NARS An Abnormal Female Lip Pencil Coffret

NARS An Abnormal Female Lip Pencil Coffret ($65.00 for 0.24 oz.) includes three full-sized Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, and all three are shades that are part of the permanent range, so if you like one, you may find it better to just pick up the one you want. Of all the packaging in the collection, this is the most unique, and it is more unique relative to other special edition packaging I’ve seen from brands in general. The Velvet Matte Lip Pencil formula can be drying, and it doesn’t always have the pigmentation expected, which are its major downsides.

413 BLKR is a bright, medium-dark fuchsia pink with lighter iridescent fuchsia shimmer over a matte finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation that covered evenly, but the texture of the pencil was a smidgen dry compared to the other two shades. It didn’t tug much, but it seemed to take longer to apply. The color wore well for five and a half hours, and it left behind a stain, but it was somewhat drying after two hours of wear. Too Faced Troublemaker (P, $22.00) is less shimmery (95% similar). Urban Decay Menace (P, $18.00) is less shimmery, darker (95% similar). MAC Dance Off, Pants Off (LE, $19.00) is glossier (95% similar). Illamasqua Atomic (P, $24.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Guerlain Cherry Cape (067) (P, $32.00) is less shimmery, more muted, glossier (90% similar). Chanel La Romanesque (50) (DC, $45.00) is less shimmery, warmer, glossier (90% similar). Milani Raspberry Rush (P, $5.49) is more shimmery (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Logan (P, $36.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). Guerlain Neon Pumps (065) (P, $32.00) is less shimmery, glossier (90% similar). NARS Janet (P, $34.00) is more shimmery, darker, brighter (90% similar). Chanel Fuchsia (P, $37.00) is less shimmery, glossier (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Cooper (LE, $36.00) is brighter (90% similar). Bobbi Brown Hot Berry (P, $28.00) is brighter, glossier (90% similar). MAC Hollywood Cerise (LE, $19.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Francesco (LE, $36.00) is brighter, glossier (90% similar). Urban Decay Firebird (LE, $18.00) is brighter, glossier (90% similar). MAC Pink, You Think? (P, $19.00) is glossier (90% similar). MAC Full Fuchsia (P, $19.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). ColourPop The Rabbit (P, $7.00) is brighter (90% similar). ColourPop Lock Diary (LE, $7.00) is less shimmery, darker (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. See comparison swatches / view dupes side-by-side.

Sex Machine is a dusty, medium-dark pinky-plum with neutral-to-warm undertones and a soft shimmer over a mostly matte finish. It was semi-opaque with a soft, velvety consistency that glided on. The texture is thin and feels a little clingy. On me, the color lasted for four hours but was drying. MAC Mehr (P, $19.00) is darker, glossier (90% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Anderson (P, $36.00) is less shimmery, lighter (90% similar). Bite Beauty Fig (DC, $26.00) is less shimmery, lighter, warmer (85% similar). MAC Brave (P, $19.00) is less shimmery, brighter (90% similar). Urban Decay Naked (P, $18.00) is less shimmery, warmer (90% similar). Bite Beauty Pastille (DC, $24.00) is more shimmery, warmer (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Indian Rose (P, $57.00) is darker, warmer, glossier (90% similar). Flower Beauty Petal Kiss (P, $6.98) is lighter (95% similar). Givenchy Nude Guipure (106) (P, $36.00) is glossier (95% similar). KVD Beauty Lovecraft (DC, $21.00) is cooler (90% similar). Tarte Flashy (LE, $24.00) is warmer (85% similar). Make Up For Ever #4 (DC, $19.00) is darker (85% similar). Dolce and Gabbana Petal (135) (P, $33.00) is lighter, glossier (90% similar). NARS Catfight (DC, $28.00) is lighter, cooler (85% similar). Burberry Nude Rose (No. 405) (P, $35.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). Burberry Peony Rose (302) (P, $35.00) is darker, warmer (85% similar). MAC Boca (LE, $19.00) is glossier (90% similar). Givenchy Nude Guipure (106) (P, $36.00) is glossier (95% similar). Tom Ford Beauty Pussycat (04) (P, $55.00) is less shimmery, brighter (85% similar). NARS Anita (P, $34.00) is warmer (85% similar). Top 20 dupes listed, see the rest. Dragon Girl is a rich, bright, medium-dark red with cool, blue undertones and a matte finish. It had semi-opaque color payoff with a very smooth, even application as the texture was velvety and soft in the pencil. On me, the color wears for a solid six hours and feels lightly drying after four hours of wear. ColourPop Honey Pie (LE, $6.50) is darker (95% similar). Revlon Bread Winner (P, $12.39) is brighter, warmer (90% similar). Guerlain Berry Pink (721) (P, $36.00) is darker, warmer (90% similar). Revlon First Class (P, $12.39) is darker, cooler (90% similar). Guerlain #518 (P, $33.00) is lighter, brighter, warmer (90% similar). Laura Mercier Rose Vif (P, $32.00) is darker, cooler (90% similar). MAC Wild Sumac (P, $27.00) is cooler (90% similar). YSL Fuchsia Allusion (99) (P, $38.00) is lighter, warmer, glossier (90% similar). MAC If Wishes Were Roses (LE, $22.00) is lighter, less pigmented (90% similar). Uh, that packaging is kinda unique looking….trying to figure out what to re-use it for…hmmm, too big to hang around the neck like the Louboutin one LOL I have one of the Velvet Matte lip crayons (in a beigey brown shade) and they are on the dry side, but ok for me since I always put SPF lip balm on top. Dragon Girl is pretty, a shade that brightens the face

NARS is a generally great line and I think he comes out with some truly unique and flattering shades, but I feel like he’s set up shop in MAC Land – releasing the same permanent shades in a kitchy package with a famous person’s name on it and a hefty price tag. At least he didn’t stick Orgasm or Laguna in there! The coffer is cool though. If not weirdly named.

And it’s odd that 413 BLKR pencil is fushia. I have the lipstick and its a warm rose brown.

Dragon Girl is one my absolute favourites colour-wise but I find it really dry – if my lips aren’t in top condition, it emphases imperfections I didn’t know I had. The insane wear time I get with it makes it worth it though, especially as the colour is bright enough that the texture issues are only visible close up.
Some of the dupes you’ve listed look promising and super affordable though – colourpop still isn’t available here, but the Milani dupe might be someday soon!

Even though I know that nearly everyone is saying the container looks like a bullet, to my eyes, it reminds me of either a torpedo or a nuclear warhead! Either/ or, it’s pretty dang COOL! One of the only packagings for anything in this collection that looks awesome to me: the bomb of femininity! LoL

As for the actual lipsticks, I really only love Dragon Girl. The other two appear too dull in finish and look uncomfortable for my poor lips! (Although…there is that wonderful stuff called lipgloss)

Bianca Avatar

What does the bullet packaging feel like? Does it have weight to it, and is it sturdy? Basically, how do you feel about the quality of it? I won’t lie… I kind of just want this set for the packaging. ?

Am I the only one who has an issue with the packaging of this? We’re not without our own gun violence problems here in Canada but, honestly, just looking at the horrors that guns have wrought in the US just in recent weeks and months, I see nothing clever or artistic about makeup being packaged inside a pretend bullet. It’s like the sexually suggestive and drug culture glamorizing names of a lot of makeup products – I don’t find anything stylish or clever about any of it and when it comes to this sort of glamorizing of gun violence, I find it both sad and offensive.

i love the packaging !

unfortunately , the only shade i see myself using is dragon girl .

i would get it if the other two shades weren’t shimmery . not a fan of that finish .

Kristina Avatar

The packaging is lost on me. Even if contained three of the most innovative lipsticks known to mankind, I would not purchase something that glorifies guns or warfare. It amazes me that people will have a bird for animal welfare but not human welfare. Shame on you NARS.

Fran Avatar

For some reason I love the name and the packaging on this set, but Sex Machine looks absolutely hideous on me (got it in a holiday set a couple of years back, never could make it work, it makes me look sick/dead/un-dead), and I have dupes for 413 BLKR (Fanny) and Dragon Girl (Cruella and Luxemborg), so I think I’ll have to pass… too bad, really.

Fran Avatar

Thanks for the suggestion, Christine, I’ll try it — but, truthfully, most light or muted shades of lipstick wash me out/make me look sick, even when they’re shades that would look good on me if they were deeper or brighter — I look *way* better in really bright shades. Most sets include light and “nude” shades, neither of which usually look good on me — it’s a shame!

Alecto Avatar

This is the only time in my life I’ve been genuinely tempted by packaging. I keep going back to look at the colors to see if I can justify it, but … I already have dupes of Dragon Girl and Sex Machine, and I doubt I’d wear the other. 🙁

Laura Avatar

Hmm.. it’s weird, I have both Dragon Girl and Cruella, and to me they don’t look like dupes AT ALL. Dragon Girl is a bright and pinky red, and Cruella is MUCH darker and more muted. It doesn’t seem right to me that Cruella is listed as being lighter than Dragon Girl.

I don’t mean to sound harsh, I just thought I’d comment because I’ve been reading your site for over five years and this is the first time I don’t agree with a dupe mention. Just a thought! 🙂

Alex Avatar

I have Dragon Girl, love the texture, the comfort, not so drying as other matte formulas, and the wearing time (I’m addicted to these Nars pencils) but I just hate the colour. On me it pulls a bright fushia that does not look like a red at ALL. It happens a lot with cool reds and I was wondering why, could it be my skin tone is cool? (I have always considered myself on the neutral side but I could be wrong).
