I wish they did something with the packaging!! At least make it red! So sad. The possibilities for a gorgeous looking collection was wasted.

I guess this is one way to get your hands on Copperplate, now that MAC has discontinued the Matte2 shadows! I had to smile, looking at that e/s palette – I already have 6 of the 9 shadows in it and the other 3 are shades I don’t really want. I guess it’s primarily aimed at newer customers or collectors.

Another missed packaging opportunity. Boxes, yeah, but why not carry the Asian inspired red and black onto the actual product? Come to think of it, most of the MAC I got last year WAS for the packaging design. And was I annoyed to have to sticker up my own Nose for Style with pups.

Aww boo. I wish MAC did cool packaging for these Chinese calendar years, like the Year of the Snake lipsticks. I’m totally in love with that promo image though and would love something like that for the wall. I think I’m going to get this x9, depending on what else is released at the same time! This one has a lot of colors I’ve been wanting.

Thought a bit more about the boring packaging — I think MAC must release this collection to capitalize on the spending and gifting associated with Chinese New Year (“CNY”) — a potentially HUGE consumer market. I see other brands doing CNY releases and it’s like we’re seeing the Christmas-ification of the holiday. If giving “lucky” (i.e. things with red or gold) CNY gifts becomes a thing, i.e., if we Hallmark/Christmas-ify the holiday, then that’s over a billion potential consumers, in gross numbers.

Envelopes of money (討紅包 / 逗利是) and potentially fruit are traditional CNY presents, but sometimes people will buy a whole new outfit to start the year off fresh. If it’s someone’s birth year (on the 12 year repeating cycle), there is a popular superstition to wear red everyday for that year, to lock in luck for the coming 12-year cycle. Red symbolizes luck (and so does gold, which symbolizes monetary luck — almost interchangeable with luck in Chinese culture). Knowing Chinese consumption, the detailing of the actual item within the package is not nearly as important as the fact that it is a brand name item with a red exterior package, since the likely intent of the purchaser would be to buy this to give as a symbolic gift to another person. The recipient would take the new item, and could wear the “new” thing throughout the year.

TL;DR version — MAC can realize a significant profit even if they are lazy and don’t expend much effort with the design or packaging here.

Idk, maybe it’s just me but I think they could’ve done a lot better color scheme wise. Like the promo pic looks great, but the actual colors of the products disappoint me.
Year of the Rooster – I think some red eyeshadows, orange eyeshadows, an amplified yellow lipstick, amplified gold lipstick, and an orange blush all would’ve been nice to see in the collection.
Plus, like others above me have said – it would’ve also been nice if they transferred the print on the box to product packaging too. Or at least made it red and black. Missed opportunity right there.
I was really interested in this collection until now after seeing the colors and just being disappointed.

? if the only new thing about this collection is that it is a collection of existing items the least you can do is kill the packaging. Seems like very little planning went into this. Why even bother.

i won’t be getting anything from this collection….only because i already have all the eyeshadows and lipsticks, and flour power blush.

obviously i think all the shades in the collection are beautiful, as is the imagery and outer packaging.

tbh i don’t really care that mac didn’t flash up the packaging — the embossed patterns for previous chinese new year was cool, but what i like about these collections is that they just remind you about the great items in mac’s permanent collection. i don’t really want everything to be new all the time…i think this might be really good for someone just getting into makeup, or into the brand….and for me, a way of mixing up the shades i already have in a slightly different way.

I’m so sad! I’m Year of the Rooster and would’ve picked up a few pieces if the product itself had some Asian design on it. The promo pic and box itself has pretty design/colors, why did MAC get lazy and not do it on the product itself? And these are all permanent repromotes, nothing LE or unique. The only good thing is that I’m fairly new to MAC , so I don’t have a lot of their shadows yet, so that shadow palette might be a good deal if the quality is decent and the colors are flattering

How is this a Chinese New Year collection???? Almost everything is permanent or a repromo… because it has pretty boxes? At the very least they could have done something with the packaging… such a wasted opportunity, Chinese art has some truly beautiful imagery.

Kirsten Avatar

Oh, I really like this collection. It’s very cohesive. I was tempted by the x9 palette until I realized I already have half the colors in it.

I was so excited..for a second. Just the exact same items in a different paper box? That’s it?! The Year of the Snake collection (especially the lipsticks) was probably my favorite thing MAC has ever come out with, and I’ve been more and more underwhelmed each year since. :/ Thanks for uploading these pics, Christine!
