NARS Outremer Eyeshadow Review, Photos, Swatches

NARS Outremer Eyeshadow

NARS Outremer Eyeshadow

NARS Outremer Eyeshadow ($25.00 for 0.07 oz.) is described as a “bright true blue,” but it leans a little indigo–there is a touch of purple there. It’s not quite a true blue. It has a matte finish, and it definitely qualifies as an intense shade of blue. MAC Cobalt is a touch more indigo (and it has even more texture issues), while MAC Atlantic Blue is a touch bluer. Inglot #388 is very similar but has a smoother, silkier texture. Make Up For Ever #159 is bluer.

Outremer has some initial texture issues–it is dry, almost chalky, and stiff to work with when swatched. It’s easier to use when applied with a brush to the lid, but the drier texture requires more finesse when blending, because it’s not as blendable as a smoother, silkier matte would be. For me, it doesn’t work well applied without a base (as NARS eyeshadows are touted to be long-wearing and crease-resistant when worn)–it’s was somewhat uneven and difficult to diffuse. It works infinitely better over a base, and to be honest, I’ve never found a matte in this particular hue that’s a dream to work with (Inglot #388 being the closest). At least it gives brands a challenge, I suppose…

Again, this is a shade that applies better than it seems when first swatched. I wouldn’t rely on the results of a swatch definitively–trying it on is really the way to go. It ended up being much like NARS Daphne (but it did have a softer texture in comparison), which looked pitiful swatched but lovelier in practice.

It is a fussier eyeshadow, though, and it tends to live up to the stubborn reputation of mattes rather than disprove it.  One of my favorite eyeshadows is MAC Atlantic Blue (which is similar but a touch bluer), and it has a lot of the same downsides as Outremer–and for me, the resulting color makes the effort worth it, but it is purely a personal preference and doesn’t minimize the shortcomings in texture of this product overall.

I LOVE this!! The gorgeousness of the color will most certainly make up for the texture. Could you possibly do a look with this in the future, so we can see what you mean when you say it applies better than swatched?

Hey Christine! Plz answer this question for me! Are the Mac cinematics brush sets going to be available at Mac stores soon or are they only nordstrom exclusives? Btw I really appreciate the hard work u put into this site! I’m sure everyone salutes you for that 🙂

Wow, this looks incredible in the packaging (the color is blinding me haha!), but not so great in the swatch! Disappointing considering how pricy Nars shadows are.

Love this color. Despite its fussiness in texture and application, this is one product that I might be willing to fight with to make it work. Need that bright blue!!!!!

This color and texture reminds me of Sugar Pill’s Royal Sugar. Outremer here doesnt have the sparlies like Royal Sugar but the texture and the difficult application reminds me of such. Used to be such a Nars fan…but not anymore.

It is stunning in the pan! But I feel that Nars products in general (except the blushes) are never really amazing, especially the eyeshadows.

It’s a beautiful color but it’s pretty apparent in the swatch that it’s dry and chunky :/ Plus, I only spend that much money on colors I’ll constantly use. I can’t see myself wearing bright blue everyday.

Sooo beautiful…. I didnt like Daphne’s texture either though. I dont see this on the Sephora site yet but I have Inglot 388- think its about time to open it!

Passing on this as I already have Atlantic Blue. I wear bright jewel blues a lot in the fall (with dark browns, greens and plums) but not willing to pay $23 for a color so close to what I already own in my stash.

You should try it wet. I was not a fan of it or Daphne, but WET, they are both soooo magical! Both of them make beautiful eyeliners, and they stay on like a gel liner.

The color is gorgeous and I don’t have anything like it, so even with the tricky texture this would almost be worth it for me. I’m still not sure though…

Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics’ “Ultramarine Blue” is an exact dupe of this and it’s only $12. It’s a pigment so it applies better, too.

I expect a lot from NARS..and this is very disappointing. When I first saw the color in the pan it looked GORGEOUS and I thought wow this is a great color. But looking at the swatch and how unpigmented it is is very disappointing.

OMG the shade looks so sensational in the pan!!! I’m not sure it’ll look as great on the eyelids, but this one’s worth buying just for how pretty it is

This is sooo beautiful!! The texture reminds me of NARS Daphne, which can be a little difficult to apply. (It’s just a matter of balancing the amount of product on the proper brush.)

This will be a definite purchase!
