Sephora Contour Matte Gel Eyeliners Reviews, Photos, Swatches
Sephora Contour Matte Gel Eyeliner
Sephora Contour Matte Gel Eyeliner ($14.00 for 0.0176 oz.) is supposed to be a “long-wearing, smudge-proof gel” pencil available in ten “intensely pigmented matte shades.” It’s a twist-up pencil, so you’ll notice that they contain less product than the Contour Eye Pencils (which require sharpening). All five shades I tested were mostly matte, semi-opaque to fully opaque in pigmentation, and long-wearing. The texture varies between very lightly creamy (just enough not to tug) and lightly creamy, but they’re not slippery or wet at all. Wear time varies from eight to ten hours with light thinning overall but no smudging or migration. When I wore them in the shower, they seemed fairly waterproof! I prefer the regular Contour Eyeliners a bit more, as I get longer wear and they’re a little creamier (but not slippery), though these are nice, particularly for some of the more unique shades in the range.
Sephora All Black Everything Contour Matte Gel Eyeliner ($14.00 for 0.0176 oz.) is described as a “matte black.” It’s a medium black with a mostly matte finish. It was slightly drier than other shades I tried, and it had semi-opaque coverage in a single stroke. It was buildable to opaque coverage in two layers and lasted for nine hours on me. Guerlain Noir Volcanique (01) (P, $37.00) is darker. Urban Decay Perversion (LE, $19.00) is darker, glossier. MAC Graphblack (P, $16.00) is darker. MAC Smolder (P, $16.00) is darker. Estee Lauder Blackened Black (LE, $20.00) is darker, less glossy. bareMinerals Midnight (LE, $15.00) is warmer. MAC Blacktrack (P, $16.00) is darker. Kat Von D Puro Amor (P, $10.00) is warmer. Make Up For Ever M10 Matte Black (P, ) is cooler. Hourglass Obsidian (P, $16.00) is darker. Ardency Inn Black (P, $19.00) is darker. Tarina Tarantino Tommy Jet (P, $15.00) is darker, warmer. Urban Decay Black Velvet (P, $20.00) is darker, less glossy. Buxom Call Me (P, $17.00) is darker, glossier. MAC Definitely Black (P, $20.00) is darker. First 15 dupes listed, see more:

Sephora Beautiful Monster Contour Matte Gel Eyeliner ($14.00 for 0.0176 oz.) is described as a “matte lime green.” It’s a brightened, yellowed chartreuse with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It is lightly creamy, so it glides on well without tugging and deposits good pigmentation in a single pass. It wore well for nine hours on me. MAC Colour Matters (LE, $16.00) is darker, more muted. MAC Sourpuss (P, $16.00) is darker, more muted. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Sephora On Wednesdays We Wear Pink Contour Matte Gel Eyeliner ($14.00 for 0.0176 oz.) is described as a “matte pink.” It’s a brightened, magenta pink with cool undertones and a matte finish. It had mostly opaque color payoff in one stroke (which is always impressive) and was just creamy enough to apply without tugging but stayed in place well for ten hours on me. No dupes for this one from my stash that I can recall!
Sephora Sea If I Care Contour Matte Gel Eyeliner ($14.00 for 0.0176 oz.) is described as a “matte blue.” It’s a brightened, medium-dark cobalt blue with a semi-matte finish. It had so-so pigmentation in one stroke and was buildable to mostly opaque coverage in two layers. This was slightly less creamy compared to other shades (but creamier than the black shade) but didn’t tug. It wore well for almost nine and a half hours on me. Ardency Inn Dark Blue (P, $19.00) is darker, more muted. MAC Royal Wink (LE, $16.00) is more shimmery. NARS Most Wanted (LE, $24.00) is lighter, more muted. L’Oreal Cobalt Blue (250) (P, $8.99) is darker. See comparison swatches / compare dupes side-by-side.
Sephora Sly Like a Fox Contour Matte Gel Eyeliner ($14.00 for 0.0176 oz.) is described as a “matte terra cotta.” It’s a muted, medium-dark copper with hints of red and a mostly matte finish. It had nice pigmentation in a single pass, and the texture was lightly creamy for smooth, even application and didn’t tug on the lash line. On me, the color wore well for nine and a half hours before thinning. MAC Basic Red (P, $16.00) is darker, brighter. Illamasqua Feisty (P, $20.00) is darker. OMG Fox is amazing!
It’s really unique!
these look interesting, would love to see how to use them in eye looks, especially the colorful ones!
I used them in the past few palette reviews!
Yay! I’m so glad these got good grades, especially OWWWP and Sly Like a Fox. I like Beautiful Monster quite a bit, too.
They are pretty good!
Oooh these look good! On the list with ’em!
Woohoo!
Yeah I am totally buying all of these.
FUN!!
Oh wow, great job, Sephora! This just might be the best colorful matte pencil liner release I have seen. I kind of wonder if they can be used as lip liners, but it’s probably not a good idea.
I like how they twist-up!
Beautiful monster and sly like a fox are so cool! Glad these are so good for the price point.
Sly Like a Fox is such a cool shade!
I’m impressed with these both because there’s really nothing else like them! At least not anything good, so it’s great to see Sephora filling a gap in the industry.
These look great! It’s so awesome to see all the Temptalia recommends lately!
They seem promising!
These fall releases are killing me! I’m trying not to buy everything but now I have to stop at Sephora on the way home from work and pick up the pink one, KVD bow n arrow, and check out the fox color. So many unique colors with high ratings, I’m so excited!
Gotta love a unique shade ;D
Bought OWWWP and Bow N Arrow, decided to save Sly for the next 20% off sale but I bet I give in earlier.
Oh, I need to try these ASAP! A matte gel eyeliner ? Sounds like it can hold up on my oily lids and wet waterline. I’m eyeing Sea If I Care. Are you going to review any more shades?
Sorry, this is all I bought!
After watching you wear My boyfriend Jeans pencil I brought and love it. Just picked Sephora’s colorful shadow & liner in My boyfriends jeans. Last week I also brought the Fairytale contour pencil , it seems soft and skips and so not too impressed. I’ll check colors out on my next Sephora trip.
My Boyfriend’s Jeans is such a good one!
I got Sly Like A Fox, Navy Baby, and Steel-ing Hearts. I like all of them. Oddly, Navy Baby has slightly different packaging.
Interesting that Navy Baby’s packaging is different!
I’m so happy you reviewed these! It feels like Canadian Sephora’s (both the stores and online now) take forever to get new products in. I was hoping the quality would be there because the shades and names are too great to pass up! Sephora Collection really knows how to make a great pencil-style liner. 🙂
Hopefully they get them in soon!
THOSE NAMES
Good or bad?
lol lot of odd names with the makeup world, did u see the ” vivacious vaccum cleaner bag ” mac eyeshadow ? that one will always stick in my mind now ! crazy lol
These look great! Perfect for Spring & Summer, too bad that’s already passed though. Particularly loving the pink and yellow, that would be such a great combination!
They’re really fun shades!
Wow, some of these are so gorgeous!! I’d love to see a look using Sly Like a Fox.
I used it last week! 🙂
While these shades are not necessarily my cup of tea, I’m very happy to see eyeliner pencils in new and interesting colors with good reviews!
Agreed! A unique shade is always appreciated!
Sly Like A Fox looks right up my alley. It seems really well done!
It is!
I love the colors for the ones you recommended! I also really like the names that they picked out for this range. “Sea if I Care” hahaha.
LOL! ;D
I really like this formula, I have On Wednesdays We Wear Pink and Sea If I Care and love both of them! They actually last, which is unheard of for me as I have super oily lids and the pink is such a great color. I may get the lime green, too.
Nice!! 🙂 Happy to hear they’re wearing well for you!
You had me at “twist up”… but then lost me at “doesn’t last as long”. I’ll stick with my regular contour liners, which are HG for me.
Bummer!
Are these going to be released internationally?
They are just gorgeous!
No idea!
Very nice.
They are!
Very interesting colors!
Definitely!
Very bright and bold summery colours. For those who are adventurous these are the right shades for you. Personally I prefer the colours in their other pencils, but I can see how these would appeal to others.
They have some more basic shades, too!
So glad to see these are getting good reviews!!
😀
Super stoked that the most unique shades got your recommendation!!!! Can’t wait to add those two beauties to my stash! And maybe also Beautiful Monster! The ONLY thing I dont love about these is the price hike. That is lame, Sephora! Is it me or is “Sephora” branded makeup getting more and more expensive these days?
I’m not sure if it’s because these twist-up (though you get less product with twist-ups, but you may argue you lose the same amount by sharpening… not sure).
How does sea if I care compare to Urban Decay’s chaos? It seems incredibly similar to me looking at pictures. I have chaos and I am wondering if I need Sea If I Care.
Here you go, Lauren!

Sly Like A Fox and Beautiful Monster are so interesting and unique! I really like these 2 quite a lot! I wish that shades such as Sea If I Care looked good on me, but cobalt is my kryptonite. Unfortunately. ?
Oh nooo! 🙁
so pretty ! i usually wear just plain ole black maybe blue or purple once in awhile, would these work or be safe for your waterline ?
I’m not sure if these are safe for the waterline!
i may have to get me a couple anyhow & blend underneath my lashes 😀 these are so pretty ! 🙂 p.s. i love love love your blogs/reveiws you have made my decisions easier on what or what not to purchase !! keep up the awesome work 🙂
Sly Like a Fox is very unique!
It is!
These are definitely new favourites for me. I might even stock up at the next VIB sale, they’re that good!
Wow!! 🙂 Which shades do you have so far?
I have Beautiful Monster, OWWWP, and Sly Like a Fox. They’re great for summer!
Oh my, I need all of these! <3
They’re fun!
Ooh! Sephora did right. There is definitely a market for crazier colors – especially for them to be more accessible. Love it.
Same here 😀
These were sitting in my cart for the longest (since you first mentioned the release, I think) but I kept going back and forth. Should have picked up Fox. I had a feeling it would be fantastic and it so is, judging by the swatches. I’ll have to wait a couple of weeks until I can order from Sephora again, lol. 🙂
Always next time 🙂
I would love to have Sly like a Fox – but as a lip colour! Its such a pretty shade!
It is! And so unusual.
