Rant & Rave: NYX

Tell us what you love and hate about...

NYX

I like that NYX has a really robust catalog of shades, which makes them more inclusive across the entire brand, not just complexion, and they’ve been like that for a long time. The older I get, the more important I see accessibility being. Because they have so many products, and they do seem to release and discontinue formulas somewhat regularly, it can be hard to keep up, though.

We appreciate enthusiasm for new releases but ask readers to please hold questions regarding if/when a review will be posted as we can't commit to or guarantee product reviews. We don't want to set expectations and then disappoint readers as even products that are swatched don't always end up being reviewed due to time constraints and changes in priorities! I like that they became more accessible in my country since L’Oreal acquired them and that they keep giving us mostly good, affordable lippies in every colour and finish imaginable! It can be hard to find your shade based on their website alone, but I am really excited that they did a collab with Alyssa Ashley!

She’s great. I’m far too old to follow/trust influencers, but I often will say, ‘Wonder if Alyssa Ashley has anything to say about X?’ and google that possibility. Also have recommended that night customers check her out, when she seems relevant to what they mention. My intro to her was looking for reviews on Subculture. She sure calls it as she sees it.

I think their products are priced right, generally great quality, packaging is usually awesome but….. there’s too much going on. Espically with their lip lines. I feel like they have all these half complete lines, looking at the display I get overwhelmed with the lip products.

I also think they’re a great brand for the price and tend to be pretty good quality. If I were much more into makeup as a teen, I probably would buy a lot more. I like that they can be bought at Ulta etc. But I too feel that there’s just too many products and too much going on to present a clear message or for the customer to know where to start. Also, I was interested in their recent Elements palettes but the price jack-up to around $30 seemed a little high for their market.

I like all the different types of products, especially weird stuff that you can’t get anywhere else, like Metallic Eyebrow Gel or the Puff Pout lipsticks. But their lipstick colors always look a little off and cheap, and there are whole ranges that don’t include a single color that flatters me.

I really like their brushes. I think they are one of the better bunch you can buy at the drugstore for sure. I introduced the foundation brush Jackie Aina uses to my friend and she is really satisfied with that purchase. I’m proud hahaha.
Their other products I can’t really speak of because I prefer high end products, but I know their microbrow pencil in black is great and matches my cool toned brow hairs.

Love the soft matte lip creams! The matte lippies and butter glosses are also fantastic but I struggle with their eyeshadows. Haven’t found a blush I love, but some of the highlighters are awesome…

I like how they’re priced, though some products have crept up in cost, especially if the sizes are smaller than standard (like some foundations and liquid shimmers) and they are very accessible. I wish New Zealand had access to the entire range, but alas, we don’t and NYX don’t ship internationally.

As I came out of a solid 15 years or so of makeup doldrums, Nyx was the brand that brought me back to feeling color again. They literally had the most innovative eyeshadow shades in all of the DS/LE world at that time! And I was game. From there, they have continued to bring excellence to the DS/LE market. Including the most expansive foundation shade range at that price point, and out doing most ME, HE and Luxury End brands, too.

Unfortunately, Nyx has been slowly, but steadily, going into the more ME market. The prices are creeping up. Also, I’m sad to see their older pillow square blushes and eyeshadows DC’d. The trios and 5-pan Caribbean palettes, too. I still have all of mine!

Rave: A great range of products and they are very reasonably priced for the quality. Cruelty free too.

Rant: Please send all of your products to Australia! Not just a select few.

I thought of you today Genevieve as I was browsing at TJ Max and Nyx has an eyebrow kit for redheads and I swear I thought of you right then! I almost purchased myself but am holding back on a no buy at least until Christmas if I can help it. But I have a small package arriving on Thursday. 🙂
Talk about Nyx I have a few of the palettes which included the Warm Neutrals (I bought after drooling for the Naked Heat but didn’t want to spend that much $$$ fue added ligh/highliter colors ir the darkest ones) I like those a lot! But the Elements I have a few also and didn’t find the quality as smooth as the first set I got is sort of gritty not buttery smooth.

RAVES: I think overall they have great products at great price points (some of their palettes being big exceptions). I especially love their lip products. They’ve got a great variety. I LOVE that they offer lots of alternative shades, and I think they’re the best drug-store option for such. I’m not allergic to their mascaras, and I like Worth the Hype and the Color Mascaras. Their website customer service is really good.

RANTS: Some of their palettes are getting into the $20-$30 range, which is rather high for DS. I think their eyeshadow quality is inconsistent, especially with the singles. They have too many lip color product lines going. I think a few of those could be merged. Studio Perfect Primer in Green is awful (but luckily the CC cream in green works under my foundation). Their stock is always picked over in the stores and popular items can be hard to get, even online.

I wish they had a better selection of single pan eye shadows. I’m tired of nothing but palettes from every.body. NYX used to have so many colors. Every time I wanted to try out a new look, they were my go-to for an affordable way to see whether something looked good on me or not. I was a loyal NYX customer from way back too long ago to admit.
Lately they are bringing out new lip colors too fast, getting rid of the old ones so that if there’s something I really like, I can’t find it any more. They must be taking a cue from MAC – 100 new LE collections every year. I’d like it if they were a little more stable and didn’t have such a high product rotation.
Most missed are the single pan eye shadows in a huge range of colors.

Rave: I like a lot of their products and they’re a good price. The few times I’ve been to one of their in-person stores, the employees have been really nice and helpful.

Rant: Two words: decision paralysis!

I still need to discover the brand. I have one product – their Highlight & Contour Pro Palette – and I have to say that it’s gorgeous, affordable and it beats other similar product way more expensive.

Really like that they have improved their products in the concealer, primer areas. Ultimate NYX products are the Halo/Chrome etc lines!!! Butter Gloss Cookie is one of my favorite nudes!

Do not like their foundation (haven’t tried the latest one yet though because we don’t have it yet) and most of their other facial products. Do not like, at all the Whipped Cream cleanser/makeup remover, yuck on the texture (feels more like marshmallow than whipped cream LOL).

Coming from the age bracket in which DS level stuff was decidedly not competitive with HE, I’m a relative newbie to the NYX game. They are pretty innovative, and a great way to try things outside your comfort zone. Some of their core products, like the matte l/s are absolute classics. The old blushes that Nancy T mentions are top shelf, too, (and scoring them at $2 d/c price when they perform that well is unreal.) Rachel’s comments are on the $. I’ve only done one dedicated website order: well packed and presented, almost like a DS Beautylish. Their sale prices are unbeatable. Cons: IRL, such limited selections at various retail outlets that they look very boring…who finds good Nyx at Target, the Rack, Walgreens, unless you are looking for a total basic? The lipstick game is overwhelming. A new formula that is not clearly differentiated from the older ones (except by marketing hype) comes out every other minute. Not annoyed by the price up-creep, think they are worth it, at the HE of DS, as they slink into the mid-end. But a 50$ eye palette from Nyx makes zero sense. Even if they are great, they cannot compete with the mid to high end palettes in that price range. That goes against the general makeup consumer mindset. With so much new product release, there winds up being lots of d/c. (Duh.) So, unless it is a perm product you love, you will be unlikely to be able to repurchase, when the time comes.

I love NYX. I really like how they have a wide range of products with overall good formulas; however, most of their stuff fades on me faster compared to other high-end brands. I don’t mind much since I usually wear their products for a casual makeup look i.e. brows (their brow pencil is amazing), lipstick, and matte eyeshadow. I was fortunate to get a mini palette from Ulta for my birthday reward, and although it is not the most amazing palette it strongly reminds me of my most favorite palette, the ABH X Mario palette.

Some nice colored mascaras (bright, if you’re into that). A too-large range of lip products, but some really niche choices in there. I’ve never used any of their eyeshadows, blushes, or base products (except for their banana powder which is *almost* light enough for me). I like their price point, and they seem to have generally good products for the price point. I also like that they have a fun “Face Awards.” 🙂
