Editor's Review

The formula is supposed to be “long-lasting” with “rich” and “seamless color.” The texture has a more velvety feel: smooth, thinner but glides on easily, and doesn’t have a lot of wetness/creaminess. The pigmentation varied from shade to shade with most shades having semi-opaque coverage. They were easy to apply along the lips and comfortable to apply, as they did not tug. The formula lasted anywhere from three hours to six hours, and some shades were somewhat drying and others were non-drying.

Claims / Ingredients

The application of a lipstick combined with the convenience of a pencil in a jumbo crayon design. Lips are instantly saturated with rich pigments and a velvety matte finish. The long lasting, non-drying formula is enriched with emollients for a creamy texture, while a combination of unique silicones ensures long-lasting, seamless color for hours. Use for lining, all-over lip color, or pairing with another lip product.

On my medium skin tone, this muddy brown color, barely shows up, and it’s not flattering on my lips. I think I could use it as an eyeshadow pencil, but a lot of the product gets blended away and stays on my finger or brush. It’s highly pigmented when first applying, but sheers out a lot if you try to blend it and I’m not sure about the staying power. I wouldn’t purchase this formula, especially this colour again.

My absolute favorite lip product I own. The color is just perfect! Feels great on, easy to apply, travel-friendly, non-drying. These aren't the longest lasting lip pencil, but the color and comfort make up for it.

I am a loooong time fan of Charlotte Gainsbourg and while I don't blame anyone for not knowing about her (or her father), I wish everybody did! Anyway, this is a beautiful color (both colors for the collection are), nothing really extraordinary but a very posh and rich pink to wear daily.

Settles into lines and makes lips look chapped, even if they aren't. Shows up unevenly and is not buildable without looking cakey. Nice colour, but the product really needs to be improved and isn't worth the price. Would not buy again.

I got this in my Sephora birthday gift (2015) and I have to say it's not a lip product I'd EVER have picked out because it's matte and red...I almost never wear either of those things. BUT I LOVED this!! What a pleasant surprise and a truly great birthday gift from Nars and Sephora. I am definitely a fan. Even though it was matte, it wasn't dry or look chalky. Even though it was a wine-y red, it wasn't vampy or too bright. I have fair skin with pink undertones so red usually looks weird on me, but I would definitely repurchase this. This is going to be fantastic to wear this fall and winter!

Fell in love with it the second I put it on! This is the kind of red lipstick that any girl could wear and pull off. I got it as a sample size gift from Sephora and I am planning on purchasing it from NARS soon. I just love it!

I got this today in my birthday gift from sephora. I dont usually wear red lipstick but since trying this one on, i may have to rethink it. It is gorgeous and sexy, and i think very flattering. Even though it smudged a bit on the corner of my mouth, i can get it off by using a tissue and powder to "erase" it. Red lipstick can smear but since this is a pencil, you can prevent smearing over the lip line by tracing it and then filling it in. I wondered how you get more of it since it didnt feel like a wooden pencil and it didnt twist up, but you do sharpen it with a sharpener.

Train Bleu was my first Nars pencil purchase, and also my first (and so far only) return. The aubergine tone was lost on me, the color looked muddy and black. I wasn't going for a Wet n' Wild black lipstick circa 7th grade look, and therefore was extremely grateful for Sephora's generous return policy!

Surprisingly awesome on me! I thought it would be too bright but it is superb as a summer red. Sometimes I tone it down with Dragon Girl to make it a little less orange.

Definitely my most favorite shade in the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil range! I have never loved a matte lip color as much as I love this. It's very versatile (I love it most with NARS' Mata Hari, though) and it always gives me that fun-yet-sophisticated overall feel about my makeup. Regarding its application… well, I guess I have nothing to complain about because it always glides on nicely but it remains matte all throughout (I wear MAC Prep + Prime Lip under it, BTW). It neither tugs nor pulls, and I also do not feel it to be drying or settling into my lip lines. I don't exactly remember how long it lasts on me because I'm fond of retouching my lips after eating or smoking, but I do recall that whenever I retouch it, it hasn't faded much. When it does fade, though, it leaves a very pretty lilac-berry stain. Definitely going to repurchase this when I run out!

I love the shade, but I can't seem to make it appear on me as neatly as it does on Christine. Train Bleu seems to settle into my lip lines even though I also always wear MAC Prep + Prime Lip prior to putting on the lip pencil, in addition to making sure I've exfoliated my lips beforehand. It looks wonderful during the first to second hour, but past that, my lips begin to look as if there are black specks on them and I hate that I have to wipe my lips off entirely to fix the situation. ..maybe I'm doing something wrong? Not really sure, but I've never encountered this with most of the other colors in the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil range.

This is a deep true blue-based red. The lipstick is highly pigmented. Although this is a matt formular it is not drying on the lips at all. Because of the pencil shape, you can use this as lipstick and lipliner. However I would recommend using a colorless lipliner for the outer rim of you lip to achieve a flawless look. The only con is, that the sharping of the pencil is always a bit messy. If you like red matt lips this is definitly a lipstick worth checking out!

This is type of beautiful dark red that works across the board on skin tones, its very flattering! I love the matte finish but it can get a little drying so make sure to prep lips with a nice scrub and a good lip balm. Overall a great product in a great shade, I'll most defiantly be purchasing more of these in the future!

Cruella is the first velvet matte lip pencil I got, but it won't be the last! I am not a fan of glossy finish, so this lip pencil is ideal to me, and inspite being matte, it applys like a dream and I don't find it drying. The red is a very beautiful deep red and it last for hours. It fades leaving a pretty stain. I am eyeing the Dolce Vitta as an option for a nude lip color!
