Round-up: MAC Extra Dimension Eyeshadows (2015) Overview & Thoughts

MAC Extra Dimension Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.04 oz.) is going to be a permanent formula with eighteen shades to choose from (I reviewed seventeen of them). All of the shades have been released previously as limited edition offerings. The collection has been postponed to May 14th. They’re a wet/dry formula that ranges from semi-sheer to semi-opaque color dry and mostly opaque to opaque color damp. I get slightly longer wear when I apply the eyeshadows damp, but the wear ranges from six to eight hours.

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! Thank you for understanding!

Oh, and since we’re on this, can you tell me which filters I can use on the swatch gallery to see all the extra dimension swatches for MAC? I know your link will land on that page but for future reference, can you tell me what are the filters used for that? Thanks a million!

Caroline Avatar

Thanks for the info! I was trying to do these before you posted the round-up and wasn’t successful… But thanks again! Your website is truly the ultimate reference on products for me. 🙂

Oooh – don’t get me started! I love these Extra Dimension shadows for the colours and finish but in terms of texture, nothing beats Mega Metals. In fact, I think I’ll get out Dalliance and Centre Stage to wear tomorrow (I’ve not used either of them in quite some time, which is a shame).

Carrie Avatar

Man, I wish they’d release the Mega Metals and add some cool tone shades to the line up!

Still, it’s good to hear that they managed to refine the formula somewhat 🙂 I do wish the price point was a little lower though, given that they’re slightly smaller than average pans!

Hey Christine! Love your reviews!! Just wondering if these are able to be depotted? And are they the size of the regular mac eyeshadows? Could I put them into my pro palette? Thank you 🙂

Rich Core is missing from the swatches link by the way 🙂

I also am unable to sort these by undertone – when I do so, it shows me the whole swatch gallery instead of just these shades. I’m on Google Chrome on a PC 🙂

I already had Sweet Heat,Rich Core and Havana,so that leave Silver Dawn and Legendary Lure for me to get from dimension shadows but it’s permanent so don’t have to rush 😉 I really love this round up page you made,Chritine!

Christine I posted this question on the first post but it is probably easier for you here. You say there was a slight change with this group. I noticed Fathom Deep was one of your favorites of the year. Does this rendition of FD still get your praise?

Christine Avatar

I already replied to this comment – please check! But to recap: I noted on the specific shade if I noticed any differences; I do not think there was a massive reformulation by any means – only that I think the very original releases have a finer texture now, e.g. they are being manufactured more similarly to the last release than the first release. I didn’t notice any differences with Fathoms Deep, and I believe it received the same grade as before.

I’m so sorry to hear that, IDK how you can work on the blog at all! I know how driven you are, and you’re worried about getting behind, but you need to take care of yourself and get rest so your body can heal, we all understand. Please don’t push yourself too much!

Christine Avatar

Some things have to get done 🙂 I took care of what I needed to on Sunday (got posts written up for Monday, answered some comments) but tried to wait until mid-day to work on it and then after I was done with the bare minimum, and then tried to rest! I honestly feel a LOT better moving around and focusing on something than just laying in bed! I don’t know if it’s just me or not, but I truly find that it’s rare that I need full-on bed rest, lol!

I compared your swatches for old and new Stylishly Merry and I’m pretty disappointed, it doesn’t even look like the same eyeshadow, the new one looks like it has almost an orangish tint to it and it much more sheer, where the old one was a very pretty pinky violet kind of color and much more pigmented. I hope this is just a difference in your lighting or camera.

Christine Avatar

Hey Sparkle,

The version I had from Glamour Daze is warm-toned with a distinct orange undertone to it. I’m looking at the swatches side-by-side, and I only see a minor difference (attributable to different lighting/angle based on how the shimmer is catching/reflecting the light), but the tone and color appear the same to me. This version seems a bit sheerer dry, though it’s actually supposed to be that way (they aren’t supposed to be opaque dry).

Thanks for the reply…it’s good to know that the color is still the same, I’ve been obsessed with this eyeshadow since it was first released.

Hi Christine,
I love your website. Your coverage is so thorough and complete. I have read your reviews of both the Nars Duals Intensity Eyeshadows and the MAC Extra Dimension Eyeshadows, but can’t make up my mind as to which to get. I think I like the MAC Colors better, but am still undecided. So, in the final analysis, which do you prefer? Which one wins in the final smack down? What do I do? Help me!!!!

Christine Avatar

They’re really, really comparable. NARS is ever-so-slightly smoother in texture to the touch, but I don’t notice it as much on the eye, you know? MAC is cheaper, and if you like the colors of MAC better, win win 🙂 NARS’ shades may have a bit less shimmer, too, compared to MAC, so that might be a factor.

Rochelle R Avatar

Thank you so much. That was really helpful. I think the fact that Nars has less shimmer, may be the deciding factor and pull me to that brand. You’re terrific!

I just chatted with a MAC representative online and he said the release for this collection in the US was postponed to early July (he didn’t have a specific date) and internationally, it would release shortly after. He didn’t know the reason though.

Excuse me while I go broke on these!! Gorgeous!! I’m usually more of a UD fan though I have some staple MAC colors I won’t be wjthout. But these look amazing!! Seems by the grades that the shadows did better than the lip colors, so this is where my pay check will go! As always, thanks!! Always look here first before buying!!
