Marc Jacobs Beauty The Sky-Liner Petite Highliner Collection ($45.00 for 0.07 oz.) is a set of seven, travel-sized Highliner Gel Crayons, which is a pencil eyeliner that twists up (no sharpening required). The formula is supposed to be waterproof, intensely pigmented, and smooth. I have a love/hate relationship with these, because some of the colors in the range are rather unique, but often, they’re not as creamy or as pigmented as expected. They are, in general, all very long-wearing and waterproof. Two shades–Midnight in Paris and Sunset–are exclusive to this set.

This set seems to be an excellent way to try the formula, though, without investing $25 each. In the set, each pencil contains 0.37g/0.01 oz. while the full-sized eyeliners are 0.5g/0.01 oz. When I convert grams to ounces (using Google), 0.37g is really 0.0131 oz. and 0.5g is really 0.0176 oz. So this set contains 0.0917 oz. worth of eyeliner, or $130.26 worth of eyeliner. Or, if you’re not apt to finish products, for less than the cost of two shades, you get to try seven. I didn’t have any issues with my set, but some readers have received deluxe/travel-versions as samples and have found that sometimes the pencil loosens inside, so that’s just a heads up!

Midnight in Paris is described as an “inky indigo blue.” It’s a blackened navy blue with a shimmery sheen and slight sparkle. It had semi-opaque color coverage in one stroke, and it was buildable to mostly opaque color in two passes. It was lightly creamy and didn’t tug, but it’s not as creamy as the best in the range. It wore well for nine hours before thinning slightly. NARS Night Flight (P, $24.00) is darker. Buxom Pick Me Up (P, $17.00) is lighter. Urban Decay LSD (P, $19.00) is slightly warmer. MAC Industrial (P, $15.00) is warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Sunset is described as a “golden bronze shimmer.” It’s a coppery orange with warm undertones and a metallic finish. It had semi-opaque pigmentation in one pass, and it was buildable to mostly opaque color coverage. The consistency was moderately creamy and glided along the lash line without pulling. It wore well for nine and a half hours on me. MAC Copperthorn (LE, $$16.00) is a gel eyeliner, more glittery. MAC Cockiness (LE) is a liquid eyeliner. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Blacquer is described as a “black.” It’s a deep, dark, inky black with a soft sheen. It was intensely pigmented in one stroke, and the consistency was creamy and glided on like silk. It definitely represents when the formula is at its best. On me, this shade lasted for ten hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

You can browse through reviews of the other shades in this set here. Or view them individually: (Plum)age, Th(ink), (Brown)out, and O(vert). I swatched all the ones in the set to see how they compared in color payoff and texture to my full-sized versions, and (Plum)age seemed to have less of a sheen, was a touch darker but similar color payoff, while O(vert) seemed more pigmented in this set with a creamier consistency. Blacquer, Th(ink), and (Brown)out were consistent.

I’m so on the fence with these; I own brown(out) which is really pretty, but can be a bit too sparkly to wear to work. They all seem quite sparkly. Are you going to do any looks with them? I really do love the idea of the Sunset color for my waterline.

Sara Avatar

This is exactly was I was hoping for in the holiday collection! I’ve been dying to try out Marc Jacobs eyeliners, and I got Brown(out) with 100 Sephora points a while back. I’m a huge fan. I just wish Intro(vert) or Ody(sea) was in there. I’ll definitely be buying Intro(vert) on it’s own when I get a GC or something. But this set will definitely be mine! I never finish liners, so it’s perfect.

Becca Avatar

I take that back though, only Plumage really looks that patchy. But I’m a bit new to high-end makeup; So thanks for doing what you do! I’m definitely started to get a little obsessed with Too Faced… I only have one new holiday palette from them, but I have a feeling I’m going to end up going a bit nuts! Lol.

Becca Avatar

I got the new La Bella Carousel set. I didn’t even swatch it yet because I’m sick and kinda paranoid about contaminating anything, lol! I also have my eye on the Everything Nice palette. I love some of the shades, and Totally Fetch was the only one I was really interested in from the Pretty Rebel palette, so it’s nice to see it repeated in a bigger palette. 🙂 My mom is such an enabler, when I was going to get the Carousel set she said: “I’ll pay for half, that’s such a good deal!” Haha.

Johanna Avatar

This is a really great deal! I don’t use colored eyeliners that much, just here and there, so these would give me great variety and a way to try out their formula. Def going on my Christmas wish list… I’m starting to get scared by all the amazing LE stuff coming out already! I already *need* to pounce on Vice, the ambient lighting blush palette, and that gorgeous Chanel Dentelle highlighter, lol. My wallet is already wincing in pain.

Shars Avatar

Thanks a million for reviewing this! This for sure is on my Christmas list. It’s already in my Sephora online cart if I’m honest lol. A Sephora artist had swatched Brown(out) on my wrist in store once and I loved the payoff and colour and it took serious scrubbing to get off so I’m a bit more confident that these will work with my sometimes watery/allergy affected eyes. Thanks again!

First, let me say, Christine you are truly the best. Every time I hear about a product coming out and wonder to myself “when will Christine review it”, poof, you have the review up with swatches in hours or in a couple of days, at the most. I actually tweeted you a couple days ago to ask if you were going to review Gucci’s line and like magic you posted a couple of reviews. You are always so thorough and straight to the point. I really appreciate your effort and hard work. I take my beauty habits very seriously since I spend a considerable amount of money each year and need reviews from people who take it as seriously.

Now, back to the product. I was so excited when I first saw your preview of MJB Sky-Liner Petite Highliner collection. I have a couple already (Jazz(berry), Ro(cocoa) which I love and returned some that I didn’t love (Blaquer, (Wave)length). I like that they are travel size as I travel for my job and the possibility of trying new colors. I have been eyeing Overt for some time now so that really caught my eye. I was originally going to order from MJB site but it was $50 min for free shipping. I’m debating if I want to wait for Sephora to get it so I can earn the points or just order from MJB site.

Carrie Avatar

I’m torn. I still want to try the formula, but I feel that Midnight in Paris and Th(ink) are a bit too close in color for my taste- even though Th(ink) has a more noted cool blurple tone to it.

Hmm.. maybe if it shows up in store I’ll play with it.

Carrie Avatar

That does help, though I also rarely wear eyeliner that is that close to black because I think it’s just too dark for my pale skin. Maybe I’ll just get a full sized Th(ink) it’s a lovely color!

Kirsten Avatar

Well, I caved and bought it! I regretted so much missing last year’s Tarte Carried Away, so I splurged on myself this year. Do you know if there will be an OCC holiday lip tar set? I just tried them for the first time too and now I’m jonesing.

Eliz Avatar

This set is just gorgeous. I have fallen in love with these highliners. I already had (Stone)Fox and Brown(Out), so I knew I needed this set, plus (Luna)tic. As you are quite right to point out, there are some some pigmentation and texture inconsistencies between shades. But, after a couple of uses, I am getting a handle on which shades do what. I love that Marc has given some classic shades a modern twist and thrown in a couple of wildcards. In this Sky-Liner set, Midnight in Paris is my early favorite as the blackened-navy with just a hint of tonal shimmer is just stunning. (Plum)age is also a surprise hit with me as it is pulling some neutral taupe with its purple-y goodness. For fun, I layered (Luna)tic over (Plum)age and I got a lilac meets gunmetal kind of look that was really cool. Sorry to write a novel here. As always, your swatches and reviews are impeccable – thank you!

Mariella Avatar

Midnight in Paris is stunning! I have issues with the insane price of the Marc Jacobs liners but I also really like them (just wish they weren’t quite so pricey for so little product). I love Overt and Brownout so I may just treat myself to this set.

Aline Avatar

I got this set yesterday and am trying out two of them today. I’ve wanted to try a few from the line, but it’s a big investment to buy two or three of them. If you have a high end makeup love to buy for, this would be a great gift. It was packaged beautifully.

Jo Avatar

I was already thinking about buying Th(ink) but Midnight in Paris and Blacquer look good too and there’s no such thing as too many eyeliners… $25 dollars seemed a lot for Th(Ink) on its own. I tried it in Paris the other day (don’t have it in the UK 🙁 ) but was undecided so this seems ideal 😀

Diana Avatar

I’m not much of an eyeliner person..BUT…this set makes me want to be so I might use it to try out MJ’s formula. My problem with liners is that they usually smudge a ton on me and I have eye bags soooo it makes them so much more noticeable. Christine, do these stay on longer the UD liners? b/c those last like 2 hours top on me without smudging every where…

Sylirael Avatar

Augh! I want this something fierce. UDs liner sets for this holiday didn’t wow me, but I’m a coloured eyeliner girl all the way, and I’ve been lusting after the MJ ones for a while… I’ll second the other comment above about it being a shame that Ody(sea) isn’t in the set, but I can’t complain too much 😉 Now I just have to figure out a way to get one of these to me…

I like the look of O(vert) especially, since I hunted down the L’Oreal Silkissime eyeliner range here (in the opes of getting that Ivy one), and discovered that L’Oreal assumes we only want black liner in this country – that’s the only shade they’ve released here. 🙁 However, Maybelline and Revlon just recently released a bunch of brightly coloured liners, so maybe L’Oreal will get its game on and bring the rest of the Silkissime ones! 😀

JENNIFER Avatar

I definitely want this set, I got the 100 point Sephora perk and fell in love, it really stays on my waterline, it’s great, I had a few of these on my list to get, so now I think I’ll just get the set to try more colors.

Sweta Avatar

So good to see you gave this a good rating as I ordered the set as soon as it launched and was wondering how it will be…but i am glad as this will be first purchase from Marc Jacobs line, though i wish they included the teal shade:)

StrangeOne Avatar

So so tempted but I haven’t even sharpened half the pencils in ud ocho locho 2 set which I’ve had for months so I don’t see what I’m going to do with another set with similar colours.

Sweta Avatar

Looks like I was not able to post the comment yesterday..hopefully now I can. I am so glad this set got a good rating as I ordered it as soon as it was available. Trying something for the first time from this line..so excited!

Arielaaa Avatar

As soon as i saw this up on Sephora i could’t decide if i really wanted it! I’m sooooo glad you posted the swatches cause it makes me really want them! And i think my mind is made up, I’m getting it!

Lotus Avatar

I love all these, I own the full size, minus the 2 LE shades which are extremely dupable so I think this is a lovely idea for people to try them as well, I think they should make additional sets of different colors so people can still pay for their quality but not have to vommitting so much money to buying full-size, so a few color variety choices would be great, too. I’m glad more people can finally have access! YaY! MJB! (And you, Christine. I’m certain many were waiting for this review quite eagerly!)

Mandy Avatar

I’m torn between these and some sephora collection 12 hr contour liners…. Sigh… Which do you prefer Christine?
Or would you do both?
I have hazel green eyes if that helps.
Thanks!

Christine Avatar

Okay, if you had the money, and it’s not a big deal to spend it, both of them are really nice. If you should only get one, I’d go MJB, because Sephora’s eyeliners are cheaper (period) and they put out another set earlier this year, so you might see them do so a few times a year. MJB might not do them often, again, or maybe just at holiday!
