OCC Little Black Dress Lip Tar Stained Gloss ($18.00 for 0.33 fl. oz.) is described as a “sheer veil of black pigment.” It may look like a medium black when squeezed out of the tube, but applied, it’s exactly as described: a sheer wash of black–it gives lips a gray-cast, takes my natural color and gives it a cooler tone, and then a glossy shine. Even though it’s rather sheer, there was some settling into lip lines. Urban Decay Oil Slick (DC, $22.00) is similar in its sheer, gray-tinge. MAC also had Blackware eons ago, which was similar. See comparison swatches.

Alone, the glossiness and subtle gray-ish tint seems to last around four hours on me. It has a very gel-like consistency, wasn’t tacky, and was comfortable to wear. The backbone of Lip Tars is really their versatility and mixability, so naturally, I layered this over a red lipstick (Marc Jacobs Showstopper), and it’s a quick way to instantly vamp-up your favorite lip color. It darkens, cools down, and adds a high-shine, glossy finish. Because it is sheerer, it doesn’t overwhelm the color. It does take careful blending to ensure an even layer of color.

This color will be available beginning Black Friday (the 29th) and will be added to the permanent range at occmakeup.com. It will also be available as a gift with purchase on $75+ orders placed between 11/29 and 12/2.

This could be a really useful product for darkening existing lip colors! At first i thought this is gonna be a fail cuz a black lipgloss seems silly, when i think of black i think of….opaque? But i totally see the usefulness now! Love how it looks over that red!

I feel like if this were a red and it applied this sheerly it would be ultra disappointing. As it stands, it’s definitely more wearable than I originally thought. I might like it to have a tad more color payoff though. This is just slightly different than a clear gloss.

Huh, that’s more sheer than I thought. But I’m actually down with that. I love to layer my MAC black lip glosses over colors to mute them, and they look so pretty!

I just got mine and you can totally build up to more of an effect. I recommend using another lip gel or OCC’s clear lip tar as a base/filler, though.

I’m sad this isn’t a bit more opaque, I know they have a fully opaque black lip tar , but this just seems a bit too sheer to be worth it. I have a Givenchy lipgloss like this that is ‘black’ with shimmer, also kind of pointless.

now, i do have oil slick, and even though i was thinking of the mac black lipstick you reviewed, i think i’d definitely be more into buying this. i would get a lot more use out of it! this looks awesome!!

I love a black lip gloss for layering over lipstick, I still have an old limited edition one from MAC, Glimmerglass in Blackware. It looks amazing layered over bright cool pinks too, it creates a really cool ombre effect. I am surprised at how sheer this is, though it could be good for those wanting to dip their toes into the look.

i think the black lip tar is awful !! i don’t even see much of anything really, i would rather just lightly put on black lipstick with a clear gloss, btw you are gorgeous !!! 🙂

This looks a lot like a black Kat von D lipgloss I had – and I loved it. It does look a lot more sheer than the Kat von D one though. I still think I’d love it!
