Anastasia’s Holiday Collection consists of an eyeshadow palette, two blush palettes, a highlighter palette, liquid lipstick trio, and then three new shades of liquid lipsticks (one was missing from my order, that’s why I only have swatches of two).

First Impressions

I’m not a big fan of the blush formula as many of the shades–especially the darker ones–did not blend out easily, looked patchy, and were particularly dismal over foundation due to how much buffing and blending I had to do (which disturbed my base a ton). There were a few that did apply fine, but when they were bad, they were atrocious. The Sugar Glow kit contains three previously released shades (the new one is Gumdrop), and these are very metallic and/or glittery, so it will not be for everyone.

For those who feared a Subculture repeat in formula, I don’t think there’s anything to fear with Prism. The formula felt more like the brand’s typical eyeshadows, though I found most of the shimmer shades to be dense and a bit drier where application was best with fingertips or a flat, synthetic brush or with a dampened brush. I wish the shimmers were creamier and had a little more slip like ABH’s best shimmer shades (see summer’s release).

The liquid lipsticks seemed to be on par with most recently released shades–smooth, pigmented, easy to apply/spread.

Meh. Thought I’d be tempted by the Prism palette but I’m not. Many of them look patchy and/or dry to me, and not particularly original. I really think I’ve hit a wall when it comes to new releases, and maybe my makeup addiction is finally over. As always, thank you for the sneak peek and great photos.

I feel the exact same way!! I used to be so excited by new releases and now everything just seems lacklustre. Maybe my wallet will thank me ??‍♀️ Haha

“I really think I’ve hit a wall when it comes to new releases, and maybe my makeup addiction is finally over.”

I agree! I was just thinking that this morning. Even the things I am excited about are too expensive to justify the purchase. I seriously think I am set for life!

Thank you Christine for the swatches and the first impressions ! Thb, I’m not impressed or tempted by any of these products. In the case of Prism, the quality might be there but I’m looking at the palette and…there is something missing. It seems like disparate eyeshadows put together without a coherent theme imho.

ABH is a really hit or miss brand for me. Prism looks gorgeous as a whole, but some of those swatches look so sad. The blush palettes look like skips for me. I’ll swatch them in store, but all of those shades have been done before. I have way too many liquid lipsticks to purchase anymore. Plus, glosses have really been calling my name lately. The only thing I know I want without question is the highlighter palette.

Chelle Avatar

But like… so what HAPPENED with the Subculture palette? This would’ve been manufactured at almost the same time as Subculture given that they were only a few months apart. You can’t tell me they changed the formula for one palette and then went back to the other before even launching Subculture. THIS IS ALL SO STRANGE.

Christina Avatar

I read this morning on MakeupAddiction reddit where someone posted side by side comparisons of Modern Renaissance and Prism. Now there is some debate whether the photo had a filter and it only shows 11 of the 14 shades but there were so many close comparisons that people where speculating this was Subculture REDUX 2! Now here I am honestly channeling some serious Mulder and Scully but it is all so strange and very interesting to say the least!

I thought Prism would be like the Urban Decay Vice 4 palette. Nothing about this says Prism to me. Can we have an adult prismatic palette that doesn’t channel ponys? Maybe its just me.

Susan Avatar

I agree. If the looser, powdery shadows of Subculture were intentional, they why didn’t they stick with that “superior” formula for Prism? Their inability to admit they made a mistake with Subculture has seriously soured me on the brand.

Tara Avatar

The new liquid lipstick shades look like they apply beautifully, but I’m just unimpressed by the color selection. Everyone is doing these vampy, deep shades this fall, and Anastasia already has a lot of them in its existing collection. I’d like to see them do more light and medium shades, especially since most of their existing lighter shades don’t apply that well.

Beth Avatar

Someone on another site posted a side-by-side swatch comparison of Prism and Subculture, and the similarity between the two is rather disappointing. It’s almost like ABH duped their own product. I hope those lipsticks are worthwhile, though, because a few of them are calling my name.

Brian Avatar

Just goes to show that swatches don’t always accurately represent how well a shadow might work on the eye because obsidian worked pretty well for her in that one look. Looking at these swatches I’m even more impressed by Sam’s skill because she made every shade she used work really well for the looks she did.

its interesting that after the controversy over the formula, ABH and nirvana went so hard that the formula was perfect, it was pure pigment, it was intentional, etc… but then for this new palette they seemed to have gone back to regular eyeshadow formula. on top of it, many of the colors in prism are similar to subculture. not complete dupes, but for a regular makeup wearer i don’t know if its necessary to have 2 palettes with a neon yellow, orange, grungy green, etc. It almost seems like this palette is a do-over

CeeBee Avatar

I really like Breeze and Terrace from the Radiant blush quad and the Trouble liquid lip looks lovely but I probably have about elebenty squillion dupes for that one already…

I think I am going to get Prism. I was very, very late the the Mod Ren craze because that many mattes in a single palette was way outside my comfort zone and I was still surprised at how much I loved it. Subculture didn’t interest me at all, so I missed that trainwreck but Prism is seriously tempting to me… I agree the shade selection is not going to be to everyone’s taste (I’m not even sure it’s completely mine, TBH) but I’m sure I can find someway to make it work. I don’t usually go for dark shades at all, but Osiris and Throne are intriguing me.

Mariella Avatar

Oh heckle and jeckle, I was sure I didn’t have any interest in the palette and then I looked at the eye look you did, Christine – the green and gold/copper one – and I thought “I have to have it”. Eden, Sphere and Saturn are so much colours I do not like and would never wear but you have done it again – so much for having any willpower when you do stuff like this. I’m also glad to read that the formula for these is back to the ABH standard. Dazed would be a great lip colour except that I don’t like matte lipsticks and the drier feel of liquid matte lipsticks.

Genevieve Avatar

Thank goodness this palette is better than the dismal failure of the Subculture one. A few patchy shades (why a matte black?) and some lovely colours like Throne. The liquid lippies look good too.
Thank you for the sneak peak Christine and your first impressions.

Shawne Avatar

I’m almost positive I’m getting Prism, just waiting for it to come to the stores so I can swatch it! If I don’t love it, I’m sure I can return it.

Mariah Avatar

This is disappointing, and not because this Anastasia made a better palette, I’m glad their back up to their usual quality. I’m disappointed this came out SO FAST after Subculture and how much I spent on that only to be disappointed. I feel like they pushed this out, maybe faster than usual, to make sure everyone knew they were still good, and this looks like all I wanted Subculture to be, but now I can’t afford it.

Miska Avatar

The only thing that interested me in this release was the Prism palette. Looks better than the SC palette but I’m on the fence. Not up to par with the MR palette. Ugh, why did they veer away from the original formula? And like others said…what happened?! I’d have to swatch this one in person on my person to really be sold. It must be repeated again Christine, your eye looks are stunning. Thanks for getting those swatches up so quickly. Lol you’re like a makeup ninja! Amazing how many items you swatch/review. Stellar work:-)

Maggie Avatar

After checking the ingredients list, it looks like they took out cyclomethicone and cyclopentasiloxane–two ingredients that help create that silky slippery texture. This is actually good news for me bc I’m allergic to these kinds of ingredients–this might be my first ABH palette ever.

AB Avatar

This palette is not for me — I don’t think the colors will work though I will swatch them — but I am glad to see ABH back on track quality-wise.

Aj Avatar

The Gradient blush palette is making me happy, and I have my eye on the eye shadow palette too. I sure hope Eden applies better on the eyes than how the swatch it showing up, same with Dimension.
Can’t wait to see your reviews!

Morgan Gilders Avatar

One of the things I find so strange about ABH highlighting palettes is that they swatch/apply lighter than they look in pan. When I first saw pictures of this one, I was convinced that this was another release that would be too dark for my paper coloured skin. This palette looks like I might be able to use it though!

jel888 Avatar

What a sneak peak! That’s a lot of work, thanks! I’ll wait for the palette’s rating still, because I REALLY wanted Subculture and still haven’t gotten it because I can’t test it in store here yet and trust your ratings in light of the Huda palette disappoint.
