Makeup by Mario Ethereal Eyes Eyeshadow Palette Review & Swatches
Ethereal Eyes
Makeup by Mario Ethereal Eyes 12-Pan Eyeshadow Palette ($68.00 for 0.36 oz.) contains a mix of mattes and shimmers that created a mix of warm-toned neutrals. Individually, the eyeshadows did not seem bad per se, but in practice, the mattes had a tendency to muddy together quite quickly and did not appear to have as much contrast as a result. The shimmers also tended to run into each other, as they appeared a bit lighter and quite reflective on the lid. The formula would work best for someone who would use one shimmer and one or two mattes together.
I also found the palette limiting as it lacked versatility in depth, which was a surprise given that the brand is backed by a makeup artist, so it was both limiting but also quite light-skin leaning rather than being more usable by more skin tones.
Per the brand, the eyeshadows in this palette are supposed to be “sheer to buildable” in coverage.

Formula Overview

Per the brand, the eyeshadows in this palette are supposed to be “sheer to buildable” in coverage. Individually, the eyeshadows did not seem bad per se, but in practice, the mattes had a tendency to muddy together quite quickly and did not appear to have as much contrast as a result.
The shimmers also tended to run into each other, as they appeared a bit lighter and quite reflective on the lid but had fallout over time. The formula would work best for someone who would use one shimmer and one or two mattes together.

Looks like Mario may have lost his way from back in the day when he put together that super well-loved, and deservedly so, palette with ABH. This looks more ColourPop than Mario. No, I don’t mean that as a compliment, either. But, before I yeet it out the door, I’ll have to see what a few of my fellow medium to medium-tan favorite YT’ers experience with it turns out to be.
What a disappointment, especially at that price. Though they’re not 1-to-1 dupes, I get similar vibes from the Persona Identity palette, which performs beautifully.
Thank you for this reivew.
I was lusting HARD for this one. This review brought me to my senses.
Yep , I agree …
I preordered this during the sale and after swatching it in person…
Returned it ….unopened,..
I had glitter everywhere,,,everywhere.
I had this one hanging out in my Sephora wish list- glad I waited for your review first!
I’m so surprised. I picked this up during the VIB sale and absolutely love the two looks I’ve created with it. I’ve had zero issues. I love it.
This has gotten great reviews from almost everyone,Except for the price. I’m glad you like it I’m still going to pick it up. I want those sheer shadows and I can work with powdery mattes no problem
I don’t remember the mattes being excessive powdery. I found they layered and blended with ease. I used the KVD Dazzle shadow stick in All Hail and then added one of the sparkly shades from this palette and it’s so good.
Same, I have had no issues with this one, and well, and love it.
The reviews I read on Sephora’s site were almost all favourable (as with anything, there were those who didn’t like it at all but they were outnumbered by those who really love this palette). Personally, I’m sort of conflicted….I did want this upon first seeing it here but now I’m hesitating because I do put a lot of faith in Christine’s reviews but at the same time, given how I use eyeshadows, I may have no problems at all with this.
I always trust Christine’s reviews and was shocked at how poorly it performed for her. IMO she received a bad batch, there are way too many positive reviews out there for the poor quality to be a systemic issue. I own over 100 palettes, neutrals are not the color story I gravitate to. Pick it up and if you don’t like it return it.
This is so disappointing! I was sure I’d want this but the poor performance kinda put the kibosh on that!
Wow – how disappointing is this palette? For a makeup artist to put this out, it is particularly poor. None of the shades rated well – just disappointment after disappointment.
Shades 8 and 11 were the only ones I liked.
The looks people online have been creating with this palette are incredible, but they used primer and were most successful when using only one or two mattes, and placing them carefully. I’d never been interested in “topper” shadows until I saw Rose Siard (Rose Makeup World on YT) demonstrating different ways to use them. She used white primer for a cool toned look and it was so interesting to hear her explain her process.
Interesting, Do you remember which video of Ms. Siard is?
I absolutely LOVE Rose! I follow her and her brand on IG, @roseandben and her AMAZING best EVER brush line @roseandbenbeauty. So many ppl have raved about her brushes including well known brands owners…I have this palette, I have not used it yet, I’ve thought of parting ways with it but most reviews I’ve seen are just positive & it’s so pretty!…
The poor score is surprising, considering the price point and the fact that none of these neutral colors are typically hard to “get right” (unlike purples, for example). This palette is easily dupable, with much better quality shadows, at lower cost.
I was very attracted to this color story and bought it during the sale and really like it. But I am as you describe. I don’t really separate colors but blend them together and only use one shimmer. I only use 2-3 mattes and tend to mix several of those colors together. I tire of pink, peach or beige in the crease so I mix😊
Oh how I wish I had waited for your review. I too lusted for this, and jumped to get it at my 15% at Sephora. I too thought of his palette with ABH and was so disappointed that it sold out, and was a VERY limited release. So I gleefully snagged it. It’s ok for very subtle day looks, but even over primer, looked worn off after 6 hours. I had quite a bit of fallout with the shimmers. Such a letdown from Mario! Live, learn, then wait for Christine’s review!
Sad that you are having similar issues but I did sigh in relief that I wasn’t alone!
I liked his previous two palettes, so I thought this would be in the same vein, but the formula definitely is inferior!
I’m glad I waited for a review, but I’m not 100% sure I want to remove this from my loves list just yet. I love the colour story sooo much. Seems like a much more wearable version of ND Glam midi for me. I am holding out hope that Patrick Ta releases a colour story similar to this one with muted peach and pink, rosy browns and those stunning wet look toppers with coordinating creams. A truly neutral palette that does not lean either warm or cool toned. That would be MY dream!
Oooh, I’m surprised by the review! I actually did pick this up during the VIB sale and I’ve been enjoying this palette. I know the glitter toppers could be better but I find the formulas to work well so far.
I have this palette and overall, I’d rate it as a B. I got 20% off during the sale otherwise I’d say it’s too expensive. The mattes have a lot of kick up in the pan but surprisingly no fall out when applied. Neither the colors or formula are unique but i don’t think they are bad. The glitters take some playing with – my first time using them, i got glitter all over. When I applied with my finger after spraying some setting spray, the hold was much better and helped with most of the fall out. PMG glitter shades have much more fallout IMO.
This is probably a good palette for someone who wants to wear one or two mattes at a time with the glitter for a pop. I rarely wear more than three shadows at a time.
oh no! And here I thought I had made up my mind to get this (I don’t have any not-expired neutral/everyday palettes at the moment). I still might because I am pale and probably would just use one or two mattes and a shimmer in any given look. But wear time and fallout are still concerns for me. And while relatively sheer application is actually preferable for me (in the crease), I do want it to show up and cover any sign of veins or discoloration that my eye primer fails to. And I have sensitive eyelids so I don’t want to have to do too many swipes with my brushes (hearing from some people that it blends quickly/easily was one of the things that appealed to me) I also worry the lightest matte is too yellow (I was hoping for something like ABH Fresh) and want to make sure the toppers read differently enough on my skin.
I’m sorry this didn’t work out for you, but thank you for the review! I appreciate your thoroughness so much.
I bought this during the sale and have enjoyed it. It’s true, though, you’re not going to get very complex looks with this palette, and it’s true to its namesake. I use about two to three mattes, and pop a shimmer on top with a brush. I find the shimmers apply very well with a brush, and I don’t get fallout. I also haven’t been using the palette with primer.
I don’t think the mattes are poor quality; they’re just so finely milled that they’re too easy to blend, resulting in a muddy look if one isn’t careful. They are so smoothing on the eye, though, and I even used the palette on my mature mom without any textural issues. Regarding the shimmers, they’re a lot like the shimmers in Asian brands, particularly high end lines, which I happen to really love.
My main gripe with the palette is actually the colour story. I thought based on promo images that it would be neutral, but on my skin, it definitely leans warm and a bit smoky. Go figure, everything turns warm on me. But seeming as I hate myself in warm tones, I’m finding I don’t like any of the matte shades and only like the shimmers. That’s a hefty price to pay for shimmers.
Quite nice, but nothing remarkable. Would probably suit a beginner due to its subtlety.
I knew it! Seeing swatches on the web. Temptalia is a great education center! 👏🏻
Most of the YouTube reviews I’ve seen line up with your grading. A very “meh” palette for most.
Great review! I almost purchased this for the sparkling shades but skipped. This review is the reason I love your blog! Honest and unbiased. But there are some glowing reviews on this and a consumer can sometimes get lost in the hype. Right now in this economy its imperative for me to use my money wisely. Thank you so much for reminding me to avoid hype and read reviews from trusted sources!
