NARS Night Series Eyeliner ($24.00 for 0.02 oz.) is a new set of eyeliners available in four shades debuting this fall. They are being added to the permanent range, and they are black-based with colored pearl. The consistency of these was stiff, so they did tug somewhat at the lash line and didn’t apply with rich, opaque color coverage. They required three to four passes if you wanted a really solid line, though I found short, back-and-forth strokes to be the best application method for these due to the stiffer consistency. All four wore up to ten hours on me before I saw some very slight fading and a little migration to the outer corner of the lid, but they were quite long-wearing once they were on. At the price, I’d recommend checking out NARS Eye Paints, as it is a better formula with far more product (and $1 more), and three shades are similar to three of the pencils here.

NARS Night Bird Night Series Eyeliner ($24.00 for 0.02 oz.) is described as a “black with purple pearl.” It’s a medium-dark black base with violet and plum shimmer. It was sheer and more of a faded, warm-toned black with a couple of bits of purple shimmer here and there in one stroke. When I tried to layer it, I was able to semi-opaque color, but it didn’t layer evenly, so it doesn’t give a really rich, solid line of color. Urban Decay Delinquent (P, $19.00) is very similar. MAC Permaplum (P, $16.00) is less shimmery. MAC Designer Purple (P, $15.00) is lighter. NARS Tatar (P, $25.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NARS Night Clubbing Night Series Eyeliner ($24.00 for 0.02 oz.) is described as a “black with gold pearl.” It’s a softened, medium black with warm undertones and a very, very slight gold shimmer (which is almost imperceptible once applied). It was semi-sheer when applied in one stroke, but this one built up better and layered to mostly opaque coverage. MAC Local Wares (LE, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Avenue (LE, $16.00) is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NARS Night Flight Night Series Eyeliner ($24.00 for 0.02 oz.) is described as a “black with cobalt blue pearl.” It’s a dark black with navy blue shimmer, so it looks more like a pearly, blackened blue. It was semi-sheer when applied in one go, and then it built up to mostly opaque coverage, though it was a bit uneven. Buxom Pick Me Up (P, $17.00) is lighter. MAC Night Trail (P, $20.00) is similar. MAC Blue Stripe (LE, $16.00) is is lighter. NARS Ubangi (P, $25.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

NARS Night Porter Night Series Eyeliner ($24.00 for 0.02 oz.) is described as a “black with green pearl.” It’s a medium-dark black with subtle warm undertones and cool-toned, emerald green shimmer. It had sheer color payoff in one stroke, and it was buildable to semi-opaque color coverage that was uneven. MAC Devotion (P, $20.00) is lighter. Urban Decay Loaded (P, $19.00) is darker. MAC Dark Envy (LE, $16.00) is lighter, less sparkly. NARS Snake Eyes (P, $25.00) is very similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

How can a brand like Nars produce such a poor quality product like this and then still put it out for the public? This should have been yankee from production before it started being mass produced!

Can’t say I’m surprised. Got the night series palette (mini, thank god….)fever+ clubbing look exactly the same, as do porter + flight + WHATEVER others in another palette. At least star + fairy+snow+ rider look something other than straight black. (‘Cause they’re not black!)Minimal differences on arm swatches, but drop dead same on eyes. Had similar problems w/ UD black-based shades in Vice palettes. Naked 3: didn’t try blackheart for ~ a month, ’cause I was sure it’s be yet another presumably ‘colored’ black….and was heartily surprised at what a great liner or smoky shade it is. Nars night series have been my greatest disappointment of every Nars product I ever tried. But poor e/l in a reasonably good collection isn’t too bad. Liking both lips… and have seldom met a Nars blush I didn’t like. At least you can get them, unlike MUG! But great job, Marlena + Co!

Makes me wonder why they, not only NARS, many brands do, release such substandard products. These liners could have been so good. Pity.
It’s so good to get an honest opinion so I don’t come home just to discover a product is basically unusable. One of the worst things I know when it comes to eyeliners is tugging.

I have Nars Snake Eyes and it’s a cream, not a pencil (there seems to be a typo or coding error in the reviews) and I’d love similar in pencil form but, to be honest, I think Sephora’s own Galaxy Girl (which they describe as black blue but to me, it looks more green) is a much better choice than Night Porter. And Tango Night is probably a perfectly acceptable dupe (and better quality or at least a lower price tag) for Night Bird. I suppose the one advantage the Nars pencils have is that they’re twist up (I hate sharpening pencils but almost all my faves need sharpening).

Tch Tch Nars! They really don’t have an excuse to be producing products that can get a D rating from you , when they have SO much competition from every other brand in this department! I mean even the Sephora eyeliners are pretty amazing @ half the price. Boooo lol.

I was going to say, I thought it was funny that the shades were the same as some of the eye paints, although obviously there’s definitely room for people to prefer a pencil over a gel pot (technically I usually use pencils myself). If you’re going to do that, though, the pencil dupes need to be, you know, just as good as the gel pots. Otherwise you’re just introducing negative redundancy into your collection… 🙁

Night Porter the eyeshadow is sooooo beautiful.
It would probably be a better option to apply the shadow wet using a brush to achieve an eyeliner look than to use their pencil equivalents.

Didn’t think I’d see the day NARS put out a bunch of duds. You just saved me >$38 Christine (at least that’s what the Larger Than Life Long Wear eyeliner costs here in Oz)

i think it’s exciting that they made these colors into eyeliners, but i’m sad to see how crappy they are! they’re some of my favorite eyeshadows, but these are so meh

i’m honestly surprised.. i just bought the night porter eyeliner and it went on smooth, didn’t tug on my lid, was creamy and applied beautifully! :\
