Smashbox Day Rate Photo Edit Eye Shadow Trio Review, Photos, Swatches
Day Rate
Smashbox Day Rate Photo Edit Eye Shadow Trio ($22.00 for 0.11 oz.) contains a gold, dirty gold, and blackened teal. All three shades were shimmery, and as has been the case with Smashbox’s new trios, it ended up being a mixed bag of so-so eyeshadows.

Roll Deep
Roll Deep is a deep teal with warm, brown undertones and a blue-to-green shifting pearl. The eyeshadow had semi-opaque pigmentation, but it went on significantly darker and had less of a shimmery finish compared to how it appeared in the pan. The texture was a bit firmer in the pan and had a tendency to look drier along the edges as I tried to blend it out. This shade started to fade on me after seven and a half hours of wear.

Formula Overview
-
The formula is supposed to be "super-blendable" and "richly-pigmented." I found the quality to vary a lot from shade to shade, even with a trio, as some shades had soft, blendable texture and others were drier, dusty, and messy to work with and had pigmentation that sheered out or faded quickly. I wanted to like them more than I ended up after using them on the lid as I routinely felt like the brighter shades never looked quite as vibrant in practice as they did in the pan. Most of the shades were blendable and had coverage from medium to opaque with a few being sheer. They lasted anywhere from five to eight hours on me.

Gold Hoops
Gold Hoops is a light gold with warm, yellow undertones and a metallic sheen. It had opaque pigmentation with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that wasn’t too soft or too firm in the pan. The eyeshadow applied well to bare skin and wore well for seven and a half hours on me.

Dime Piece
Dime Piece is a dirty, medium-dark gold with warm, olive undertones and a pearl finish. It had good pigmentation with a soft, moderately dusty consistency that was drier than ideal for an eyeshadow. It benefited greatly from having a primer underneath for better, more even coverage and longer wear. On its own, it had a tendency to look faded on the lid (relative to pan color) and lasted for a mere six and a half hours.

This could have been a fantastic little trio of shades – love the colours, but unfortunately the average quality has let it down. Beautiful eye look Christine.
Than you, Genevieve!
Genevieve – that’s always the problem! Christine does such beautiful eye looks that it’s hard to believe the products can really be “all that bad” – she makes the most poorly performing of products look fantastic.
I’ve been so eager to see your review for this one, (as you no doubt knew, Christine, as I’ve been banging on about it). I was hoping Dime Piece would get a better rating because I’m such a total sucker for shades like that (ditto “Hold My Gold” from Showmance). Mind you, this isn’t even available in Canada for some strange reason (maybe it’s coming later) but if it does, I’ll be so conflicted! Of course, the look you did with it just makes me want it all the more (I just came in the door with Night Shoot in my happy little hand!)
I really don’t think it’s worth buying!
Keep telling me that, Christine! Although it would be a lot easier if the looks you did reflected the poor quality, but they NEVER do – your eye looks ALWAYS make me want even really crummy products. If you weren’t so terrific, I’d almost want to accuse you of “false advertising” 😉 As an aside, I wrote down the URL for this site for one of the cosmetics ladies at Shoppers Drug Mart….I was telling her about your site as I was purchasing my Smashbox trio (Night Shoot) yesterday and how your blog isn’t one of those gushy “ooooh, I looooove this” blogs but rather a really professional reviewing site with clear-cut criteria, etc. She whipped out a little booklet she keeps in her pocket and asked me to write down the name of the site as she’d find it very valuable in her work to have more information about the products they sell.
Not 100% good. And for a trio, that’s pretty awful. Eh, that’s okay, I have my faithful Chanel Empriente du Desert!
I wish it was better!
Every time I see that name, my heart gives a little lurch. I love that quad so much. The Chanel counter near me has vanished….folded in the night without much of a trace (well, the empty counter is still there, waiting to be dismantled). I am so sad that purchasing Chanel will now entail a lengthy car ride on the highway (something that terrifies me).
Oh no! Well, that wasn’t very nice of them, Mariella! It also seems so strange of them to do, whether the store or Chanel themselves decided to pull the brand from that store.
I’m sure it was linked to sales. They still have the fragrances but they’re sold at the perfume counter as they always were in past. The makeup counter was separate (I think if they’d been together, sales would have been much higher but I guess it all depends on the types of agreements the stores strike with the companies). So now, poor me…I’ll have to either learn to brave highway traffic or wheedle and beg hubby – who foolishly thinks I have way more makeup than anyone could ever need (and actually that was a though I shared the other night when I was trying to find where the heck to store some new acquisitions) – to drive me!
I like the color selection, I’ll have to try it out with some shadows I already own.
