Makeup Geek Prom Night Eyeshadow
Makeup Geek Prom Night Eyeshadow ($5.99 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “pale purple with hints of grey.” It’s a medium-dark, taupe brown with warm undertones and a gray-ish over-tone with a frosted, metallic sheen. It had nice pigmentation with a soft, lightly buttery consistency that applied smoothly and blended easily. The color showed signs of fading after eight hours of wear. Makeup Geek Mesmerized (P, $9.99) is darker. Make Up For Ever I544 Pink Granite (P, $21.00) is cooler-toned. MAC Fall in Lust (LE, $15.00) is lighter. Illamasqua Mystify (P) is warmer. Maybelline Sleek & Spice (95) (LE, $6.99) is warmer, cream. Sleek MakeUP Paradise on Earth (P, $9.99) is brighter. Laura Mercier Sable (P, $22.00) is less shimmery, grayer. Chanel Gri-Gri (101) (LE, $29.50) is grayer. Urban Decay Midnight Rodeo (P, $18.00) is grayer. Urban Decay Bust (P, $18.00) is less shimmery. MAC Earthly (LE, $21.00) is warmer. MAC Hypnotizing (LE, $15.00) is similar. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Makeup Geek Taupe Notch Eyeshadow ($5.99 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “taupe.” It’s a muted, medium-dark brown with warm undertones and a satin shimmer. I didn’t care for this shade, as it was very powdery to work with, which made the color payoff weaker and it prone to fall out during application as well as sheering out. Applied, the color wore well for seven and a half hours. Stila Character (P) is similar. Make Up For Ever S616 Chocolate (P, $21.00) is yellower. Chanel Tisse Rivoli #3 (P) is more shimmery, lighter. YSL Saharienne #3 (P) is darker, more shimmery. Givenchy Taupe Velours (5) (P, $23.00) is a cream product. Divergent Burnt Mahogany (LE) is warmer. Divergent Bold Espresso (LE) is similar. Laura Mercier Rich Cocoa (P, $22.00) is slightly warmer. bareMinerals Toasted Espresso (LE, $14.00) is more shimmery, darker. Urban Decay Factory (P, $18.00) is more shimmery. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Makeup Geek Unexpected Eyeshadow ($5.99 for 0.064 oz.) is described as a “matte pale pink brown.” It’s a muted, medium-dark pink-plum with subtle, cool undertones and a matte finish. It had a drier, slightly powdery consistency, so it didn’t have the best pigmentation and tended to sheer out when applied to the lid. This is a shade that really needs the help of a primer to perform decently, as it also noticeably faded after six hours of wear. Giorgio Armani #15 (P, $32.00) is more shimmery, brighter. Make Up For Ever S836 Pink Ash (P, $21.00) is lighter. Sleek MakeUP Forbidden (P, $9.99) is warmer. MAC Bruised Sky (LE, $15.00) is darker, grayer. Benefit Rain Check (P, $20.00) is darker, cooler-toned. Inglot #358 (P, $6.00) is darker. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

I have Prom Night and Unexpected and I really love both, but find Unexpected to be problematic as well: difficult to pack on even with a short dense brush, get nadda for colour when using a softer brush. This pains me because the colour is gorgeous and I want to wear it. I just took note of your dupe in the MUFE line. The payoff looks excellent and think I will pick it up on next Sephora haul. Thanks!
oooh..that Armani is nice too.. had to look
I love the color/concept of Unexpected, but it’s just a shade that frustrates me more than pleases me when I use it! Pink Ash is SO pretty. Really great and a rather unique shade.
They kind of remind me of Urban Decay Bordello, though Bordello has more shimmer, the base is very similar.
Christine, how would unexpected compare to tease from naked 2 or limit and nooner from naked 3. Also is macs satin taupe comparable to prom night?
Tease is nothing alike: http://www.temptalia.com/submit-dupe?sbs=1&pid=114523&dupe=183204
Limit is much lighter and pinker: http://www.temptalia.com/submit-dupe?sbs=1&pid=144416&dupe=183204
Nooner is lighter and warmer: http://www.temptalia.com/submit-dupe?sbs=1&pid=144419&dupe=183204
Satin taupe is darker: http://www.temptalia.com/submit-dupe?sbs=1&pid=105751&dupe=183202
Oh some unexpected misses here… Prom Night looks great though.
That one was nice!
Is Prom Night identical to MAC Satin Taupe like the MUG site claims? I already have ST and wonder if it’s worth getting Prom Night, too.
I find Satin Taupe to be darker and richer: http://www.temptalia.com/submit-dupe?sbs=1&pid=105751&dupe=183202
Prom Night and Satin Taupe are nothing alike, IMO.
Prom Night is beautiful. All of them are actually!
I really liked Prom Night!
Finally some colours that is not “crazy”.
Glad ya liked them!
Very much appreciate this post, as I really wanted all of these but now think I will skip them all. Overall I prefer my Garden of Eden palette, which has similar colors. I really wanted Unexpected as a cheaper alternative to some of the MUFE Artist shadows, but seeing the quality I will have to go with Pink Ash.
Pink Ash is sooooo nice!
All these posts are doing is reaffirming my need for MUFE eyeshadows… I need to stop ogling Pink Ash and just get it!
It is a really unique shade at least! 🙂
pink ash at sephora is currently out of stock. darn!
I just hauled Unexpected but haven’t used it yet. I had high expectations for the colour as I love the cool taupey grey purple like shades. I’ll make sure I use a primer and see how it goes! 🙂
Fingers crossed for ya!
Oh man these are my kinda colors. Too bad, ’cause I’m pretty committed to only buy A/A+ quality these days. There are too many options to compromise. Wish they’d performed better!
Same here! Unexpected is a really neat shade, but the quality isn’t there for me.
I’m surprised, my unexpected pan preforms great! It’s buttery and pigmented, a little powdery, but still gorgeous. 🙂
You are so lucky!
Prom Night looks amazing. I’ve yet to try any of the Make Up Geek eyeshadows but I definitely will in the future. x
Let us know how they work out for you!
Unexpected is such a disappointment. Is it similar at all to Mauve from Lorac Pro or either Dusty Rose or Wisteria from Mega Pro? Prom Night is pretty, but it looks more brown than I expected.
I’d say probably LORAC Mauve is the closest of those three!
Good to know. Thank you! 🙂
Thank you for the honest reviews Christine. Some YouTube beauty vloggers are starting to review these and claiming to love them so I like to get some other unbiased opinions also!
Of course! 🙂 I love some of their eyeshadows, but not all of them are winners.
Could you suggest a cool toned quality pallet with a pop of color and a mixture of mats and shimmers? .
Honestly, I don’t think there’s a good one that is permanent, lol… it is pretty rare to find a cool-toned palette, let alone one that’s permanent or even has a mix of finishes!
Glad there were dupes of these poor eyeshadows excluding Prom night….Thanks for taking the time to find dupes for us, it really means a lot us =]
My pleasure, Elise!! xoxo
I love Prom Night! What a shame about the other two shades. Unexpected is a really pretty color, if the texture had been there. Taupe Notch would have been my kind of taupe, but …ugh! Just…ugh!
At least Prom Night worked out, lol!
I’m absolutely gobsmacked over Prom Night. That is one of the most perfect shadows I’ve ever seen. It’s like it’s made for me. OMG.
Awww <3
I don’t have these particular shades from MUG, but I have to say that I was a bit disappointed in a few that I got two months ago. Maybe I had too high expectations… I find them to be very dry and hard to pack on, even though they swatch beautifully! (Not all the ones I got, only a few!!)
Can you think of any colour from the new MUFE shadows that is as vibrant and beautiful as their old #92?
Which two did you get, Tina? Some of them are really great, some are less impressive.
I don’t think there’s a great dupe for #92 in the current range, unfortunately, due to the matte finish!
Prom Night is lovely – it reminds me of Mesmerized – which I also love. The other colours I am not so keen on.
Prom Night I really like, but I tend to favor warmer browns 😉
I adore unexpected. I have too much eyeshadow to admit to without looking insane. (as many others who frequent this blog) and I find myself reaching for makeup geek all the time now. I enjoy unexpected as a transition color and find the sheerness of it to be an asset. Its buildable but if I just want a wash of color I don’t have to blend it out forever to soften it. ya know? That MUFE pink ash looks amazing!
Happy to hear it works well for exactly what you need, Stacey! 🙂
Prom night looks gorgeous, and I actually really like the colour of Unexpected – and that it’s so soft (this colour, strongly on my vampire fact tends to just look hollowing and sickly). However, I’m not so keen on the wear issues… then again, I do see Pink Ash there in the dupes… 😀
I love the concept of Unexpected, just wished it performed better!
I really liked Prom Night. I must check to see if Sephora here have Pink Ash. Lovely!
I hope it does!
aw man, i have high hopes for “unexpected”! was one of the colours I was planning to pick up when purchasing Makeup Geek eyeshadows! I’ll probably pick up one of your suggested dupe colours instead, I absolutely love those types of pinks!
A few readers liked theirs, but it definitely seems to matter if you want it sheerer or not!
