I have a love/hate relationship with limited edition products. On one hand, it’s nice to be able to get products that are different from those in the regular product line, but I don’t like the frenzy that can be created and things selling out so quicky. Another peeve about LE stuff is when limited collections are pushed out so quickly that you barely have any time to enjoy your goodies from one collection to the next. *ahem MAC*. Still love them though!
I totally agree! I, too, have a love/hate relationship with LE products. I haven’t even gotten the best out of my SCF Collection haul and now there’s all these new collections being released tempting me!! Gaaahhh!!!
i also agreee, i think mac needs to chill out with the collection…its becoming annoying
its not just me but my back account which goes through these ups and downs!
totally agree!
Me too! It’s really a frenzy I cannot afford! The more the collection are awesome, the quicker it goes out of stock! 🙁
I understand the concept of an item being more valued when it is “limited” in quantity, but I hate when makeup is so limited edition it sells out in 1 day! Can’t they just make enough to go around once?
This is exactly my thoughts on LE products! Selling out of products in one day is insane. I went to MAC the day Liberty Of London came out and bought the last Ever Hip l/s. The last one on the release day! There is other items I wanted as well but they were sold out already =(
– Love waiting for LE collections, talking abt them. And some products are really great.
– Hate how they make me buy in a rush. Or forget to buy a backup and they become my HG. Or love them so much and buy backup and they get repromote/I stop loving them that much.
I love that there is always a new product to get excited about. I hate that the LE factor makes it feel like you have to buy the product before it is gone.
Mostly I hate limited-edition products, yet the majority of my collection is comprised of them due to the ‘buy it now or lose the opportunity forever’ mentality that they impart. I hate it because instead of being able to be choosy about what really works for me, I have to snap up what I think might work immediately and then just be SOL either way–either it looks awful on me and I’m stuck with it OR it’s the best thing for me ever and I’ll never be able to get more.
Exactly!… I couldn’t have said it better myself.
so true!
My feelings exactly!
Same here! & Most of my HG items are LE!
Then you’re stuck crossing your fingers & hoping that MAC decides to repromote them…=^/
Or taking a chance & trying to track them down on Ebay….sometimes for twice the price!
I love that I covet them and it’s feels ‘special’ to use a LE product. It’s a unique color/formula that I can’t just go out and buy right then.
I hate that I feel compelled for certain collections to rush out and buy the things I’m interested in because they might sell out. Or really liking something and worrying because it’s LE that it will run out.
What I hate about limited editions is the fact, that I cannot repurchase a product if I really really love it. Fortunately I’m not in this situation and I don’t buy back-ups because my products last a very long time.
I think there a way too much limited editions available and I’m happy that they don’t evoke the I have to buy this stuff, because it’s limited.
I can understand rotating unusual eye or lip colors, that might be special for the season, or trends.
But is there even a POINT to limited edition brow pencils, lip liners, etc. Aren’t these supposed to be items that we would incorporate into our daily routines? Not just a special look once in a a while?
Plus, those types of products are HARD to ration out. A pan of limited edition eye shadow might well last me well over a year. I killed my brow filler in Lingering in what…. 3-4 months? It makes NO sense having those products themed for limited editions!
I really wish they cycled up more popular collections more frequently. I know there’s the occasional repromote, but some of it just seems like the products they’re picking aren’t the ones that the most people want to see!
That might just be my bias though, since i’m STILL furious that they had the LOVELY Mcqueen paintpot collection, and have yet to release anything even remotely similar since!
I like limited edition products that have pretty packaging, but the downside is that the most desirable ltd. ed. products are always difficult to find. I hate it when I really want something and it’s sold out before I even have the chance to get to the store. It’s so disappointing. On the other hand, it can be fun to get your hands on something that is hard to find.
I have never tried MAC (yet! LOL) but I do get overwhelmed with the bazillion different collections they put out. Some are new, many are renamed and well.. makes my head want to exlode!
And I am so bummed that I cannot find the Bobbi Brown coral palette. I really wanted that one and missed the boat ;(
Sort of mixed feelings really. I think the whole ‘Limited Edition’ concept works very well for certain things like Urban Decay’s Alice in Wonderland, or when brands release things like holiday sets or gorgeous compacts. In that sense, I can totally see how ‘Limited Edition’ would work really well as a marketing device. Lets face it: how many of us would really consider buying Lancome Sparkling Cherub if it weren’t limited edition?
But in my opinion, brands like M.A.C. really overdo it. They are of course perfectly within their rights to do so, they are first and foremost profit-oriented, but it is such a pain. Especially when they release things like nude eyeshadow and you just look at it and think ‘What’s so special about that?’.
So, sometimes LE works but when companies do it too often, it makes me want to tell them where to go.
Well, part of me loves the chance to buy LE products if they truly are unique in some way, but as others have mentioned it is beyond annoying when they sell out very fast or are hard to find…
Another part of me resents the companies who do a lot of LE things… It just seems like a ploy to offer up the products that are or are nearly identical to products already in their lines (to just pad their bottom lines…)
I’m very selective about what LE products I purchase.
…to be honest I only like limited edition products because the packaging is pretty.
LOVE the excitment related to a new product
HATE the fact that it’s limited
I love LE because I can find more unusual pieces and usually buy the ones that are compelling. I hate it though because some of my favorites come out of the LE and are never repromoted leaving me lusting after a lipstick I may never be able to find again. I hate this because I too have started buying backups and never truely falling in love with them like the ones I only buy one of.
I like them because I’m actually super picky about what I want, so limited editions always put forward new things to look at. And because I’m so picky, I don’t have too much of a problem with wanting to buy out an entire collection, or having massive buyer’s regret if I miss out on an item. What I don’t like is not knowing when a limited edition collection is gonna go bye bye, like how I just recently lost out on getting Joie de Vivre from the MAC Lillyland collection because I was waiting to make a MAC Pro order with a friend, which encourages the mass backup/rush buying problem. Like Az I’m also afraid I’ll stop liking something as much and be stuck with a bunch of backups I don’t want anymore. AND the annoying “sold out” problem. But overall I really like LE’s, and appreciate that MAC puts them out at a steady clip (but I reeeeally wish we could be told when they will be pulled off the shelves!)
I love LEs when they are truly something special. Why do they need to push LE after LE every other week? How does that make the LE items special? Sometimes it feels as if they want every item from the permanent range to be LE at least once every two years. I think there’s no use to an LE eyeliner in solid black or LE neutral e/s since they are so ‘standard’ today. With such a broad permanent range it is kinda hard to make a LE truly unique so why not focus on three or four LEs p.a. (one for each season perhaps) and make them special and unique and and good quality and worth the anticipation and worth spending the extra cash?
Other than that I agree with everything that’s been said so far.
THIS I agree with on SO many levels.
I think it’s curious as to why a company would release limited edition products for skin care. What’s the point in finding something that works for you if you can’t buy it anymore in a couple weeks/months? As you are trying to product you won’t go out to stock up since you need to make sure you like it. But then again why would I want to be using a product that is years old bc I had to stock up? It really makes no sense to me.
so true!!!
LE skincare?! Now THAT is reaaaaaaally stupid.
Now this I COMPLETELY agree with!
I am in LOVE with MAC’s Volcanic Ash Exfoliant and it was a LE product =(
If some stuff wasn’t LE I wouldn’t probably buy it, but because I only have a window of time to purchase….
Some stuff is too good to be LE though. Like paints and brushes.
Agree with most that it’s a love/hate relationship with LE products.
I love that new shades come out. Love the hype. Love dreaming about the products I see online before they hit stores. I love rushing out and getting it before it goes away forever. Love having a coveted LE product (is that strange?? lol)
I HATE when I fall in love with a product and hit pan!!! I also hate when I look at awesome tutorials online (like Christine’s!) and see LE products used with no dupes or wish I had the original. I hate when a product falls short. I also hate getting prodcuts b/c they are stunning but I never wear them or they are exact dupes of ones I already have.
I still would rather world with LE products than without 🙂
I think mostly, LE stuff is pretty much a marketing ploy to create hype before the release date and increase consumer demand, so they sell out and make a great deal of profit.
I only have two limited edition products as far as I know – Guerlain Gems lipstick, which I believe was a Christmas release (and yet, I bought mine in March) and Dior Night Diamond Shimmer Powder which was also a Xmas release about 2 or 3 years ago.
But I didn’t buy these *because* they were LE, I got them because I liked them (and could afford it at the time, hah!)
I would have loved the Stila Barbie eyeshadow palette, but alas, we don’t get Stila here…
So basically, I think once or twice a year is OK (like for Breast Cancer Research or holiday collections) because it allows us to see, experience and enjoy something different – but if a brand is promoting different LE items every couple of months I think it’s a bit of a con to pressure people into buying stuff they don’t need.
MAC LE makes me crazy
for example. the new viva glam sold out in Lady gaga.. ok its nice but if its a fundraiser item like all the viva glams…why is it sold out ??? its crazy
funny but i was at Nordstroms and some woman wanted 15 GAGA’s to give to her daughter friends as a bday party favor.. sold out there so she was not happy lol
hello kitty, barbie, all big $$$ makers and big items that sell for $$$$ on eba later with trademark name people like
MAC has too many campaigns… there are just so many shades of color to have a campaign so often
I’m a sucker for limited edition products.I REALLY miss Chanel Inimitable mascara in Emeraude and Dior nail polish in Sweet Orange.
I have mixed feelings about Limited Edition Products. I love that its different than the permanent lines of companies. But I hate the fact that it’s limited, when I want more it’s not going to be there.
Honestly, I love the LE stuff…especially MACs. I’ll agree with everyone that I absolutely hate the “have to get it now” factor…that peeves me and my wallet (as well as my fiance) off. But I really enjoy getting colors I couldn’t normally find to play with for a bit. I will say, however, that I’m one of those people who have an ungodly amount of makeup (eyeshadows in particular) so it takes me a really long time to go through something…by the time I do I normally have so many other things to play with that I’ve enjoyed it while it lasted but am ready for something new. I can see how they would be a pain for those who like to incorporate them in their daily routine though.
I agree with the love/hate things. I love it that there’s new collections every season, I’m always really excited about the new ones, but Mac collections are too frequent and annoyingly limited, so if you’re not quick enough to get them, they sell out in a few days! :S Also the Urban Decay Alice palette, why couldn’t they make 1000 extra palettes, they could have made themselves more money?! Instead it’s the people selling them on eBay for $100 are making the profit! How does that make sense???
Every once in a while I will find a limited edition item that I love but for the most part they’re no big deal and totally dupable. The one and only thing I love about limited edition items is founding them a couple of months down the road in my local CCO. What a bargain!!
ha ha this is very funny to me right now. My all time favorite lipstick is MAC’s Way To Love from Rose Romance last summer. Yesterday my puppy somehow managed to find it and chew it all up. Stop shaking yr head in shame at me – puppies are amazing at finding and eating everything – a bit of pink lipstick is not going to kill him! Anyway, I am now seriously dupe hunting, so Limited Edition is not my friend right now. Agree with SoVeryFabulous that MAC puts out way too many LE collections so you never get a chance to enjoy yr new goodies.
GASP!! This would be my nightmare because Way to Love is my HG pink lipstick!! I’ve been dupe hunting for a while just in case something this disastrous happens!! I wish you luck!!
Oh dear! 🙂 Have you tried eBay for a replacement? Or MUA? I’m sure you’ll find one there. Good luck!
Way to love is also a favorite lipstick of mine too. I recently digged out 3 more from a Mac counter drawer with the help of my favorite Mac saleslady, even though I was told months ago that they had all gone. Then I realized that I would never be able to finish all of them before they went bad. I am going to give one away to a friend who just had twins and I hope the lipstick get equally cherished as by me.
Before I found my backups I was also eager finding dupes. Now I understand my preferences better, I know how to create similar shades to Way to love (or to what I like) with other lip products I already own. So friends, good luck hunting dupes. The answers might already be in your possession.
Because I never finish using up a makeup product entirely, and I love owning something unique!
This might be a little off topic, I love Temptalia cause I can read up on all the upcoming limited edition collections. I would go broke if I bought everything, so I just pick my favorite favorite favorite stuff and save up for it. I haven’t bought anything since the cremeblushes in Lillyland, and now i’m saving up for a big haul in the beach collection, since I looove the beach and anything that has to do with summer. I try not to let LE stuff drive me broke
I feel like I don’t have time to decide whether or not I like a product before buying it. If I think I’m interested at all, I feel the urge to snatch it up. In the end, if I hate it, I’ve either wasted the product by returning it, or wasted my money by keeping it. I hate not being able to read reviews, look at swatches, etc, for a good long time before making a purchase.
limited edition products are my makeup weakness. i think its the mentality that A) they wont be around for long (especially if its MAC) so i better go buy them, and B) they must be BETTER than everything else.
also i get scared that they’ll never be sold again…. so i buy LE all the time. its a bad habit.
i LOVE limited edition products becuz there too pretty but i hate them becuz once i fall in love with them i can never get them again and the “limited edition” factor is just for making me buy them
limited edition products spell AGITATION! I call shenanigans on the whole business.
I too am a big sucker for LE Products. Especially MAC.
Limited edition products are a silly idea to me unless they’re limited for a bit then coming back then going away again, etc. Limited edition consumables with an expiry date are silly.
I LOVEEE raven kohl power
Love them, but hate when I miss them.
Like the Hello Kitty collection. =.=||| I’ve been dying for the lipstick but yeah, all I have is the blush I got off an online sale and that’s not a nice feeling cause I’m always worried about hygiene and all that. I got my ass on the MAC scene waaaaay too late and blew my chances to get it.
And ah, yes, thank god I got Ripe Peach.
For me, it’s something like a “Hate it if I don’t get it, feel damn hell of a good if I do.”
My sentiments are pretty much the same as a lot of people’s – hate that when there is a great LE colour that is sold out in a millisecond you can’t get it and why the heck wouldn’t you make that colour more available if it’s so popular?? Don’t you think you’d just make more money off of it if it was regularly available? I highly dislike the whole marketing scam that you have to go buy it NOW because it’ll be gone if you don’t and you don’t have time to think about the purchase.
That being said, I really do appreciate the more trendy colours being LE because they won’t always sell so well and I LOVE the fantastic packaging (when MAC really puts in the effort). I usually limit myself to $100 per collection, if I buy anything at all from them.
I limit myself to $100 too! I usually spend some time on temptalia and other websites reading reviews and looking at swatches of the products, and making lists of what I for sure want, and what I want to take a closer look at. I only buy things that are either really really unique, or something I know I will use.
I agree with some of the comments here, that a SHADE for a season or look should be limted – i.e lipstick, lipgloss, eyeshadow.
But then why release a black eyeliner? or ANOTHER nude eyeshadow, or skincare?! skincare is clearly for routine use! why ruin peoples routines!
I think alot of LE is to do with how well something sells, and if it sells out then they will make it permanent. Which in a way is a great idea, because then money isnt wasted producing a product that doesnt sell well.
Personally – I absolutely love the LE mineralize blushes, it gives me something to look forward to every year, or few months, because last year was Colour Craft – which had 6 LE blushes, this year too fabulous, and i think its GREAT!
but then all ages, sexs, races… why do we need limited neutral colours when theres aready a large selection available!
grr!
rant over hehe
I love LE items!!!!! 🙂
i also have a love hate relationship with LE products. especialy when it comes to MAC. their collections have been wayyyy overwhelming!their has been soo many and its only march. i really wish they would put some though in their collections and make them unique and with special LE packaging , so then its special , and not always use their boring black.
i LOVE it bc i feel like i have something that know one els will have later on and others will want . but
i HATE it b/c lately with MAC u can really only get what u want when a collection come out only on the first day. other than that your SOL. so i always go thier look it over and try and get the items that may sell out quick, i ask my MAs. then ill go on youtube and see what others are gettting , then think about it and make another trip if i realy like the item and its selling fast.
but what the hell is up with mac only getting so little of their LE products lately, they become sold out on the first day? ohh .. i know why, its bc they have been pushing them out like crazy! STUPID!
so pretty much ive ben having a little gripe with MAC lately! the only other collections im looking forward to are the to the beach and pret apapier. which i hope they stick with the buttom LE packaging from the promo pic =) (fingers crossed!).
BTW i never buy backups anyway, i already get so much makeuop and theirs always a new color or something similar coming out ! right ?
what MAC should do is have a collection out 1 a month , so thats 12 total in the year. that should be quite enough for them , then we will have something to talk about and anticipate, and also where all the new makeup we got for that month.
I hate the idea of it, because it means if the product is a total rave, by the time you discover it’s a staple in your collection, it’ll be gone and you won’t be able to stock up on it. Then you have to go around looking for dupes… Just depressing.
I love and hate them. For example, I love MAC, but there are too many collections coming out like a week of two after the first collection came out. In two and a half weeks, two other MAC collections are about to be released. Just great, I spent a fortune on the Spring Forecast and Liberty of London collection. (T^T) I love you MAC but you’re making me broke.
I love LE products because essentially it ends up as me buying slight variations of colors i already own. when new collections come up i pretty much know what i am going to get. i know what i like and what i will and won’t wear so i don’t end up spending a whole bunch. i never feel like i have to “complete” a collection. in fact, i have never bought an entire collection before. (although i am getting pretty close when it comes to MAC’s Rose Romance collection since a bunch of stuff i missed out on ends up in the CCOs.) i already know i will almost always go for pinks in any given collection especially if they are blue pinks. i hardly ever get reds or browns or bright colors because i prefer a lot of light, pastel colors like pinks and lilacs.
there is a lot of frustration in wanting something that no longer is on sale. but this is a phenomenon that only happened with collections before i got into MAC makeup. i think it’s funny that i used to not like MAC until i started getting into their collections. once that happened, i became a collector and everything went down hill from there. LOL. ^_^
in looking at my current collection i realize that i have pretty much stayed true to my personal preferences. with a few exceptions, i have stuck with items i was guaranteed to enjoy and use beyond the initial LE excitement factor. and i think now i am at a point where i know which items will and won’t work for me so i am not as easily swayed into buying something simply because it is LE. that being said, i already know what i want from the MAC to the beach collection and i can’t wait for the next round of MAC releases!
one thing i won’t do is buy backups. i figure these are trendy colors and by the time i run out, there will be a new latest and greatest or there will be a repromote.
It’s a good thing that I live here in Asia and most of the LE’s can still be found in our department stores. A large number of LE’s comes late here so I still have plenty of time to read reviews and I can make informed decisions on w/c to buy, and I, as much as possible have avoided expensive mistakes. But the bad thing too is some LE’s can’t be found here – like the Chanel Jade Rose Nail Lacquer that I’ve been dying to buy last year. I had to travel to Hong Kong to look for it only to find out that it’s sold out. Booo!
I haven’t used MAC products, except the brush cleaner. And I find it annoying/overwhelming that MAC somehow releases LE’s like every two weeks. That’s why I never bother perusing it’s LE releases on top of its permanent line. Instead of enjoying makeup it just gives me a headache. Last time I went to MAC, they still have the Warm and Cozy collection. Cherry Blossom Collection by Guerlain just arrived here almost the same time w/ Chanel Les Impressions. Egerie by Shu Uemura arrived some time last February. Summer collections last year are still at the counters.
The opposite can be said about Japanese products that I use (like Kanebo Lunasol and Coffret D’or, Shiseido Maquillage etc). They only release a limited amount of products for their seasonal collections, plus the holiday collection. They don’t have a permanent line at all and they constantly change both the base and point makeup (less frequent for the base makeup of Lunasol)for each season. W/c peeves the hell out of me. I had to buy backups for foundations and eyeshadows only to realize that I don’t have to because they release their products with same shades but different and improved formulations (lighter for Spring and Summer and much heavier for Fall and Winter, w/c is notoriously done by Coffret D’or.) But they release it quite late in my area too, but once it’s gone – it’s gone.
How long are limited edition products supposed to last? I have a Chanel glossimer (Waterlily) that is from last year that is still available. Three colors came out and one was LE I believe. That is the only LE product I have.
I hate falling in love with them (especially when they’re HG quality!) then knowing you’ll never see them unless they’re repromoted. Yes, I’m looking at you Fresh Salmon lipstick!
Fresh Salmon is availible on the MAC website right now still..
i kinda like them! i don’t like the fact that when i get something LE and i like it i can’t buy another one because there not in the regular line!i agree that mac should chill with all that collection madness! boy i’m lucky, the collections at mac don’t get sold out so fast, after 3-4 weeks there still there!
I love LE collections for the most part, most of my favorite shadows from MAC are limited edition but I hate that Ebay sellers buy up all the hyped products and resell them for more money.. Its completely unfair to anyone who isnt able to by things on the first day they are released..
I don’t buy into the LE hype. I prefer brands like NARS that release new collections with products that will fit nicely into the preexisting line. They take the opportunity to expand their product line through its seasonal launches, rather than manipulate these false frenzies that brands like MAC create.
I think MAC and ebay are in cahoots LOL.
Limited edition makes me buy things that I DON’T NEED!!! Its good to have somethng different, but usually many brands have very good items in their perm collection…like if you closely look at MAC, some of the best shadows are in their perm line..and I have seen majority of celebrity make-up artist creating wonders wth the regular MAC colors…
Love the range of colors and products that come out with the collections.
Hate the fact that there are usually one or two items that I end up loving but it sold out and I can’t get a back up.
Hate the fact that I don’t have time go home and think if I really want a certain item (Hollywood Nights and Style Minx from MAC’s Heatherette) and ny the time I to back THE NEXT DAY, its gone.
I HATE the fact that MAC doesn’t re-promote certain products at all (HELLO!!! METAL ROCK MSF)
I get why they have their collections with limited edition items. I am guessing they just want to keep things fresh so people will continue to buy from them like crazy. But I do think they release way too many. One a month would still be a lot but it’s more doable then 3. I don’t no about you all but I like to have some money to eat. LOL. However no one twists my arm to by all the great products and from time to time they do come out with some amazing new stuff. I just wish they released less and made those items really unique and most haves. Sorry I went a little long winded on this. Haha. 🙂
I, too have a love/hate relationship with limited editions. I love cute packaging that is different from all my other stuff, but I hate when they run out and I want more! Like MAC’s truth & light lipglass – I’m too scared to order off of ebay so I guess I’ll just wait for a re-promote and stock up!
Some things I hate about LEs: sometimes there is huge hype surrounding the product so you have to decide rather quickly if you want it or not (a “Will I regret not getting it?” sort of thing). Also the fact that when you use it up, it’s gone.
But LEs do keep things fresh and interesting 🙂
I Love the products hate the limited edition. great marketing poly though, because we buy it so we don’t miss out so we spend more which I’d thought of that one. I hate how much MAC does this too us.
Love: They tend to be edgier colors than are in a brand’s regular line-up.
Hate: Limited-edition…yep.
love that they make unusual colors and most of the time you love them!!! but hate that you can’t get them once they are over 🙁
I also have a love/hate relationship with limited edition items. I love the fact that I can buy a new item that isn’t part of the regular collection, so I can keep my stash fresh and updated. I hate the fact that certain items are sold out really quickly (Ripe Peach blush from SCF being a good example) and the fact that I can’t repurchase a specific item and have to wait until they repromote it. If they ever do…
Another pet peeve is that fact that MAC releases limited collections in such an incredible high speed, that it’s almost impossible to enjoy my purchases. Most of the time I can’t even remember what I bought last month, let alone that I have used it!
What can I say about LE products? They are a love and hate relationship. I love the fact that I can own something that some people can’t get their hands on when it is sold out. But then I hate that I have to get a certain item ASAP especially when it is a really hyped up item. Also with MAC collections they can be torture with your bank account!
metal rock should return. it worked on alot of people darker brown skin. a nice glow without being too light!
