Makeup Geek Prom Night Eyeshadow ($5.99 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “pale purple with hints of grey.” It’s a medium-dark, taupe brown with warm undertones and a gray-ish over-tone with a frosted, metallic sheen. It had nice pigmentation with a soft, lightly buttery consistency that applied smoothly and blended easily. The color showed signs of fading after eight hours of wear. Makeup Geek Mesmerized (P, $9.99) is darker. Make Up For Ever I544 Pink Granite (P, $21.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Fall in Lust (LE, $15.00) is lighter. Illamasqua Mystify (P) is warmer. Maybelline Sleek & Spice (95) (LE, $6.99) is warmer, cream. Sleek MakeUP Paradise on Earth (P, $9.99) is brighter. Laura Mercier Sable (P, $22.00) is less shimmery, grayer. Chanel Gri-Gri (101) (LE, $29.50) is grayer. Urban Decay Midnight Rodeo (P, $18.00) is grayer. Urban Decay Bust (P, $18.00) is less shimmery. MAC Earthly (LE, $21.00) is warmer. MAC Hypnotizing (LE, $15.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Makeup Geek Taupe Notch Eyeshadow ($5.99 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “taupe.” It’s a muted, medium-dark brown with warm undertones and a satin shimmer. I didn’t care for this shade, as it was very powdery to work with, which made the color payoff weaker and it prone to fall out during application as well as sheering out. Applied, the color wore well for seven and a half hours. Stila Character (P) is similar. Make Up For Ever S616 Chocolate (P, $21.00) is yellower. Chanel Tisse Rivoli #3 (P) is more shimmery, lighter. YSL Saharienne #3 (P) is darker, more shimmery. Givenchy Taupe Velours (5) (P, $23.00) is a cream product. Divergent Burnt Mahogany (LE) is warmer. Divergent Bold Espresso (LE) is similar. Laura Mercier Rich Cocoa (P, $22.00) is slightly warmer. bareMinerals Toasted Espresso (LE, $14.00) is more shimmery, darker. Urban Decay Factory (P, $18.00) is more shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

Makeup Geek Unexpected Eyeshadow ($5.99 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “matte pale pink brown.” It’s a muted, medium-dark pink-plum with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had a drier, slightly powdery consistency, so it didn’t have the best pigmentation and tended to sheer out when applied to the lid. This is a shade that really needs the help of a primer to perform decently, as it also noticeably faded after six hours of wear. Giorgio Armani #15 (P, $32.00) is more shimmery, brighter. Make Up For Ever S836 Pink Ash (P, $21.00) is lighter. Sleek MakeUP Forbidden (P, $9.99) is warmer. MAC Bruised Sky (LE, $15.00) is darker, grayer. Benefit Rain Check (P, $20.00) is darker, cooler-toned. Inglot #358 (P, $6.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I have Prom Night and Unexpected and I really love both, but find Unexpected to be problematic as well: difficult to pack on even with a short dense brush, get nadda for colour when using a softer brush. This pains me because the colour is gorgeous and I want to wear it. I just took note of your dupe in the MUFE line. The payoff looks excellent and think I will pick it up on next Sephora haul. Thanks!

Christine, how would unexpected compare to tease from naked 2 or limit and nooner from naked 3. Also is macs satin taupe comparable to prom night?

Very much appreciate this post, as I really wanted all of these but now think I will skip them all. Overall I prefer my Garden of Eden palette, which has similar colors. I really wanted Unexpected as a cheaper alternative to some of the MUFE Artist shadows, but seeing the quality I will have to go with Pink Ash.

Oh man these are my kinda colors. Too bad, ’cause I’m pretty committed to only buy A/A+ quality these days. There are too many options to compromise. Wish they’d performed better!

Thank you for the honest reviews Christine. Some YouTube beauty vloggers are starting to review these and claiming to love them so I like to get some other unbiased opinions also!

I love Prom Night! What a shame about the other two shades. Unexpected is a really pretty color, if the texture had been there. Taupe Notch would have been my kind of taupe, but …ugh! Just…ugh!

I don’t have these particular shades from MUG, but I have to say that I was a bit disappointed in a few that I got two months ago. Maybe I had too high expectations… I find them to be very dry and hard to pack on, even though they swatch beautifully! (Not all the ones I got, only a few!!)
Can you think of any colour from the new MUFE shadows that is as vibrant and beautiful as their old #92?

I adore unexpected. I have too much eyeshadow to admit to without looking insane. (as many others who frequent this blog) and I find myself reaching for makeup geek all the time now. I enjoy unexpected as a transition color and find the sheerness of it to be an asset. Its buildable but if I just want a wash of color I don’t have to blend it out forever to soften it. ya know? That MUFE pink ash looks amazing!

aw man, i have high hopes for “unexpected”! was one of the colours I was planning to pick up when purchasing Makeup Geek eyeshadows! I’ll probably pick up one of your suggested dupe colours instead, I absolutely love those types of pinks!
