Rant & Rave: Guerlain

Tell us what you love and hate about...

Guerlain

They need to release more Rouge Gs! I feel like they release maybe one or two a year, and they’re usually just a variation on red. Their eyeshadows need a total overhaul, and I think they could do better with blush. Their strong ranges are foundations, bronzers, and lip products.

I like their Terracotta and Meteorites (sparingly), but the fragrance in everything is so strong!
I realize they’re primarily a perfume house, so please leave the fragrance there!
That’s why I won’t use the foundations, lipsticks or skin care.

Anne Avatar

I haven’t had much luck with this line. I have one rose blush and 3 meteorites powders. That’s it. I tried their foundation from Sephora.com, but the lightest shade was still too warm for my skin tone, so back it went. I can’t find a shade of lipstick that’s good for me, either. Their eye shadows seem a bit dry and lacking in pigment. I don’t use bronzer very often, so I’ve never been tempted to even look at theirs. For the price, Guerlain is one of those lines that I can’t bring myself to buy unless I really, really love it. (Well, that goes for everything, but Guerlain gives me sticker shock more than most other lines.) Their packaging sure is beautiful, though.

Outside of Shalimar as my first fragrance — I’ve tried only the Lingerie de Peau foundation (which I like a lot); a primer (a sample; don’t recall which it was, just that worked fine but I found something less expensive that I like just as much); and Air Kiss the formula of which I liked but the color was too dark for me. Given the brand’s high prices and what I recall of eyeshadows reviews, I don’t see myself trying their color products anytime soon.

I agree with your comment on the Rouge Gs. I LOVE their base products and Meteorites, but their lipsticks, apart from the Rouge Gs, aren’t that great. Their limited edition holiday shadows are very very nice, but I don’t know why they can’t apply that same standard of quality across all of their eyeshadow palettes. I think the main thing is having more consistency across the different product lines.

Christy Avatar

I love the way their products smell, but I can’t wear anything from Guerlain near my eyes, possibly due to the fragrance. I adored Lingerie de Peau and the pressed Meteroites I had (I think it was called “Crazy”), but I realized they were the products that were making my eyes red and watery.

Linda Avatar

Guerlain sweeps me away with it’s French romance. That said, I have owned one lipstick by them, which I like a lot. Other than that, it’s not a brand that draws me in. My mom + Shalimar = memories. <3

The SA at my nearby Nordstrom told me that the Guerlain counter will be gone within weeks. It will be replaced by Tom Ford and another brand she could not remember.

TravelingBlush Avatar

Interesting that Tom Ford is replacing Guerlain. I never thought of these two as substitutes of each other. Sort of old money vs new money.

I don’t own a lot of Guerlain. I love the Meteorites and the pressed Meteorites. I like that the refillable compacts are pretty and sturdy, with some heft to them. Guerlain usually has nice packaging in general. Their lipsticks are beautiful, but spendy enough I don’t own any.

Rant: The new eyeshadow formulation. I loved the prior one, and own several palettes, but the new one isn’t so hot. Their blushes don’t excite me.

Mariella Avatar

My biggest HATE is that so many of their products come in luxury packaging and yet those packages (the Rouge G lipstick containers, the Meteorites pearls, for example) aren’t refillable. I remember way back in the distant past (before Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) when prestige brands like Estee Lauder and Ultima II had refillable lipstick tubes and powder compacts. It’s now 2017 and Guerlain still hasn’t cottoned on to this idea. It’d be nice to pay 10 or 15 dollars less for a lipstick bullet in basic packaging to put into a Rouge G holder or to get a cheaper cardboard package of Meteorites to put into the very reusable metal and plastic containers that the Meteorites “balls” come in. And I guess that takes me to their pricing – I do feel their prices for skin care and colour cosmetics are way too high. I’m lucky that I can get some of the pricier items at a Shoppers near me using my points to bring down the price considerably. I agree that their eyeshadows should be overhauled (they got rid of some great ones and replaced them with mediocre but highly priced ones). Finally, while I’m not bothered by scented products and generally enjoy them, I feel for those who can’t wear heavily scented stuff. Maybe they should scale back considerably on the fragrance. The
Baby Skin “foundation” is so heavily scented that even I – someone not troubled by scent – really notice it.

Ziwei Avatar

I have yet to try anything amazing from this brand, so I can’t really rave about it.

I did not like the meteorites that I got. I don’t really understand the concept of finishing powders. I just know that the meteorites doesn’t keep my oil at bay and I can’t really see anything on my face. The scent was pleasant though.

I’ve worn Guerlain for decades. I love Rouge G and think Guerlain’s way with lipstick and glosses in general is way ahead of the curve. I only wish they’d expand and update the color selection of Rouge G and the lip glosses. Météorites, bronzers and primers are also beautifully done. The other products can be hit or miss. Guerlain used to court the mature woman who was 40+. In recent years, though, I think Guerlain has begun developing an identity crisis. There will be some elegant pieces for more mature women and then a flurry of pieces designed for twenty-somethings. The Petit Robe Noir cosmetic collection is an example of an attempt to court a younger demographic at the expense of the regular line.

I own just 1 lipstick from Guerlain, with another one (or two) on my wishlist. Almost bought their one holiday Meteorite Pearls, the one in the snow frosted glass that had stars inside. Other than a few things, I’ve been left less than impressed with much of what the brand offers. Their eyeshadows DO need a major overhaul is right! Those look like low quality DS eyeshadow, think Revlon or Maybelline. And I also agree that they need to expand their lipstick shade range beyond red and pinky shades. Although, yep, I’ve got Red Strass on my wishlist!

Faw Avatar

The brand has lost a lot of esteem in my view. Those petite robe noir lipsticks and the new eye shadow formula were both busts imltho. I’m glad they released new shades of their lingerie de peau foundation, but to be honest they should have had more than a paltry offering of shades to begin with so praising it feels like praising a company for doing the bare minimum.

Tatiana Avatar

Huge rant, they need to leave the perfume out of their cosmetics. I realize they’re a perfume house ( I do love some of their perfumes), but I don’t want perfume on my face which has super reactive skin.

Genevieve Avatar

Rave: how I love Les Gris and that beautiful eye shadow line from long ago! And their foundations run really pale for people like me.
Rant: I have felt that the brand has dropped the ball totally on their eyeshadows in the past few years. And all their other products are so expensive that I don’t buy them. Whilst their lipsticks are great, they receive the same ratings as other less expensive brands that I can afford.

Little Red Avatar

I own a bunch of the lipsticks and the face products such as bronzer, powder (pressed and pearls), foundation but not the other stuff. Like someone else said, their product packaging should be reusable.

LuLu Avatar

I commented just a week or so ago about the absence of Rouge G lipsticks. Also, these lipsticks are frequently seen discounted on RueLaLa.com, never a good sign for a beauty company.

Anne Avatar

I went to the RueLaLa site and it requires you to register or sign-in. I tried to register, but it said my e-mail address did not match my password. I’ve never heard of the site, so I couldn’t possibly have registered before. Yet, it tells me my registration e-mail and password don’t match. That’s a first for me!

LuLu Avatar

Hi! I have had that happen to me with sites before and it drives me crazy. Rue has great customer service; call 888/992-5252. I’ve bought clothes, accessories and they’re real strong on bedding
However, dying to tell you I just found 9 shades of Rouge G on Costo.com for $36.90, including shipping. Don’t know where you live but Costco is like Walmart but better and nicer to their employees. Best, Lulu.

Kate Avatar

Guerlain seem to have hit a patch where they’re trying too many things at once. I don’t think that their new blushes or shadow palettes are as good as the products they replaced. The trade off of Rouge Automatique for Kiss Kiss lipsticks was at best even. In all of this, I feel like their Petite Robe Noire lipstick range is underrated.

Their foundations and finishing powders are great, but the colour selection is too limited. No one can touch their bronzers.

The Rouge G is the pinnacle of lipstick as far as I’m concerned, but they need more shades. And they need to bring back Gigolo, because they have nothing close in their range.

Stacey Avatar

Love Gigolo.
The packaging is always being revamped. Changing the refillable packaging is the pits. I have old versions where you buy the container for refills, then the design gets discontinued. Brand is overstated…perfumed products, not reusable design….almost buying the design, not the product.

Anne Avatar

I haven’t had a chance to really try any Guerlain as it’s way above my price point, and the times I get to splurge on something another brand catches my eye, but from what I’ve heard their foundations are great (though some are love it or hate it kind of formulas), their bronzers are amazing when I swatch them and you’ve made me very curious about their lip products. I’ve also been sorely kicking myself for not getting the Perles des Neiges back in Holiday 2015 as they were just such a pretty item as well as being highly rated. None of the Meteorites have lived up to that so I’m holding out for something of that caliber to come out someday.

Chelsea Avatar

I decided to go through everything I love from Guerlain… Turns out, I almost have every base covered. Fragrance, primer, foundation, finishing powder, highlighter, bronzer and lips – love, love, LOVE!

I’m yet to be wowed by the eyeshadows, but it’s rare any high-end, luxury brand grabs me with eyeshadow… And I’m totally okay with that! I’d rather spend more on luxury base products, perfumes and powders (that I can display on my vanity). I’ve never notice blushes from the brand either, very ‘blah’.

A lot of my Guerlain collection is strictly ‘special occasion’ wear, but for days when I’m feeling a little down or my skin isn’t looking so hot, turning to luxury helps me feel good about myself… Totally psychological, but it works!

Other than this, I have a few daily wear items from the brand, the Meteorites Baby Glow foundation is my go-to summer base and Guerlain bronzer (the Joli Tient or Sheer) is my above and beyond favourite (of all brands). I also have some Meteorites Perles from a LE holiday collection 5+ years ago that have travelled all around the world with me, is totally battered but there’s still a fair amount of product left and the fragrance is still there, BEST finishing powder of all time!

TravelingBlush Avatar

I think Guerlain the makeup is very well done, even the eyeshadows which I always found to be beautiful and a pleasure to work with.

The problem is with the fragrances, especially the lower end category which seems to be going the Chanel direction (not in good way). They have just hired Angelina Jolie to promote their perfumes. *rolls eyes*

I bought a set of the meteorite pearls that were a spring or summer version, but in person the colors were completely different from the ones pictured, and the box looked cheap in person too, and I didn’t care for the product performance either. I don’t mind paying for quality but that was a total fail. The other thing I got was that cute thing that looked like a chest of drawers with cheek and eye colors on different levels. That was rather nice but nothing spectacular.

The only Guerlain product I still have is one nail polish, which I haven’t tried yet. I am not eager to buy anything else from them.

Mark Avatar

A little late for this, BUT: the names don’t do it for me. Browny Clap and Rosy Bang? No thank you, ma’am.

I DO love, though, their complexion products, with Lingerie de Peau and their bronzers being my favourite.

There’s something about luxe brand foundations that jut do it for me; the smoothness and the way they sit on skin are just MARVELOUS.

Mmkay, byyyeeee.

<3

Also forgot to add that La Petite Robe Noire is TO DIE FOR. If you wanna smell like a sexy cherry, that's your ticket to sassy gourmand-ness. Okay, bye.
