NARS Final Cut Collection
NARS Final Cut Satin Lip Pencils ($25.00 for 0.07 oz. each) includes four limited edition shades that are exclusive to Nordstrom (in the U.S.; Holt Renfrew in Canada, Selfridges in the UK). If you like Satin Lip Pencils, I see no reason why you wouldn’t like the formula of these, with the exception of Stourhead, which will require significant prep work, patience, and reduced expectations. They’re nicely pigmented, fairly comfortable to wear, and have a good wear time. I wish they were as hydrating as they claim, but they’re not drying at least. I wish that there was a bigger difference between Descanso and Torres del Paine, as they look surprisingly similar for shades included in a single collection.
Descanso is described as a “tea rose.” It’s a light-medium, rosy peach with a satin finish and warm undertones. It looks pinker on the lips than it does when swatched on the skin. The consistency was lightweight, creamy, and easy to apply. It had opaque color coverage, didn’t settle into lip lines, and was even. It lasted four hours on me and was lightly hydrating. Chanel Interlude (P, $34.00) is slightly darker. NARS Dolce Vita (P, $25.00) is darker, more matte. NARS Montego Bay (P, $26.00) is darker. MAC Reel Sexy (LE, $16.00) is slightly lighter, pinker. MAC Razzledazzler (LE, $16.00) is a touch warmer. Estee Lauder Naked (LE, $25.00) is more matte, lighter. Burberry Devon Sunset (P, $30.00) is glossier. See comparison swatches.
Stourhead is described as a “pale lavender pink.” It’s a pale, pink-tinted lavender with a satin finish and cool, blue undertones. The consistency wasn’t dry as I feared, and it felt lightweight, creamy, and seemed easy enough to apply, but it was difficult to apply evenly. It also settled into lip lines slightly from the initial application, but after an hour and a half of wear, it really migrated into all of my lip lines and looked a little like dry, cracked lips. It lasted two and a half hours on me. It had semi-opaque color coverage but was not as pigmented as the other three. Chanel Radieuse (217) (LE, $34.00) is warmer, darker. MAC Beauty (LE, $16.00) is lighter, less pink. MAC Raspberry Swirl (LE, $16.00) is darker, cooler-toned. Chanel Candeur (P, $34.00) is similar. Bobbi Brown Orchid Pink (LE, $23.00) is pinker. Torres del Paine is described as a “peach coral.” It’s a light-medium peachy orange with a satin finish. It had mostly opaque color coverage, and the consistency was lightly creamy and applied evenly. The color wore well for four hours and was slightly moisturizing. And no, your eyes aren’t deceiving you, this is strangely similar to Descanso; this shade being slightly warmer with no rosy tone to it. MAC Touche (LE, $20.00) is sheerer. MAC Gotta Dash! (P, $16.00) is very similar. Edward Bess Forbidden Flower (P, $32.00) is slightly lighter. Burberry Pink Apricot (301) (P, $30.00) is more muted, matte. NARS Lodhi (P, $25.00) is darker, brighter. MAC Style Surge (P, $22.00) is darker. See comparison swatches.
Villa Lante is described as a “cherry blossom pink.” It’s a cool-toned, medium pink with strong, blue undertones and a satin finish. This shade had mostly opaque color coverage, and it applied evenly for the most part. It lasted for four hours on me and was neither drying nor hydrating. NARS Goodbye Emmanuelle (LE, $26.00) is brighter, darker. MAC Steady Going (LE, $16.00) is more matte but very close in color. MAC Playtime (LE, $16.00) is brighter. Urban Decay Obsessed (P, $22.00) is less blue-based. MAC Raspberry Swirl (LE, $16.00) is lighter. MAC Divine Choice (P, $22.00) is very similar. MAC Pink Nouveau (P, $16.00) is cooler-toned. Is Descanso at all similar to the color of MAC Ever Hip, Cut a Caper, or Flamingo?
Ever Hip & Cut a Caper are pinker, not quite as warm-toned. Flamingo is more muted!
I guess I am not the only who who skips a hearbeat whenever encountering something that could, just could, be a dupe of Ever Hip!
Even though Stourhead didn’t really apply perfectly, I’m still impressed by how smooth it *looks* given the colour that it is! It’s such a shame that the long term wear is so poor 🙁
Descanso, on the other hand, is something I’m gonna have to check out – it looks *stunning* on you here, Christine, like the perfect peachy ‘MLBB’ shade! 😀
It’s tough – I can’t recall anything off the top of my head that’s similar to Stourhead that really applies a lot better. Those shades tend to be like that!
With the exception of Stourhead these all look lovely!

The only shade I’m not fond of is Stourhead, but the rest are really cute! So far for this spring NARS has released some nice stuff!

Christine, I’ve always been curious – when you do two lip swatches in a row is the first photo the product immediately applied and the second after it sets?
One is with direct light, one is with diffused/indirect light – like “best lighting ever” (most light) and then shade/office lighting.
All of them except Stourhead look great. It’s a pity that there’s that odd one out . . .
It’s a tough color to do well, especially in terms of application, but I wished NARS could have done it!
Oh! I am loving the shade Torres Del Paine an villa lante 🙂 But I am pretty sure both will wash me out though !

I agree with you Christine! Torres del Paine and Descanso are way too similar! They should have included maybe a warmer, dark pink or a cooler, dark pink instead of 2 colors that almost look exactly the same!
Yup! If it just happened to be that way say with one LE shade and something else in the permanent range, it would have been like, “OK, these are very similar,” but not really leave you scratching your head. In the same collection, I think they should have been further apart!

For selfish reasons, I actually like that Nars launched Descanso and Torres del Paine at the same time. Even though they look similar, I like my lighter lip colors with a little rose into it, so Descanso is a buy for me while I wouldn’t consider buying Torres del Paine.

Seems like i’m the only one, but i absolutely love Stourhead ! I’ve been looking for a lipstick with this color for years and never quite found the perfect shade.. I really like Descanso as well 🙂
I think a lot of the lack of love is more to do with the way it applies than the color itself! 🙂
You really do look stunning in those peachy/coral lip shades! The first and last seem super similar, but at least both are nice shades that performed well. Also, your skin! What are you using on your face here? Your face just looks so radiant and smooth!

Its really too bad for the Nars Spring collection, that both the lavender in the gloss and pencil were the poorest in review. If I had to choose between the two products, I would pick the pencil cause seems like better color payoff.

Hi Christine, thanks so much for your review! I wanted to ask for your advice as I just bought the Descanso lip pencil but am having trouble with it. Unfortunately on me, the first time, I applied it over a bare lip, and it really emphasized and settled in my lip lines. Later today, I applied lip balm first before applying the lip pencil, and that seemed to help things, but it’s still settling in my lip lines a bit. I’ve only had this happen with Burberry Lip Covers, but do not have this issue with other lip products I use (which are admittedly usually moisturizing lipsticks or lipglosses). Would love any tips or advice you might have on how to avoid this issue!

The only thing I could think of would be using a lip pencil or lip primer – basically something that will “fill” any lines in advance, so it’s not the lipstick that sinks in!
Also, you could try adding a lip balm to them, since more moisturizing (which I assume are also more emollient/slippery) wear better on you!

I don’t, more because it’s not a product I use (like ever), but I know a lot of readers like MAC’s Prep + Prime Lip! In my case, I’d probably use a clear lip pencil if I wanted something that didn’t have color but had some of that waxiness/silicone feel of a smoothing primer!
