Maybelline Petunia Punk (120) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow

For spring, there are five new, limited edition shades of Maybelline Color Tattoo Eyeshadows ($6.99 for 0.14 oz. each). They’ve just popped up locally for me, and as far as I know, you’ll probably have to track them down in-store if any of them appeal to you (usually, limited edition collections from drugstore brands aren’t available online).

All five had a slight greasy quality to them–slightly thinner but more slip than you’d expect and a bit heavy–but surprisingly, they lasted anywhere from 10 to 16 hours on me before creasing (which isn’t “24 hour wear without creasing or fading”), which is good wear for a cream eyeshadow but shorter than average wear for the original Color Tattoos (last spring I tested shades for 16 hours and didn’t have fading/creasing at that point). Every time I see a 24-hour wear time claim, I feel like I’m watching someone go into a pitch black basement in a horror movie screaming, “NOOOOO!”

The bigger issue I had with these was that they were harder to apply; they just didn’t have even, smooth coverage. They blend with each other nicely, but there were as of the lid where color was semi-sheer and other areas where the color would be mostly opaque. The only shade that didn’t have that issue was Black Orchid, which would be my top pick out of the bunch. I think these are best used as colored eyeshadows bases or as sheer washes of lighter, more shimmery/metallic eyeshadow, but if you want really opaque, smooth, true-to-pot color, you’ll be disappointed.

Maybelline Petunia Punk (120) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a cool-toned, light-medium pink with a silvery-white frost finish. It had semi-opaque color coverage and lasted for twelve hours before starting to crease. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Hibiscus Heartbreak (125) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a muted, medium lavender with a cool undertone and warmer, golden pearl that gives it a more metallic finish. It had semi-sheer pigmentation, looked uneven applied, and lasted for ten and a half hours before I noticed very slight creasing. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Black Orchid (130) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a medium-dark taupe brown with warm undertones and a gray overcast. It had mostly opaque coverage and had a slightly thicker consistency compared to the other shades in the spring set (more in line with the originals). It was browner when sheered out, and you lost a lot of the gray as a result. It wore well for sixteen hours, and I saw very slight fading but no creasing at that point. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Hydrangea Hype (135) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a brightened, light-medium silvery blue with a metallic sheen. When it is sheered out, it is even lighter and more dominated by its silver tones. It had mostly opaque pigmentation that went on unevenly and tended to streak. It lasted for ten hours on me before I noticed creasing. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Maybelline Rose Riot (140) Color Tattoo Eyeshadow ($6.99 for 0.14 oz.) is a light-medium pink with warm undertones and a gold, frosted metallic sheen. It had semi-sheer coverage that was best applied as a sheer wash, as it didn’t go on evenly due to the higher slip of the product. This shade lasted for twelve hours before creasing. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

You know, whenever I always see you give a bad grade to products I go ‘oh no it must be really crap’. Then you pull them all together into a ridiculously beautiful look at the end!

Jane Avatar

I would love to buy Black Orchid, but it’s been sold out at the places I’ve been. I really despise super limited editions.

Nicole Avatar

I had a feeling that would be the case. Even Ulta, seems not to stock these barely. You would think the companies would want to make some $..ehh..whatever. I jot down a few of the well performing drugstore items I am interested in and if I see them, I grab them. It is a rare find though. Definitely not worth an extra trip or stress though.

Oh, bummer 🙁 These colors are so pretty for spring, especially the blue (sigh). Black Orchid is the most highly rated one, but I’ve only seen a few displays, most disappeared quickly, and it’s fairly dupe-able, so not worth my effort to track down. Wish the blue one rated better

Ginny Avatar

Yeah, I bought Petunia, Hibiscus, and Rose Riot. They are sheer so they’re definitely not like the regular color tattoos. They all kind of look the same on and they’re best used solo, just a dab and spread well. But I still like them. I like a quick iridescent eye look, especially with summer coming up. They’re good on the lid, browbone, and I think I’ll try them on my cheekbones. I checked two CVSs, one Walgreens, and one Harmons–only found the display at one CVS.

Alecto Avatar

Darn it! And I really, really, wanted a warm pink!

[sigh]These break my heart. I’ve been looking forward to new Color Tattoo colors for a while, but these are all so pale. I think they would have been fine if they had come out like the colors in the pots, but even in their non-blended-out form they’re measurably paler than the pot color. The only one that seems promising is Black Orchid, since it rated higher and seems closer to the pot color than the rest (and I don’t have anything like it in my other pot colors), but I have a liquid eyeshadow by Silk Naturals (called Gotham) which has all the luscious medium-grey-brown-with-shimmer goodness of Black Orchid without the color change issues that come with blending out.

Although … when you did your wear test, were they in their thinner, blended out form or did you make them thicker? I guess I’m still tempted by Black Orchid if wearing it densely doesn’t increase its potential to crease.

Christine Avatar

Hey Alecto,

I wore them very similarly to the way it looks in the eye photo – I didn’t spackle it on until it was totally opaque regardless of layers, but I didn’t sheer them out as a wash. More or less, I tried to wear them as actual eyeshadows!

Alecto Avatar

Okay, thanks for the reply. Your eye look is lovely, but Black Orchid doesn’t look as I had hoped there. I guess I’ll wait to see what summer and Fall bring to the Color Tattoo lineup.

Oh Black Orchid, Black Orchid, Black Orchid… a taupe… wore well for “16 hours”?!!!!! A Temptalia Recommends? Can’t resist !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the colors are lovely, especially Black Orchid and Hydrangea Hype. I just find Color Tattoo, in general, to be hard to apply. I finally figured out getting them on more smoothly, so I can use them as a base. I don’t think they look good on their own, though the staying power is great. So, I’ll pass.

Rachel R. Avatar

My fingers didn’t work, so I ended up trying out every flat, stiffer, synthetic brush I own. I ended up having sucess with a cheapie bhcosmetics small eyeshadow brush from the 12-pc Classic Brush Set (I think I got it as a freebie with an order at some point).

Anyway, I find if I use the flat side against the Tattoo, and move it in small circles to pick up the color, I can then pat it on my lids. Then I can blend out the worst of the patchiness with the same brush. So it’s usable as a base for me, and I’m not wasting the couple I bought. I still hate them as eyeshadows in and of themselves, but my powdered shadows do stick well to them.

BonnieBBon Avatar

Rachel you are amazing and IOU one!!!! I got that same classic bh set it was either a freebie with purchase or you could add on for $2.99 ( can’t remember which deal was that set) anyway, it works so great! Genius! Thank you for sharing

I’m going to NYC at the end of the month – what are my chances of finding Black Orchid in stores? They seem to be sold out online

Knittychica Avatar

If anyone is searching for black orchid & misses it – Mally Evercolor Eyeshadow Stick in Dusk is very very similar. Mally is more $$, but the shadow sticks perform very much like the CT formula.

I’d love to see maybelline add this one to the list of permanent colors. I think there’s some pretty bad permanent shades they could phase out to make space.

I skipped the pinks becuase I already have Inked in Pink. While they didn’t look the same, I didn’t think they were dramatically different enough to warrant purchasing.

Genevieve Avatar

Not really a fan of cream colours because I think they go all hard after a few weeks. Nor am I a fan of pinkish colours. So this is a miss for me. But I do think the Hydrangea Hype colour is very pretty. Again, a great look you have done Christine considering the grade of the shades.

Maybelline Rebel Bloom eyeshadows – WHY YOU NO COME TO AUSTRALIA?! This is the most gorgeous set of colours I’ve seen in a while. Eugh, I NEED THEM. x

Maiko Avatar

I am so disappointed that these couldn’t apply consistently, I have always been happy with the colour tattoo range so this is a bit of a let down.

The Maybelline displays I’ve seen had spaces for about a half-dozen Color Tattoos, I imagine one of each color with 2 of a couple of the colors. I think that’s pretty pitiful even for LE as far as availability goes. Unless you get to the display within a second or two of it being put up, you’ll just see empty spots where the tattoos USED to be. I like that purpley one but haven’t seen it available anywhere.

Harriet Avatar

Thanks for the swatches and reviews! I got my hands on last year’s spring collection and they sucked so I ended up giving them away. I need to get my hands on black orchid this year tho

Nancy Avatar

I was able to get the last one of Black Orchid and the Hibiscus Heartbreak pots one at Walgreens and the other at a Rite-Aid store, but that’s all they had there. 🙁 they should have at least 5 or so of each not just 2. I like using the Black orchid as a base for my naked 3 palette colors. I keep hoping they’ll make some more perm. color tattoos (fingers crossed) Thanks for the swatches Christine!

BonnieBBon Avatar

I just got home from the cvs by my house and was able to score Black Orchid! I’m a freak for color tattoos and I’m way out of proportion excited lol

I think I must have missed this post when these first came out but I recently saw this in-store and let it percolate for a few days and went back to purchase. It was sold out EVERYWHERE (except for one store that had one lone one left and that was because the seal had been broken, they’d taped it shut again but I got the SA to check and it had, in fact, been touched – there was a bit ol’ fingerprint right in the middle). Anyway, after hitting several more Shoppers Drug Mart stores, I finally found one that had 2 of these left (all the stores had loads of the other shades – I guess word is out that those are pretty crummy). I really like this and I love the Colour Tattoos generally (just hope it doesn’t dry out – the Nude Compliment I have is already becoming a bit difficult to use).
