NARS pastorale, Milos, Amarapura Nail Polishes
Today, I have three of the more metallic-finished polishes from the newly reformulated NARS Nail Polish ($20.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.), which will have a total of 43 permanent shades. The official launch is July 15th, and both the formula and the brush have been changed. According to the brand, the formula is supposed to “improve wear and strengthen nails” with a “flexible, high gloss finish.” In the past, I’ve experienced really strong, long-wear (up to ten days with minor tip wear; after seven, tip wear appears very minor). I tested five shades–Thasos, Elbrus, Obscura, Pastorale, and Zakynthos–for wear, and they were fairly consistent with minor tip wear after seven days but no chipping (no top or base coats were used). I really liked the brush, as it wasn’t overly wide; I could still apply polish to my pinky nail (which is my narrowest nail) without getting polish all along the cuticle/skin along the nail. Most shades dried down faster than average, and generally, they applied well without streaking, bubbling, or pooling along the edges with good color coverage.
NARS Pastorale Nail Polish ($20.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “rose gold.” It’s a light-medium, pinky-copper–it really is rose gold–with a metallic, foil-like finish. There were almost no visible brush strokes, as nearly all of them disappeared once the polish dried. The color was opaque after two coats of polish, and it dried quickly. This shade lasted for seven days with minor tip wear on me. Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Charm (112) (P, $18.00) is more shimmery, more orange. Estee Lauder Shimmering Bronze (LE, $20.00) is darker. Deborah Lippmann Glamorous Life (LE, $19.00) is lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
NARS Milos Nail Polish ($20.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “rich gold.” It’s a shimmery, buttery yellow gold with a frosted finish. It was mostly opaque after two coats, and there were very subtle brush strokes–I really only noticed them at angles. The consistency was on the thicker side, and the drying time was longer than any of the other shades I tried, and it was unforgiving if you applied a second coat too quickly. Zoya Kerry (P, $9.00) is yellower. MAC Immortal Gold (LE, $16.00) is darker, cooler-toned. Dior Or Divin (LE, $24.00) is more orange. Chanel Gold Fingers (LE, $27.00) is darker, yellower. ORLY Flare (P, $5.00) is darker. China Glaze Champagne Bubbles (LE, $7.50) is darker, yellower. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
NARS Amarapura Nail Polish ($20.00 for 0.50 fl. oz.) is described as a “silver chrome.” It’s a brightened, medium silver foil with a metallic, foil-like finish. It really looks a lot like tinfoil on the nails! It was fully opaque after two coats, though it was almost opaque after a single coat. The consistency is slightly thin but not problematic, and there are very slight visible brush strokes but most of them disappeared after the polish dried down. Cult Nails Lethal (LE, $12.00) is more shimmery. China Glaze Cheers to You (LE, $7.50) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Not a huge fan of metallic nails or maybe just bored; particularly silver and gold. The rose gold is pretty, but I won’t be all over it.
Silver and gold are probably shades so readily duped that going for a $20 version is a hard sell!
Would you say Pastorale is similar to Color Club Cosmic Fate in terms of base colour?
Cosmic Fate is warmer – less pink! Then the holographic shimmer makes it quite different.
Pastorale is so pretty… <3 <3
That was my top pick from these!
I’m loving all of these simple colors!
Yay! 🙂 Which of these three was your favorite?
Wow, I really like Pastorale. But $20 is a lot for nail polish.
It is pricey!
Pastorale is pretty 🙂 I liked it from the promo pics, so I’m glad it has lived up to its promise! These are all impressively non-brushstrokey for metallics, although I think those recent MAC ones may just pip some of them 😉
And those would be cheaper!
I love the first one!
Yay!
I thought I could avoid the NARS nail polishes because I’m an avid nail polish collector and figured I had almost all of these shades in my collection already. But Pastorale isn’t as similar to Essie Penny Talk as I first believed and if they formula is good then I’m gonna need it.
Thanks for testing and swatching all these for us! I know nail swatches can take quite a bit of time.
No problem, Arielle! Always happy to help! 🙂
OMG, you’re telling me! It’s an all-day affair. I usually do work while everything’s drying and try not to mess anything up while typing, lol!
I normally don’t like metallic, but the first one is really nice.
It’s a very interesting effect!
The rose gold is beautiful, but I feel it can be easily duped…
Any dupe ideas?
Essie’s Penny Talk was the first thing that came to mind…though it might be slightly darker. 🙂
I am a big fan of rose gold, so I love Pastorale! I can’t wait to check out these polishes in person, especially Thasos and Pastorale :).
Those were two of my fave shades!
Pastorale and Amarapura need to be mine!
Enjoy! 🙂
A good dupe for Pastorale is Essie Penny Talk. It’s only $8.50!
Thanks for the suggestion!
Amarapura looks absolutely wonderful on you. I may check it out but not buy it. Silver is something I might not be able to carry..
Thank you, Gauri!
I like all three, but the rose gold is my favorite.
I’m still obsessed with rose gold!
Pretty!
Any catch your eye in particular?
These have been catching my eye where ever someone is reviewing them. Pastorale is especially speaking to me. There’s nothing like a nice rose gold!
I love that it really looks like rose gold – not copper!
…is it just me, or is Pastorale, like, irresponsibly freakin’ lovely? 😮
It IS! I think it’s because there’s a lot of pink in it, not just coppery tones!
Pastorale is nice. I like rose golds
Me too!
Pastorale looks a lot like chanel rose moire.
I’ll have to check that out!
Woah! That silver chrome is intense! Love it!
It is! Very foil-y.
These look soo beautiful! I’m looking forward to Pastorale. Thank you for swatching and sharing with us!
My pleasure, Livia!
Pastorale is just gorgeous. I have golds, I have silvers, I do not have anything like Pastorale. I think I will have to start saving for a big nail polish haul.
Pastorale is really lovely! I like how pink it is.
