Mattifying Primers
I have more normal skin that doesn’t get too oily, so I don’t reach for or use mattifying primers that often as a result!

I cannot wear these mattifying primers. I need the hydrating ones, even now in our new home here, in So. Florida!
Mattifying primers are everything to me. I finally tried the Becca Ever Matte primer this weekend and my life has changed for the better. I press a small amount of it in my t-zone, use the Fenty primer everywhere else b/c it’s lightly mattifying. That with the Urban Decay All Nighter Waterproof setting powder & the CoverFX High Performance setting spray helps my makeup hold up against my oiliness really well.
I am a dewy kind of gal. I can’t have too much moisture so would never use a mattifying primer. My daughter is very oily and does but hasn’t found a really good one that works for her and she has tried quite a few. If anyone has any suggestions for ones that have worked for you, please share and thank you.
Rave: Hmmm, now that I think about it, this could actually be a better idea than I thought previously! On my t-zone ONLY. I am so sick and tired of my oil slick t-zone turning into a veritable oil slick within 5-6 hours of foundation application. So, this would be my 100% possible “rave”!
Rant: No way could I use it over my entire face and not look dried up, I’m sure!
This would apply to myself as well, just to the t-zone and my eyelids would also benefit from some matifying as well.
I have dry/dehydrated skin so the majority of time I don’t need anything mattifying. However, with 40C/104F outside like today, combined with high humidity, you sweat when walking outside even for short periods of time and even if you’re not oily. The last mattifying primer I’ve used on my T-zone was Hourglass Veil Mineral Primer (mini version). It’s lighter and I didn’t get much of that silicone feeling. However, I’ve found that in these situations, applying a mineral powder foundation (bareMinerals) or an oil-free/silicone-free BB/CC Cream is better for my skin type, as they let the skin breathe. If needed, I prefer to use a mattifying blotting powder on my T-zone instead of using a mattifying primer underneath.
I get very oily, so I thought mattifying would help. It does to an extent, but not as much as I would have thought. There are other general primers that do as good a job, if not better, so I tend to stick with my favourites.
Hate that some formulations don’t play nicely with certain products – that silicone pilling and balling up is the absolute WORST.
They never looked good on me, even in my younger oil slick days, and they did not keep me all that matte. I much preferred a blurring primer and Shiseido Pureness blotting papers.
I received a deluxe size of Cover FX Mattifying primer. It just sat in a drawer until a few weeks ago when I tried it on my nose only. I use hydrating primers everywhere else. I would say I have dry-combo skin. I think it actually has helped my makeup stay on my nose even during the heat of Texas’ springtime.
No, I don’t use mattifying primers at all at my age – but I think they would be perfect for someone with oily skin or T zone. I certainly needed it when I was a teenager and in my 20’s.
RANT: Most of them don’t work, in my experience. The ones that do can be expensive.
RAVE: When they do work, they are really helpful for keeping oily skin under control and helping makeup last longer.
