Make Up For Ever S742 Tomato Artist Shadow (Blush) Review, Photos, Swatches

Make Up For Ever S742 Tomato Artist Shadow ($21.00 for 0.08 oz.) is a brightened, orange-red with a very subtle golden sheen. Urban Decay Slowburn (P) is more matte, darker. NARS Exhibit A (P, $29.00) is darker, redder. MAC Out for Fun (LE, $20.00) is a cream product, lighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes. (Here are some comparison swatches of eyeshadows.)

This is another shade that’s actually labeled as a blush (compared to “eye shadow” on others), though it is listed as part of the Artist Shadow formula and range. The new Artist Shadow formula is described as a “highly-blendable, gel-powder eyeshadow with vivid color payoff” (guess we’ll substitute eyeshadow for blush!). Like I802 Coral Pink, the texture is truly a mix of gel and powder; it has a slightly creamy feel, but it is very dense and applies and looks more like a powder on the skin. It’s intensely pigmented where the slightest bit goes a very, very long way, while the color wore well for nine and a half hours. I just wish that it was slightly more blendable on the skin; it’s not too difficult, but for a shade this bright and richly pigmented, it would have been very much appreciated.

P.S. — These are supposed to have reduced pricing if you purchase more than one, plus a compact, but I haven’t seen this pricing available online. I spoke with the Make Up For Ever Boutique at Valley Fair (CA), and she said that the LA and NY boutiques will ship anywhere. If you live near a boutique, they have the special pricing in effect. If you buy two or more shades, plus the duo compact, it’s $34 ($17/each), and if you purchase three shades with the trio palette, it’s $44 ($14.67/each). The boutique said they were charging $14.33/each after 3. There is also an 18x and 10x palette available for those who want to fill a larger palette.

Agreed with the other comments that it would look great on dark skin tones, but it looks nice on you too!

On another note, your look reminded me that I really want to try Bobbi Brown Canary Lipgloss. I was a bit worried that the glitter might look slightly too chunky and not blend that well with my natural lip colour, but it looks fine here (albeit with a lipstick). Do you think that would be a problem wearing it on its own?

I don’t have a problem wearing on its own, but it IS very, very gold and sparkly, so it can pull yellow-y in a way on lips (which may or may not be your thing). I wear it on its own, but I probably wear it over other lipsticks most often – there are other shades of the High Shimmer formula that I prefer alone, I’d say 🙂

Whoa… That’s really vibrant. Not a color I’d wear on my eyes, maybe on cheeks.
On another hand, I really love the monochromatic orange look on you. 🙂

I tweeted Sephora this morning, actually, because I am really quite ruffled about it NOT being available online and a reader confirmed her freestanding Sephora had the pricing. Make Up For Ever just replied to my tweet this afternoon and said it is going to be fixed.

No, I don’t have anything remotely like it. I have a couple sheer, bright corals, but nothing this red. I’ve never seen blush quite this color. I wonder if it would look clownish on really light skin? Of course, I’d totally use it as an eyeshadow. I may have to get this.

u did it again . No one , not even movie actors rock all the looks they sport. You, my dear, nailed this look wit this very bold blush not for the faint of heart. Love it. U look beautiful

You did this with such a light, deft hand. It looks drop dead gorgeous on you! Is Kevyn A’s Fira in this family, too? Also, local stores don’t carry any of the UD ‘permanent’ blushes any more, just the Naked triplets + stand alone bronzers. Think I’ll check the UD site. Since you got a perfect app, I’d be curious to know what brush you used, even though it’s probably a ~hodo that I would have to sell my soul to buy…

I just bought three eyeshadows at Sephora in NYC (42 & 7th) and I was charged $14.33 so they are discounted from $21. I wound up purchasing S-924 (purple), I-628 (reptile), and I-824 (ocher pink). You definitely need to see them in person because the swatches on Sephora online aren’t the best. I originally intended to buy a diamond finish but didn’t really care for it once I swatched it. There are boatload of beautiful colors so I would recommend checking them out.

Thanks for the heads up, Christina! I wrote this to another reader, but — I tweeted Sephora this morning, actually, because I am really quite ruffled about it NOT being available online and a reader confirmed her freestanding Sephora had the pricing. Fingers crossed it sorts out soon, because $21 vs. $14.33 is a huge difference.
