NARS Spring 2013: Cythere

NARS Cythere Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil ($24.00 for 0.09 oz.) is described as a “soft metallic rose.” It’s a beige-brown with a rainbow shimmer. I’m not sure where NARS is seeing rose, as it yields a very metallic champagne/beige/brown kind of color both swatched and applied. The shimmer reminded me a lot of the kind found in Illamasqua Opulent, but the color of Opulent isn’t like Cythere. MAC Straight to the Head has a lot more glitter. Lancome Amande is browner.

The Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil is supposed to provide hydration, shine, and feel comfortable to wear. Cythere has mostly opaque color coverage along with a high-shine finish; not super glossy but very metallic and reflective. The texture is lightly tacky, creamy, and on the thicker side. This shade lasted four hours on me, and it was lightly hydrating while I wore it.  The color applied evenly and smoothly, but sharpening this formula can be a bit of a pain, as it is a very soft, creamy consistency that can get stuck and smeared all over your sharpener.  It’s better to put the pencil in the freezer for a bit, then sharpen, to minimize mess and waste.

I’m really loving this. I have no idea why, as it’s not my usual type of shade, but something about this one makes me say “this must be mine!”

xamyx Avatar

*Maybe* if it were sheered out; otherwise, it may not be “stable” enough (I’m just offering conjecture, based on another NARS lip pencil I have).

The shade reminds me of a lighter, less warm version of Mac’s “Heroine” (the version that was released with Wonder Woman, not the purple one). I think it just looks like it has a similar metallic quality to it.

Okay, this is officially added to my list. I actually thought I would get through the Spring collections without buying anything, then NARS comes along… Seriously, NARS is my “kryptonite”.

This is the kind of color that looks fabulous on some women and The Pits on me. Back in the day I tried to make MAC’s Plastique work and oh just… No. Rose gold is not the color for me, no metallic works for me really. I need a matte or satin. Plus personal style really figures in hugely- if I was more 70’s or 80’s I could completely play it off. I am way more 40’s/50’s and this fit like Mike Tyson’s face tattoo on me. And no I am not saying this color is dated, more like * I* am.

For what it’s worth, I don’t think knowing what looks good on you and having your own sense of style is dating yourself. To me, what looks dated is when women of a certain age (I am 46) try to go back down that road they have been before, makeup wise and it seldom works. Following trends simply because that is what is happening now makes little sense to me if the colors involved aren’t flattering to oneself. I am still learning but I have a fairly good idea of what I can’t wear anymore and for the most part I stick to it. So bravo to you for sticking to your guns. I bet you look fabulous!

Love the color on the swatches,on your lips the second photo appears much whiter than the first. I’m a sucker for all browns, but a white finish will wash me out. Which pic do you think is more accurate? I may have to see for myself!

Thanks…this pencil is so pretty but oh baby is one of my favs so I wanted to make sure they arent dupes…I think i will pick this up, and the blush too!

The concept of packaging this in a pencil that needs sharpening seems beyond stupid. What a hassle to inflict on women! Whether you chill this or not before sharpening, I’m thinking there would be a lot of mess and, worse, a lot of waste. Why not package it in a tube? Or in a pot?

I personally own a number of the velvet gloss pencils by Nars (I have a love affair with Mexican Rose) and the sharpening is a pretty clean process if you use their sharpener. I haven’t had any problems at all and like that it is in a pencil form so that you can apply it with ease as opposed to a tube of lipstick which I always use a lip brush with.

This is the one thing from the nars spring collection I feel like I really NEED. As much as you can NEED yet another lipstick, anyway….lol. so so pretty, I love the metallic sparkle

Oh that’s very interesting–I thought it would be a very thin, balmy wash of color but in those swatches, you can really see the creaminess/thickness of the product. I imagine though that when applying straight to your lips, you go through a lot of product since it IS so thick? Did you apply with a brush, Christine??

This shade and others close to it are quite flattering on your skintone, but I don’t think they would be as such on many others, including mine.
