Avatar

Being a highlighter junkie I tried these way back. I thought it was a joke, ordered more. The consistency is terrible and changed from batches, some gave me severe skin reactions and they have no staying power. I looked into it further and found an article someone wrote about hygiene issues not being inspected and this brand misrepresenting their ingredients. I will not ever try them again. I’m happy they are loved because they don’t cost much. Helpful for people needing dupes. But just because an indie brand becomes s trend because a handful of people make it so, does not make it safe or a reliable company. I don’t care if one or 1 million people run it. It has to be done right before sold. All things checked and established safe. I’ve found these colors to have been around a long time from other companies who run small batches but those companies aren’t paid for by another shoving them in people’s face as if they will save your life. A good brand doesn’t have to. My opinion only. If it works for you more power to you.

Christine Avatar

I’m not being paid to show these, and I do not take money for reviews from any brand, period. I purchased these myself based on readers’ consistent recommendations about this brand and its product. I wasn’t able to find anything with respect to issues with their ingredients – could you please share with us? I keep up with Reddit’s IMAM and MUA, but I did not see any drama related to this brand or possible issues.

Joy Avatar

Weird. I’m guessing it was deleted for their protection. It was a big blowup. A lot of people ganged up on one person who went on to blog about cyber bullying. Happened last year. Never accused you of being paid. I’ve never had Instagram because I hear of nasty bullying and buying temptations. If this brand originated there like some in comments say Than I would not doubt the deletions. I kept my negative experience to myself. I ordered the same ones again. They were different. My skin got wrecked. That’s my business. That other person was bullied so badly. Why tell people I had a bad experience? I have bad reactions to tons of makeup but I won’t touch these due to the strong influence of Instagram trends and I don’t support bullying as an excuse for anyone posting a negative review. I’m sure you don’t either!

Christine Avatar

Not sure how they could get something deleted, especially on something like Reddit, and I don’t know that I’ve seen anything wiped clean on the internet. That is very strange indeed! If you had severe reactions, I would highly encourage you to write to the brand to let them know, because those things are important if the brand wants to improve. Just think in the case of food contamination: if no one reports, then everybody suffers.

Francesca Avatar

That’s so weird. I keep up with Reddit’s MUA & IMAM community and never heard anything bad about this brand. The mods also do not delete bad reviews. The only blow up that sounded like what you were talking about may be Phyrra posting why she would never support Shiro. That thread was deleted by Phyrra herself. In fact, Looxi only started getting mentioned recently, and I have never heard of them through IMAM/MUA before.

Julia Avatar

Wow… just made my way back to this posting today since Looxi just re-launched and I am so shocked that this happened! That is just terrible that you were threatened, so strange 🙁

Rachel Avatar

I had a feeling there was something flaky going on here. Thank you for the update. You go above and beyond for your readers! I’m so sorry you got threatened in the process.

Robin Avatar

I purchased eyeshadows and highlighters from this brand in October 2015. I was severely cyber bullied on Instagram by the owner of the company and her Instagram friends. They quickly deleted everything they said to me and I did not have a chance to screenshot, but I was in total disbelief that they could treat a customer that way. Calling me names then blocking me. I paid money for these and there is no excuse for such treatment from a business. After this happened a bunch of people on Instagram reached out to me saying they saw what she said to me and that they were cyber bullied too. To make matters even worse, the product quality is awful and exactly what you described! This is the worst brand I have ever come across and totally made me rethink purchasing from indie brands altogether.

Christine Avatar

My email remains open if you want to tell me more, or if you are able to have others reach out to me with similar experiences: christine@temptalia.com.

At this time, I was not able to corroborate the user you are replying to’s claims after hours of research/searching as well as reaching out to the user and the brand owner, where the user threatened me and refused to help me (I was just trying to gather information). Please see my fuller response to @Francesca above!

Bonnie Avatar

I’ve personally seen Looxi’s friends/supporters gang up on and bully people on IG who have given negative comments or reviews on her products. I think she and Maquillage Savant are the same person, as maquillage savant has posted private direct messages that were sent to Looxi from her customers, with the intention of humiliating and/or discrediting anyone who speaks out against Looxi’s products or practices. I can’t personally speak to her product quality because I’ve never tried it, but it seems inconsistent at best. I refuse to patronize her now though because of how unprofessionally she has behaved online.

Joy Avatar

I’ve only seen one reader with consistent love for these. Again I hope they improved to take it seriously as it was al over MUA and Reddit. I looked back. Deleted. Other reviews were deleted too I see. I’m hoping these turn out to be better. Not everyone can find or afford the unusual colors or are aware they exist in other brands. ?

Christine Avatar

Several regular, long-time readers have mentioned them, but since I see every comment, it’s not a surprise that I can remember them more specifically 🙂

I don’t think you should purchase from them if your skin has had such a severe reaction – you are so brave to have even tried ordering again but seems like a very unnecessary risk to take.

Francesca Avatar

I’ve been on MUA & IMAM regularly for 3 years. I’ve honestly never heard of these bad reviews before. Are you sure it’s Looxi and not some other brand?

Rachel R. Avatar

I own four of these highlighters, but mine are recent purchases. The quality is exceptionally good and my sensitive skin and eyes have had no problems with them. I’m sorry you went through a tough time with them, but at least it seems there has been a lot of improvement from what you’re describing. I don’t blame you for not wanting to use them again after going through that, though.

Paz Avatar

I’m glad you bring up the hygiene issue. Someone on YouTube said these products were ‘hand pressed’, and I can’t be the only one that is like… wtf. You can make and sell cosmetics at home without proper equipment or any regulations? I’m may be completely wrong and in that case I apologize, but I’m a bit iffy about some indie makeup brands out there.

Christine Avatar

This should answer all of your questions, Paz, about what you can and cannot do as a cosmetic brand: http://www.fda.gov/cosmetics/resourcesforyou/industry/ucm388736.htm

“6. Can I manufacture cosmetics in my home or salon?

It’s not against the law to manufacture cosmetics in your home. Keep in mind, however, that it’s your responsibility to manufacture products in an environment that will not cause them to become adulterated.”

Susan Parker Avatar

Hey Nancy!

I’m an NC15 and I love the bluish Luna; however, I can’t imagine how it would look on me. Why and how do you think it would be good on paler skintones?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts on the matter!

Sue

Nancy T Avatar

Very pale or very dark skintones can *usually*, but not always, can carry a bluish, sheered out highlighter because their base tone doesn’t compete with the ethereal bluish tones. Unless, of course the individual has warmer features: golden, copper, auburn toned or hues in their hair because that would likely compete with/ clash with the blue tones. Also could be an issue if the person has too much yellow within their skintone as that would turn it green! My skin is far too warm to wear it. Yours, while much lighter, does have a lot of warmth, as well.

makeuplovermegan Avatar

Hi there! I can’t compare myself to any MAC shades because I refuse to put them on my face, however I’m a pretty neutral mid-tone and I am OBSESSED with Luna and Ever After! Those are actually two of my favorite from her collection, and I literally have them all except Voodoo. Valley Girl is another fave. It really is a fun color and makes as killer highlight!

Brandi Avatar

I loooove her highlights! I bought the whole aurora set when it came out and I have valley girl and bombshell. They are so easy to apply and stunning. Stunning is the most appropriate word I can come up with for these. Stunning.

Ginny Avatar

My first impression is that they look kind of dry on the whole….. BUT there are some really interesting colors, I am really drawn to all the white-ish ones with color flash, and Pandora looks like an even pinker version of one of my faves, CP’s Smokin’ Whistles. And 7.50 for each pan… pssh sold. I’ve been looking to buy some highlighters in pan-only, but they’re aren’t that many formulas that come that way (I’m casually waiting for Makeup Geek to come out with some, but this works, too lol). I appreciate you giving your time and money to review these, Christine 🙂

Julia Avatar

I just bought some of these about a week ago (6 colors), and I would agree that in person, they are a little bit dry and crumbly in the pan. However, since it’s a product that is always applied sheer, I don’t think the dryness comes across once on the skin. Even though I have them already, though, I am still looking forward to Christine’s review 🙂

MissJae1908 Avatar

YAY indie brands! I’ve been hearing great things about this company. Can’t wait to hear your review. Ever After is calling my name!

Lyraida Avatar

Oh, I’m SO HAPPY you’re reviewing these. I’ve really wanted a greenish highlighter for a while, but I hadn’t seen a single swatch of Voodoo so I’ve been holding out. Ever After also looks amazing. I’ll be waiting for the reviews, but these look promising.

Dua Avatar

I ordered their eyeshadows and waiting on my shippment .. once I saw their eyeshadows on instagram I couldn’t resist and bought them in a heart beat. I never did this before but the swatches were so tempting and beautiful.

I have my eyes on some highlighters thanks to you LOL.

Bengisu Avatar

Ever After looks like the tone that I searched from EVERY BRAND! I am obsessed with the sheeny part of MAC Natural Vigor mineralize eyeshadow, I have never tried anything that beats it as a highlighter but Ever After looks like a similar color. Will definitely be following this series on here, thank you Christine!

Sarah Avatar

OH MY GOSH so I made a no-buy after I went all out on some post-holiday sales in January but these…these may be worth breaking it. Ever After, Pandora, and Beauty Bombshell look stunning. I discovered Looxi after some reader comments too so I’m hoping they all pay off!

Bonnie Avatar

I’ve seen these on IG! Been really curious about this brand, I can’t wait for your reviews! The swatches look incredible and they seem so multi-use because they’re so pigmented! I love the unique shades!!!

Erin Avatar

I heard abotu these form reader comments. Scared because I do have oily skin and I’m not the fairest person in the world. Also, I have red in my skin. (I find Colourpop’s Swift the most beautiful my-skin-but-better blush.) But gosh, Luna and Pandora? They may be speaking to me.

Shay Avatar

OMGosh!!! I’m SO happy that you are reviewing these GORGEOUS highlighters!! I had my eye on Looxie Beauty since they first opened and I couldn’t make up my mind in which highlighter I wanted so last week I ordered like 4 of them with a few of their shadows. I was bummed bc I had their seeming amazing Auroras eyeshadows in my cart, but again due to my indecisiveness, they were sold out overnight, so I lost those. Which I think you should review next from Looxi!! But I’m so excited that you are doing a review on this great indie company.

Angela Avatar

I love all my Looxi products! They’re gorgeous and many of the colors are like nothing else on the market. Also her customer service is phenomenal. I know we’re going to be seeing a lot more from this brand in the future!

Jackie Avatar

I got 9 of the highlighters and I hate them. They are pigmented but are really dry and crumbly, and don’t last on my skin. She said they’re comparable to becca’s highlighters, no way these don’t hold a candle to becca’s. Also her eyeshadow don’t last on my eyelids even with 24 hour primer, they transfer everywhere and I never had that problem even with $1 eyeshadows. I’m going to stick with makeup geek or morphe.

Meghan Avatar

I actually have a few of these – they are incredible ! The girl who makes them is super sweet. I also have incredibly sensitive skin and have had zero issue with them 🙂

Karen Avatar

I never heard of this brand until one of their products was listed as a dupe for Enigma from Melt. Too bad about the negativity. Bullying is another thing though. Another indie brand is having some struggles come up despite huge sales success on very expensive products 😉 i found the bullying info and held back from purchasing more. This one I won’t bother to look for the brand.

Emmy Avatar

I’m new here, but I was wondering if anyone else had problems with the formula being chunky. I received Luna in both the Highlighter and Kicker form for Christmas, but the highlighter seemed to ball up in the pan and on my face. The kicker was good once I opened the bottle and mixed it myself, but it was liquidy before that. The color was quite lovely, but the consistency was just off.
