NYX Trickery, Risque, Scandalous Wicked Lippies Reviews, Photos, Swatches

NYX Wicked Lippies
NYX Wicked Lippies

NYX Wicked Lippie ($6.00 for 0.15 oz.) recently released, and the formula is described as “richly pigmented” and having a “dazzling metallic finish.” The best way for me to sum up the formula was: surprising, in a good way. Most of the shades are quite metallic, and most of them have good color payoff. The formula is creamy and slippery, yet many of the shades went on well without too much unevenness (though some were problematic, see Scandalous below). I expected they’d wear away quickly, due to the slippery nature of the texture, but they wore about average (four hours) or longer. I didn’t notice any scent or taste for most, though a couple had a very subtle waxy scent that I noticed in the tube but not on.

NYX Trickery Wicked Lippie ($6.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a dirty, olive green with fine gold shimmer for a frosted, metallic finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage that applied fairly well, but there was some unevenness. The texture was creamy, surprisingly slippery, so I was actually impressed it looked as good on as it did, given how emollient the formula was. I was even more surprised that it lasted for five hours; it seemed like a lot of the slickness disappeared within an hour, and once it did, it didn’t move readily. It was neither drying nor hydrating, and it was comfortable to wear. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Fragmented (LE, $18.00) was the closest I had, but it is a lot sheerer and lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NYX Risque Wicked Lippie ($6.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a rich, emerald green with metallic green shimmer. It had mostly opaque color coverage, and again, the formula felt incredibly creamy and emollient, yet it applied a lot better than expected. There was slight unevenness, but it wasn’t noticeable from a normal viewing distance. The color wore well for almost five hours, and it left a light stain behind. Dolce and Gabbana Smeraldo (LE, $33.00) is much darker, sheerer. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Chlorophyll (P, $18.00) is lighter, less shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NYX Scandalous Wicked Lippie ($6.00 for 0.15 oz.) is a brightened, medium-dark blue-teal with a glossy, pearly finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage, but the high slip in the formula made itself quite apparent with its uneven coverage. It slides around a lot, and it is very high maintenance to wear on its own. A lip liner is a must with this one, I’d say. Alone, it lasted for three and a half hours. NYX Pistachio (P, $6.00) is a lot lighter. Illamasqua Apocalips (P, $24.00) is more matte, darker, bluer. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Chlorophyll (P, $18.00) is greener. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

P.S. — If you don’t dig unconventional colors, that’s cool, but please don’t criticize or insult those who do. Not everyone loves red lipstick OR green lipstick but that’s why options exist 🙂

I love that you do these reviews for unusual colors! No, I won’t feel comfortable wearing them but I love seeing them. And hopefully they become more mainstream and we’re all wearing them.

Love the green on you!

Nicole Avatar

Agreed with both comments. I really don’t see myself in these colors. But, I love them on Christine! So, nice to see the review on a affordable product. Maybe a good time for us to step out of our comfort zone and work on bringing the trend in…not like it’s $25-50 down the drain.

I am dying of excitement over Risque. As soon as I saw it in the lineup I knew I was gonna have to get it – emerald green lips have been an obsession of mine since I saw the concept of Dolce & Gabbana’s Smeraldo. I remember being so devastated that it was so bad, so THIS – at such an incredible price point!! – is thrilling! Thanks for the review, I’ll be picking it up TODAY!

As an aside, I think Trickery is very flattering on you. 🙂

Melanie Avatar

Hey have you tried Target or Pharma Plus in Canada??? They carry NYX products. I don’t know where you are but I’ve purchased some NYX products there. Not sure if this line is available yet…

Aveline Avatar

There’s something so 90s Grunge about Trickery that I LOVE it! I know most people will run from a frosted olive green lipstick, but I fee like a lot of people could pull this off really well.

Johanna Avatar

Yes! When I opened up your site this morning I was hoping some of the Wicked line would be here! I am OBSESSED with Trickery and will definitely be picking it up. I was hoping for a darker/more hunter green with Risque – the swatch on your arm definitely looks dark green but on your lips I get a more bluish tint – what do you think of it in person? Can’t wait for you to review the Blue/purple shades!!!

MC Avatar

Risque looks like the perfect dupe of Melt Blow -even if it’s not matte- that I have been looking for for such a long time (the shipping cost keeps me away from buying it from melt) so… yeah! 🙂

JCSanDiego Avatar

I loved your swatch of Trickery. I’m tempted to buy it, but I wanted to ask if you’ve seen other swatches of it, and if their color payoff is consistent with yours? I love how it comes across a bit more brown with your swatches, but on the NYX website, it actually looks more like its olive green description.

xamyx Avatar

I had no interest in Trickery, until I saw it actually applied… Although your coloring is so different than mine, seeing lip products actually *applied* really does help, and of course is well appreciated!

Nikki Avatar

Gosh. In all honesty, NYX lipsticks have never agreed with me (their round l/s formula was oddly drying and irritating on my lips?), but some of these offbeat colors were tempting me. Given Scandalous’s formula, I guess I’ll just dupe it by mixing Lip Tars. 🙂

Helene Avatar

I must say I didn’t find Trickery unconventional. I think it’s quite wearable, and I am so going to get it, not sure whare I can buy NYX, but I am going to Google it today. I also want Risque, maybe not such an easy wear, but it’s gorgeous.
I look forward to the reviews of the rest of this collection of glamorous unconventional lipsticks.
Real pity about Scandalous, I wasn’t going to buy it as I have a really hard time with blue, but it’s a very pretty lipstick.
You manage to look good in all colours, Christine! How do you do it?

Helene Avatar

LOL! Turns out we have a NYX store not far from where I live. I had no idea, (hangs head in shame).
It doesn’t seem like the Wicked line has come yet, I think I’ll go to the store to ask this week, or call them. What fun!
On the subject, we now have Tom Ford here, I noticed when looking through a magazine today.
A big YAY!

Christine Avatar

It’s definitely the least unconventional of the set – more “wearable” (sometimes, I don’t like that term at all!).

Smile 🙂 That’s the secret. If you look uncomfortable with it on, that’s how you’ll come across! If you’re confident and rock it, that’ll come across too!

Helene Avatar

True. Any colour on a lipstick is wearable, of course as it is in a formula made to be worn.
I meant easy to try on if you are just going to try an unconventional colour.
I once got yelled at by a person, an older woman I worked with, because I had a blueish purple lipstick. It was a lovely colour, I thought. She claimed I looked as if I was about to die of asfyxiation. I didn’t care and kept wearing it 🙂

Emme Avatar

Can I just say how awesome Trickery looks with your skin tone? It makes your whole face brighter, your teeth whiter, wow, you can def. pull this off!

Rachel R. Avatar

I think most of them are better than I expected. The couple that weren’t are still workable, they just need liner and maybe a bit of primer. I’m looking forward to reading what you think of the other colors.

Lotus Avatar

Wow! That one dupe is… Just not close at all. You could totally rock the bronze one with a bronze evening gown. You know, everyday attire. When I was young, I had to create my own lipsticks in these kinds of colors. The youth can get it so easy now. That’s fun! 🙂 I did have an olive green gloss that worked really well on my lips. It was a Merle Norman sample. It looked natural. Go figure. 😐

beka Avatar

i liked the darker blues and purples from your earlier swatches of these. i hope these are better than scandalous. thanks for adding the comment about opinions. olive green lipstick may not be my thing, but i’m sure some will love it!

Christine Avatar

95% of the time, everyone is really great and respectful, but sometimes I like to put that p.s. out there as a reminder. I think it’s really important that everyone should be able to enjoy what they like without feeling like they have to defend their choices 😀

indayluvs Avatar

These are so beautiful, lately I’ve been really drawn to unconventional lip colors. Can’t wait to see the rest of the line. Your skin looks absolutely amazing! May I ask what blush you’re wearing in these photos Christine? Didn’t see it in The Makeup Look and it’s a lovely color!

Ty Avatar

Christine, I have to ask what blush/bronzer you are wearing? The combination of blush and lip colour is very flattering. You look amazing in all these colours and I think your blush is really helping to make sure these unusual colours don’t wash you out.

Stephanie Avatar

I’m so glad Risque got a good review! It was the one that I really wanted from the collection and its on the way to me right now along with Betrayal and Sinful. I heard if you use the NYX lip primer first, because its a little drier, it helps eliminate some of that slip so you don’t have that unevenness and makes them last way longer.

robyn Avatar

I think a clear lipliner or if you have a lip safe blue eyeliner would also work. (I’ve certainly seen had a worse blue from a budget UK brand and that even helped with that one and it was really shoddy!)

danza Avatar

Trickery looks to be surprisingly wearable!!! I love finding great lipsticks at this range – I just bought a $3 Maybelline called Plum Perfect and I am convinced it is a dupe of Rebel 😀

Lulle Avatar

I absolutely love Trickery and Risque! I just showed them to my husband and he suggested an “inversion” look with a bright red (or any other color typically used on lips) on the eyes and Risque on the lips 🙂

Tatiana Avatar

wow! Risque is beautiful! and Trickery doesn’t look green in the pictures. It reminds me of a golden YSL lipstick I used to love in the ninities.

Alex Avatar

Oh, I’ll definitely be buying Trickery and yes I will be wearing it at daytime! I remember buying Playland lipstick from MAC this summer, wondering: Why did I just buy this? And after I wore it with the yellow gloss (from the same collection but forgot the name :P), I never looked back. I think lipstick can be life changing! I’ll probably end up buying all of the colors from this collection because who doesn’t need a blue/emerald/copper/silver lipstick in their life huh? 😉

Nubian_Queen15 Avatar

Trickery looks gorgeous. I have a very deep skin tone, and very dark lips. I think this color would compliment my skin tone very nicely.

Sylirael Avatar

Ahh, I want Trickery and Risque so badly! Risque because I’ve always wanted an emerald lipstick, and the price point on these is incredible (not to mention the good score, yay!), and Trickery because no self respecting lipstick addict should be without the sole example (to my knowledge) of a khaki lipstick (even if you don’t wear it every day) 😉

So excited about these lipsticks!

Sylirael Avatar

Nyx is actually OK, I think. I can probably YouShop it, and of course the prices are good. I think I even have a voucher somewhere for completing a survey!

Technically I also have the wonderful Jaa 😉 (She hooked me up with the Tarte Rainforest/snake palette!)

Fran Avatar

Christine, I think Trickery looks shockingly good on you! I’m hoping to find at least one of these that I feel like I can try with my NW20-ish complexion, maybe a blue or purple. I’m a bit timid about unconventional colors, but I do wear purple lipsticks.

Fay. H. (@FayFey) Avatar

For another post idea, it’ll be nice if you do a comparison series by layering a standard red lipstick over each Nyx coloured lipstick. It’ll give us an idea how the layered finish would look like. Thanks 🙂
