Melt Cosmetics Smoke Sessions Eyeshadow Palette ($48.00 for 0.58 oz.) is a new, limited edition palette that launched on Black Friday (last week). Shocking me absolutely zero percent, this green-themed palette sold out shortly after it launched, but the brand is working on restocking in a few months. If you know anything about me, it’s probably that I’m a fiend for green, so despite that dire news, I couldn’t help but plaster it all over my face immediately.

YOWZA. As usual, you’ve made magic. I’m so pleased I nabbed this palette (though I wish there were just 2 more mattes). I haven’t had much time to play, but am curious to see if/how it pairs with Melt Gemini.

Keri Avatar

Honestly, this and gemini are perfect with each other. I’ve been using them together for the past 3 days and combined they are my absolute go too for green themed palettes.

Sara Avatar

So, I purchased this palette because it’s green and frankly I think the theme is great. But I’m nervous about using it. Two of the shades seem way overpacked in the pans, perhaps not pressed hard enough, and I’ve read comments from others who say the pans that are overpacked “explode” product everywhere when swatched.

I wonder if there is a quality control issue at hand. There are plenty of comments saying the pans aren’t packed correctly and I think this is why Melt said it will take them “months” to release more palettes. Surely I’m not the only one with concerns?

My palette still sits unusued. I wonder if I wasted money.

If Melt doesn’t own their machinery, it’s likely they have to negotiate getting onto a production line, which does involve scheduling into someone else’s calendar and usually when you start again, there may be some testing to ensure that everything is properly calibrated, mixed, etc. along with securing the ingredients. A few months is pretty normal, actually – look at how long it took MAC to run more inventory for something like the Aaliyah collection – if they didn’t pre-plan it. Some brands plan on restocking so they’ll pre-order for the next batch (so there’s a more continuous flow of inventory, often down for permanent items) but if the first set of stock sells through significantly faster than they anticipated, they may not be able to jump the line to get more stock any time soon.

I didn’t have any issues with any of the pans exploding or becoming loose after swatching and using it on my end. If you’re not going to use it, then I’d return it? Either try it, and if you have issues, contact Melt (defective) or return it – don’t waste $48!

Sarah Avatar

You know, I didn’t take production into consideration! I’m sick so I’m not thinking on all cylinders, but that is an excellent point and makes perfect sense to me.

I do want to use it, but I’m anxious I might break a shadow. I just thought this was unusual considering the high quality Melt is generally known for. The shades do look dreamy and I love the looks I’m seeing others put out, so I shouldn’t let my fears of breaking a shadow hold me back. When I first saw photos of the palette I thought “this is the green palette I need in my life” and eyeshadows are meant to be used and not displayed. Time to clean my brushes and dig in.

Sara, I don’t know if you subscribe to Tarababyz on YT but she did a swatch and tutorial using the palette and addressed the pressing issue. She had several shades that looked like they were swelling out of the pans and as others and Christine have stated, she pushed them down before using and no problems. She does try to be a little bit gentle with them. Not that you need me to tell you but I think Christine is right, use it and if it fails let Melt fix it. I know a couple of people on YT were concerned with how Melt would handle it since it is sold out and they won’t have restock for awhile but I imagine they plan for that sort of thing in production. Good luck!!

Ashley Avatar

I love that you did different looks with each end of the palette! I really want to try Melt cosmetics, but the price tag always stops me…Maybe I’ll have to give in to the “Limited” edition ploy & get this one haha

LOL Fiend for green!! Gorgeous colors here and quality looks great. With the success of this palette and Huda’s Emerald, let’s hope more brands come out with green palettes

Rachel Avatar

Well apparently this will be my first Melt purchase, once it’s restocked! Wowzers!! Green is my fave too and this marries the warmer olives with the cooler emeralds beautifully!

Nancy T Avatar

Ah, I feel ya on this plethora of intense greens, Christine! Once this beauty becomes available once more, I may have to take the plunge. Even if it winds up being the only eyeshadow palette I buy in 2019. The only part I’m not a fan of is the use of the word “Smoke” in the naming. I’m not anti-medicinal cannabis usage (specifically CBD oil, in case there’s any question), but smoking anything runs so counter to my strongly held beliefs.

I have no issue with the “theme”, or shade names, and am not personally put off or offended by any of the shade names/packaging, but I do think it’s in poor taste for the very reason you stated; there are potential buyers who may be uncomfortable. I personally don’t want pot leaves on my relatively expensive palette, and feel it really is a cheap ploy to be “relevant”. If I end up buying it, I will either cover it with contact paper, or depot the entire thing (no pun intended, LOL!)… The pricepoint of the brand makes me feel like the demographic isn’t necessarily a bunch of heavy indulgers. I have several friends/acquaintances who are regular smokers (they are all quite successful, productive adults), and none are the type to fork over $50 on eyeshadow…

Jennifer Avatar

Regular smoker, every morning and all evening. University educated, full time employed in my field. Spends 100s of dollars on makeup monthly. So I think this palette is cool!

Hi Nancy,
I have to say that I agree. I don’t have anything against those who want to partake although for various reasons I don’t think they should but it is an individual decision. I think the thing that kept me from ordering this before it sold out was the marketing. I know that isn’t the best reason to someone who partakes on a daily basis but I think it is an issue. I am not going to get into it here in this forum but suffice to say, I didn’t order it and still am not sure if I will when it relaunches. I am hoping that it will trigger a response that delivers more green and cool toned palettes to those of us who love those colours/shades/undertones. While this palette is beautiful, the more gold based shades are not ones that I can use successfully. I think they would look amazing on you with your more olive undertones.

Rebecca Avatar

Yes, whenever you get a Melt palette with shimmers you must press them down the second you open the palette. That way they won’t crumble. This might ruin the leaf designs, but I’d rather have the shadows intact and the leaves won’t last long anyway.

Xenia Avatar

Beautiful look. That blueish highlight shade is everything. Looks like a beautiful palette, I may consider grabbing one whenever it comes back in stock.

tamara larson Avatar

OMG so i dont have to actually boycott Melt. i wanted this but didn’t get paid till the next day, and of course they didnt order enough to give people a chance to get it after deciding or being able to afford it and their predisposition to hyper limited edition release has always kept me from ever ordering from them but this pallet was so pretty that i chose to buy it if it was available when my paycheck cleared. i thought i was gone forever but if they restock down the road then i want as my 1st Melt order

xamyx Avatar

Although the Gemini palette took a while to restock, it does seem they made sure to order enough made to ensure everyone got one. In fact, it was still available months later, and I have a good feeling it’ll be the same with this one.

JillianB Avatar

This palette looks so much better than I was expecting! I haven’t tried any Melt products before but it looks like I should. Thanks for sharing!

Pamela Avatar

I love green shades. I really wish I could have snagged this before it sold out. I’m thinking of buying the Huda obsessions Emerald palette just to satisfy my need for a green themed palette.

Genevieve Avatar

Absolutely sensational! One of our readers here purchased this palette last week and I looked it up and was blown away by the shades. I am a green lover fiend and this palette answers all my dreams about the shade. I am so, so happy that you are going to review it.
By the fact that the palette has sold out so quickly shows that there was a real need for this shade to be represented in the beauty market.
I do hope they restock quickly because I think/know that I will want this from Santa.
Stunning eye looks Christine.

Brenda Avatar

As soon as I saw this palette on Reddit I knew I had to have it. I’m so glad I was able to pick it up during the presale. I’ve used it once, the right side of the palette, and I absolutely loved it. Even received a compliment from a coworker who doesn’t wear makeup that she liked my eyeshadow.

Vivian Avatar

I’m sad… I’ve been following you for years using Bloglovin’ and for the first time I can’t view swatches on there; just photos of the product.

I wish that Gravity OG, Grand Daddy, and Black Widow weren’t so similar. : ( I may have to rethink whether or not I want to pick it up during the restock.

Deborah S. Avatar

I really love the look of this palette and love, love and love again, the greens. I am so happy to see a brand bring out a green based palette. I personally feel like the left side of the palette could have done with a bit of variation in the shades. One mostly gold/green shade would have been enough I think.
I did not pre-order or purchase this palette for personal reasons related to their marketing of the palette but I am happy for anyone else who doesn’t have an issue with it and who were successful in purchasing the palette. I am waiting with bated breath for what I hope this palette will do to the beauty community and the possibility of it spawning a rash of palettes similar to the effect Mod Ren had on the shade choices of almost every palette that has been released since.
I know they plan on restocking so for those who wanted it and didn’t get it, I think you will be able to down the road and hopefully sooner rather than later.

I love looking at the pretty pictures. I love greens on my lower lids too…and I would have bought this just because of the greens, mostly mean green. While not dupes, I am immensely satisfied with Pat Mcgrath and the ability to transform the greens. I used to wish there would have been a Naked Safari with bronzes, coppers and greens, but my last Naked Palette I bought was Heat. No more. My next purchase when Sephora has their Rouge sale is PG Sublime. Because Pat and another green.

Lorrin M. Avatar

I love the colors especially that mint! That said I’m honestly not a fan of the theme as it reads immature to me. I think weed culture is what creates the stigma surrounding it and why people are less in favor of legalizing it. It’s like as far as medicinal properties go I don’t want Advil stamped on my eyeshadows so why would I want marijuana on them? I don’t think Melt needs to try so hard to be edgy, we get it lol.

Emilie Avatar

Aaaaa this palette is so gorgeous, but the price tag kept me from picking it up. Just seems kind of high to me (pun intended). I’d love to have both this and the Gemini palette so I can pair them, hopefully Melt decides to let this one stick around for a while after they restock. I did snag a couple of their lipsticks during their Black Friday sale, which I’m eager to try.

AJ Avatar

Totally not a pot smoker but I had to have it anyway! I have experienced the metallic shadows being too soft and loose in the pan, including one of them is broken, so I am glad to see the advice here about pressing them down. I’ll do that and see if I can stop getting Gravity OG all over the place every time I open it.

I wore an olive gold look from the palette on Saturday, and a true green look on Sunday, and they both looked great. I’m also looking forward to combining it with colors from Gemini.
