Marc Jacobs Beauty The Night Owl (214) Style Eye-Con No. 7 Palette Review, Photos, Swatches
Marc Jacobs Beauty The Night Owl (214) Style Eye-Con No. 7 Palette
Marc Jacobs Beauty The Night Owl (214) Style Eye-Con No. 7 Palette ($59.00 for 0.24 oz.) includes seven shades ranging from matte beige to green-teal to eggplant. It’s a new(er) and permanent addition to the palette range that released in the fall. Overall, it’s a nice palette with six of the seven shades performing well with good color payoff, long-wear, and softer, easier-to-use textures. The one that was the major miss was drier with a stiffer consistency that made it harder to blend and use on the eyelid. It seemed like a more unique mix of shades to me, which is nice to see.
The Night Owl #1 is described as a “champagne sheen with silver glitter.” It’s a muted, antique gold with neutral-to-warm undertones and a metallic sheen. While I detected silver micro-glitter in the pan, almost none showed up on the actual lid, so there didn’t seem to be issues with fall out either (because there wasn’t any to fall!). The color itself wore well for eight and a half hours before creasing slightly. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
The Night Owl #2 is described as an “intense black matte with iridescent glitter.” It’s a deep, dark black with a mostly matte finish (and it appears mostly matte once applied and blended on the skin) and a sprinkling of very fine multi-colored shimmer. It wore well for eight and a half hours before fading. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
The Night Owl #3 is described as a “metallic golden bronze.” It’s a rich, medium-dark honey gold with hints of brown in its base and a high-shine, metallic finish. It was incredibly soft, buttery, and smooth with intense color payoff. It wore well for nine hours before creasing slightly. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
The Night Owl #4 is described as a “matte creme.” It’s a light beige with warm undertones and a matte finish. It had good color payoff with a soft, silky consistency that wasn’t powdery. It wore well for eight hours on me. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
The Night Owl #5 is described as a “mermaid sheen with subtle iridescent shimmer.” It’s a brightened, bluish-teal with a frosted, metallic sheen and subtle silver sparkle. The consistency is a smidgen dry, though it is very pigmented and was fairly easy to blend. It wore well for eight and a half hours. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
The Night Owl #6 is described as a “cocoa matte with rose gold shimmer.” It’s a dark brown with warm, reddish undertones and a mostly matte finish. There is a light dusting of gold micro-shimmer. It had good pigmentation with a soft, blendable consistency that wore well for eight and a half hours before fading. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
The Night Owl #7 is described as a “rich matte espresso.” It’s a blackened eggplant purple with subtle, warm undertones and a satin-matte finish. This was the worst-performing shade in the palette, as it was drier and stiffer, so the color payoff was lacking and blendability was lower. It started to fade after eight hours of wear. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Wow, these shades look gorgeous and so pigmented. I love MJ palettes! The eye look you created is so pretty too!
Every one but the last one was pretty good!
The swatch of the last one still looks pretty good but I know what you mean by it being dry and hard to blend.
#3 IS EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *dies*
lol!
I agree Maddie!
This palette has been tempting me for a while! What a gorgeous look you created with it, Christine! xo
Thanks, Jen!
Nice to see a high-end palette score so many A’s, and a couple of brighter colors in there to keep it interesting
Finally! Haha.
omfg that gold… if the blue was a blue/green duochrome type shade or even a blue with a gold sheen I would be on this like white on rice!
lol!
I love the packaging of this palette. And that is a unique eye shadow application that I just love, Christine. Great job 🙂
xx
Jenny
Thank you, Jenny!
Excuse me while I wipe off my drool.
How could I have missed this during the VIB. Say it isn’t so!
Awww!
This palette is killing it until the last two shades. I would have liked to see that brown be either lighter, more sepia, more golden, or more bronzey… and to see the eggplant have more of a red tone or red flash in it, to be more vibrant. Matte dark browns are certainly useful but here they seem a little dull and too much alike. If the palette is called Night Owl, forget practicality and just go for it.
It could have used one or two lighter mattes, I think!
This looks so nice! I’m so wary of his palettes, though 🙁 I recently returned The Enigma palette because every single shade in it was so subpar that I couldn’t stand it.
Oh no! 🙁
This is the first swatches from a Marc Jacobs palette where I could actually see myself using the colors. Alas though I’m still trying to supplement my collection with singles instead of buying new palettes.
At least it’s permanent, so you can always come back to it later on!
Great colors! I didn’t pick up any of the MJ palettes as they seemed similar to stuff I already have, but this one .. very pretty and Nightowl #2 is gorgeous!
Monica.
There are some definite dupable palettes in the range!
I think it’s safe to assume how I feel about this! 😀 😉 All good!!!!! (I have to add I have already made $52 w/ebates! Mobile Monday was a killing! 12% back at Sephora, 16% some places.. I mean, why didn’t I do this year’s ago? UGH! Come December.. Money flows in for me and I’ll shop again! Yes, I’m all empty. Sad bank. lol! 😛 ( I really want the mauve vitality blush!! That’s the exact color I turn! I can’t wait for December to buy it! Thank you sooo much for that review! It might be my new Frankly Scarlet!! And I have the Awe-mazing French It cosmetics blush brush with funky handle., waiting.. 😉 In the future, a section dedicated to Marc Jacobs! These blow my mind! When in the beginning of the year is the Sephora 20% thing again? Your responses have helped me more than I can say because I always bought right before.. But now that you’ve given me a heads up, I’ve been able to plan and I feel more in control. Thanks, Christine! Looking forward to hear the month I should prep for! 😀
Haha! yes, that is how I felt after joining Ebates. I was like, “Well, look at all the money I’ve missed out on!”
I really don’t have insight into when Sephora does their sales – the best guess is just looking at when they did them the year prior, but there’s never a guarantee. I rarely get much more than 1-2 day notice from Sephora!
Exactly! 😀 Its so cool! 🙂 Thank you, I will be waiting your cue in the beginning of 2015, just as you wait for yours! 😉 #Appreciation 🙂
I know in late on this, but the MJ tease palette lead me to this one and my heart is a flutter adoring it! Not sure how I missed this in your initial review Christine. This one has me speechless. I honestly can not think of any good dupes in my heap. I’ll work with that last weakling. If my memory serves correct, Sephora typically has a big VIB 20% off event for spring around marching/April. I’m really loving the Tease as I can’t seem to hunt down a better purple palette and I can do primer and pat colors. If you have other suggestions. Please feel free to suggest. I personally, hate the packaging on MJ palettes. But, I may take the sacrifice..nothing’s perfect ,right? Then what would we have to do for fun? !Lol.
This looks like a ridiculously good palette. Want. NEED.
It is pretty nice!
Ahh I don’t even think I’ll use a palette like this too often (despite the fact that it is BEAUTIFUL. I’ve just got more used to a simpler eye look and a bolder lip), but the look you did makes me want it anyways! I especially love the lower waterline/lash line contrast!
This is beautiful, but it seems like a random combination of colors to me.
Wow, all these swatches except for number 7look amazing! This is a pretty spectacular palette, want!
I love love love the look you created, Christine! Very inspiring 🙂
Finally seeing you reviewing this palette. Thank you Christine! I have been craving for it since day one, but it was always out of stock on Sephora website. i was worried if it was a limited edition and i just totally missed it. Now im glad to see its a permanent one and it performs so well. I love the unique color combination. It’s very autumn but really stands out among the golden ocean of holiday palettes. love the mermaid green!
I love the blue. Hard to find decent blue eyeshadows.
*swoon* Sooo freaking gorgeous! I really like the mix of colors on this one. Another thing to add to my wish list. It’s so nice to see the good grades.
I love this, I don’t need this, but I want this. What do I do, my beauty guru CHRISTINE ?????
Wow – that palette is stunning. Definitely love the green colour – no. 5 (no surprises there), the nos. 1 and 3 are the best ones for me. My only regret is that they had those murky browny colours 3 & 6 – one too many similar shades – now a lovely teal or navy blue would be lovely. However, the quality of these shadows is stunning in comparison to some of the shoddy offerings we have had lately. And at least it is not another neutral palette…
I also meant to say that your eye look is amazing Christine. So beautiful. Those colours really suit you – especially the pairing of the gold and blue/green.
Too warm for me but stunning!
That gold is a wowsa!!!! The rest looks pretty too… I have two of the small palettes and I use them for travel, they don’t have colours like these in them though. So pretty!
I am 100% buying this for myself. Usually I wouldn’t spend so much but the colors are gorgeous and I don’t have anything like it.
Oh my gosh, this is such a gorgeous palette! *adds to wishlist*
Tempting..!
For the price of this palete there shouldn’t be a single eyeshadow in here that is a miss. People are already paying for the name mostly when they’re buying this. So when any of the eyeshadows have that dry, patchy texture or bad performance, then it just turns into more of a collection item than a make-up item.
I usually find palettes a bit boring and predictable, but this one is so pretty! Love the pops of color they included.
I really, really like this palette. The golden colour, #3 is just fantastic.
Good that it’s permanent, as the month before Christmas is a costly one.
I’m also a bit weary of customs, just payed for two t-shirts, The handling of the payment is as much as the custom fee. Irritating.
That gold! super gorgeous!
That gold one just punched me in the face in the best way 🙂
Oooh I want this bad.
I really like the color range. Everything looks so pretty! I love the gold and black shadows
These colors are gorgeous! I’ll join in the crowd with my awe of the gold.
#3 and #5 just took my breath away
