Nearly Mauve

Rare Beauty Nearly Mauve Stay Vulnerable Liquid Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.1 oz.) is a medium-dark coral with moderate, warm undertones and barely-there gold pearl strewn through a more matte finish. The shimmer was very subtle in person, so those who aren’t into shimmer probably wouldn’t have an issue with it here (it’s just that subtle!).

The texture was lightweight, airy, and like a whipped mousse, which made it easy to apply and spread over the skin, though it was naturally inclined to sheer out as well so getting opaque results takes more building in theory (or else not blending at all). The formula is designed to be sheerer and buildable, so it performed in line with how it was marketed.

For me, the downside was that, despite being marketed as buildable, I found longevity worsened at more than medium coverage; it was quick to crease within four to five hours at higher levels of coverage but lasted for seven hours before creasing as a sheer wash of product–though not that long-wearing either way. I was surprised since the formula dried down pretty quickly–work one eye at a time!–and seemed fairly budge/transfer-resistant by touch alone.

Formula Overview

$20.00/0.1 oz. - $200.00 Per Ounce

The formula is supposed to go from "liquid-to-powder" to "build" and "blend" with "no creasing, smudging, fading, [or] transferring" to "last all day." The marketing headline is "a wash of color that lasts." The coverage seemed more opaque when initially applied, but in practice, it is more of a medium, buildable coverage product that can easily be applied sheer--and the formula is best-performing when worn sheer to medium in coverage.

When I wore it as more opaque coverage, I got creasing within six hours of wear, but when I sheered it out as more of a wash of color, they lasted seven to eight hours before creasing a bit.

The texture felt more like a whipped mousse--airy, lightweight, and spreadable without being too watery or thin--and blended out readily with a synthetic, fluffy brush or a fingertip. I found they were quick to dry down, which made me prefer a brush for a really diffused application of color as a fingertip seemed to make it dry down faster.

Nearly Neutral

Rare Beauty Nearly Neutral Stay Vulnerable Liquid Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.1 oz.) is a muted, coppery-brown with warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. It had semi-sheer to medium coverage in practice, though it could be built up to full coverage with two to three layers or if applied directly with the applicator and not really blended out along the edges.

The whipped, airier mousse texture made it easy to spread and blend out for a sheerer effect, which was intended by the brand, so I think it hit the mark there. Where it doesn’t is that it is supposed to be buildable with layers of a product, but I found that wearing two layers or even one but at higher coverage (like semi-opaque and not really blended out) resulted in creasing by five hours. If I kept it to a sheerer wash of color, it lasted closer to seven and a half hours before creasing. I was surprised as it was quick to dry down and felt more powder-like with some flexibility.

Nearly Rose

Rare Beauty Nearly Rose Stay Vulnerable Liquid Eyeshadow ($20.00 for 0.1 oz.) is a brighter, medium pink with moderate, warm undertones and a semi-matte finish. The texture felt lightweight, airy, and mousse-like, so it had a whipped quality to it that helped it spread readily across my skin while still having some substance to it so it didn’t sheer out to nothing immediately.

It did, however, lend itself to more semi-sheer to medium coverage as blending and diffusing the product was more inclined to sheer it out than to build it up (you’d want to let the first layer dry before building coverage up with a second layer) — this was as designed and marketed by the brand, but initial swatching (using the applicator) ended up being rather different than actual application on the lid so I wanted to make that clear!

It had buildable coverage from sheer to semi-sheer to medium, though I found going beyond medium or using more than one layer drastically reduced longevity from seven hours before creasing to five hours before creasing.

I love blush and lip tones on the eyes, it looks so romantic. I’ll do monochromatic looks using Sydney Grace blushes on both the cheeks and eyelids. Like hello, ephemeral turn-of-the-century tin packaging. These seem superior to the Glossier matte liquid shadows (from what little I’ve seen), though the creasing would be an issue.
