Rant & Rave: Metallic Lipstick

Tell us what you love and hate about...

Metallic Lipstick

LOVE! I love a good shimmery lipstick, whether it’s finer pearl or larger glitter. I am just so dazzled by sparkle, haha! The downsides of metallic lipsticks are when they emphasize lip texture too much or feel too dry/gritty going on.

I love looking at metallic lipsticks in the tube, but I never like them in real life. The color always feels either WAY too light or WAY too dark. It might be because I’m very fair but have large, quite pigmented lips so it’s a tough balance? But I keep buying them and gazing at them.

Even though I usually choose a non-metallic lipstick, I also wear a shimmer or more metallic lipstick probably 1-3 or 1-4. They just look so gorgeous! When they done properly by a brand.

And there chimes in my “rant”. There are some metallic or frosted lipstick formulas that give my lips that crunchy, parched look that I find disgusting looking. I’ve even had that happen with a few higher rated lipstick formulas!

Rave: I love anything glittery, shiny or shimmery. I don’t mind the feeling of glitter on my lips as long as it isn’t too large. I always wear a lip pencil underneath to maintain some colour if the glitter is not too well adhered to the base shade.

Rant: I really hate how some shimmery lipsticks wear off and leave only the glitter behind and no base shade. It looks like a childs craft project where there are splotches of glitter and then bare lip.

Ditto, can’t say it any better Christine! Exactly what I like most and don’t like most about metallic lippies. First I say, “Oooooo discos is alive an well!!!” then I think, “Oh my, makes my lips look old.”

100% what you said Christine. I love metallic red in particular because it feels so festive but have yet to find a good dupe for OCC’s Super NSFW (my favorite) – if you or anyone else who sees this comment knows of one I’d really appreciate it. 🙂 <3

RAVES: I love metallic lipsticks! I love the depth and the shine. I think they’re really beautiful, and such a nice change of pace from all the mattes that have been the rage the last several years.

RANTS: It’s annoying when they’re not as metallic as they look in the tube. Many are really dry feeling, for some reason. I’m not a fan of lots of gritty-feeling glitter, but I can tolerate some texture.

I’m finding the PMG Blitztrance lipsticks very moisturizing, not too glitzy but they give my lips almost a 3D depth effect. They don’t emphasize the lines in my lips at all. I haven’t tried the red yet, that’s for tomorrow, looking forward to that! I’m liking them very much.

Not so much love or hate about the category in general, just a strong preference for more subtle metallics, meaning no glitter or sparkles, just a homogeneous light-reflecting finish like brushed metal — the only products I’ve seen do that semi-successfully are mattes and liquid mattes. IMO, as soon as you add a glossy effect, the metallic appearance is overridden.

Rave: the shine seems to make my smallish lips look bigger, the way any shiny or light color will do, only more so. Pretty in the package. I like the sometime duochrome effect. If it’s a good formula, echoing everyone else, won’t emphasize lip lines, is comfortable to wear.

Rant: can look garish/cheap or too young for me. Can emphasize lines. Don’t like glitter unless micro – but shimmer/foil is fine.

In theory I love them. I honestly still love shiny, glittery, bling things even at 47 – so not a stretch that I love metallic lippies. Unfortunately, I have lips with serious lines/wrinkles, which is emphasized severely by metallic products. Too bad for me because I have a fair amount of tolerance for texture/grit/grainy feeling lipsticks (a lot of people don’t) – but no tolerance for products that exaggerate my natural lip flaws. So I have to stick with standard cream finish lippies and reserve the metallic products for my eyes.

I love everything sparkly! Metallic lipsticks have been my favorite since they first started to become popular in the 90s when I was discovering makeup for the first time. I will always love metallic lips, they have a very special place in my heart ❤️

I love metallics especially UD and Guelain, not that I have many of those. I have many others but can’t list specific brands off the top of my head. If a lippie is cream, I often add a metallic of shimmer gloss on top. I’m a sparkly Leo, I guess.
