From WWD:

MAC Cosmetics has teamed up with Sanrio Global Consumer Products to create a Hello Kitty color cosmetics collection.

The line will arrive on MAC’s Web site Feb. 10, in North American stores on Feb. 12 and into overseas stores in March.

“MAC has been mining pop culture since the brand was founded,” said John Demsey, group president of the Estée Lauder Cos. Inc. “This is a sexy and innocent fashion line, and a true MAC moment. In these times, everyone can use a little fun — and a little Kitty.”

“The partnership was a no-brainer,” said James Gager, senior vice president and creative director of MAC Worldwide. “We cater to people who love to play with makeup.”

While in many licensing partnerships, the licensor shops his or her property around, MAC went after Sanrio, Hello Kitty’s owner, to do the deal. “They had never done makeup before, and I was certain that all those women who already own a bit of Hello Kitty would also want to own branded makeup,” said Gager.

“We are thrilled to partner with a brand that shares the vision of offering an innovative, authentic and transforming experience to our loyal fan base,” said Janet Hsu, president of Sanrio. Sanrio’s worldwide retail sales of licensed products for 2007 is estimated at $5 billion.

While the 34-year-old Hello Kitty character is usually assumed to be a cat, she is actually a girl, according to Sanrio. And a girl without a mouth, so she “speaks from the heart,” the company said. “She may not have a mouth, but she’s going to sell a lot of lipstick,” cracked Demsey, noting that a waiting list for the items will go live on Jan. 7 at maccosmetics.com.

“To me, MAC Hello Kitty embodies the ultimate beauty icon,” said Jennifer Balbier, senior vice president of product development for MAC Worldwide. “She’s sweet and sexy, slightly edgy, and appeals to a wide range of customers. We wanted to reflect that through a sweet side, but also something slightly mischievous when it came to the colors. I started out by creating a palette of pinks, since they fit and always trend well in the spring. And this look is so much about the eyes that we did two eye shadow quads.” The Lucky Tom quad has violet blue, brown, gold and pink-coral shades, while the Too Dolly palette has mint, blue-silver, pale pink and magenta shades.

“We incorporated glitter eyeliners because she loves anything that twinkles, and we took the coral and hot pink theme and did pretty, poppy [colored] blush,” added Balbier.

While this collection is intended to have a sophisticated presentation, MAC hopes to appeal to younger fans with two shades of lip conditioners.

The Hello Kitty offerings fall into two collections: the Hello Kitty Colour Collection and the more high-end Hello Kitty Kouture. The bulk of the items are in the former category: six shades of lipstick with names like Fashion Mews and Strayin’, each $14; six Lipglass shades, each $14; and two tinted lip conditioners, $14.50 each; two eye shadow palettes, which each contain four shades and retail for $38; two shades of pigment are $19.50 each, and two Reflects Glitter stockkeeping units — one blue, one pink — are $17.50 each. Four Glitter Eye Liners, each $16.50, two shades of Beauty Powder, each $22; three shades of nail polish, each $11; a black mascara, $12, and false lashes, $12, round out the color offerings. Shades range from pinks and turquoises to lavenders and greens.

Hello Kitty Kouture is intended to be the high end of the collection. Two shades of Dazzleglass, each $28, each feature a reusable silver chain pendant with Hello Kitty outlined in white Swarovski crystals on black with a pink crystal bow. Sheer Mystery Powder, $90 and available in three shades, is packaged in a silver powder compact with Hello Kitty outlined in white Swarovski crystals with a pink crystal bow on a black background.

“We wanted to have affordable luxury and a high-low aspect, so it made sense to do the Hello Kitty Colour Collection and Hello Kitty Kouture,” said Demsey.

The Hello Kitty Colour items, a Petite Makeup Bag, $22, and a medium Makeup Bag, $35, will be in all doors, currently about 581 department and specialty stores in North America including Nordstrom, Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s, as well as MAC’s 138 freestanding stores in North America and at maccosmetics.com. Internationally, the items will be in 1,307 doors in 69 countries, including 296 MAC freestanding stores outside North America. Hello Kitty Kouture will be available at MAC stores and maccosmetics.com only. At the maximum, the collection will be available for eight weeks.

A plush doll, $42; purse mirror, $22, and three-brush collection, $49.50, will be available at MAC stores, Nordstrom doors and maccosmetics.com only. A mirrored key clip, $16; beaded bracelet, $34, will be sold in MAC retail stores and at maccosmetics.com only, and a tote, $45 and soft vanity kit, $55, will be exclusive to maccosmetics.com. These items are intended to animate the counter presentation and create an entire Hello Kitty world at retail, Gager noted.

While none of the executives would discuss sales projections, industry sources estimated that the limited edition MAC Hello Kitty collection could do upwards of $12 million in North American retail sales. That projection is slightly larger than that of the hit Barbie collection.

In-store visuals, shot by Nick Knight, show the polar opposite aspects of the collection. One is an image of a blonde model holding a black vinyl Hello Kitty doll, which will be part of the accessory line. The other visual is what Gager terms “more of a dominatrix creature.” The point, said Gager, is to show that makeup can be transformative. Makeup was done by Val Garland, with hair by Sam McKnight.

And Demsey promises the surprises aren’t over yet. “There will be more products to come in the next three months with this partnership,” he said.

never mind 400-700 depending if u just get the cheaper half it would be like 400 but if you get the cheaper half and the more expensive half it be like 700 oh now im rly gonna go broke

Cath Avatar

Same here… HK originated from Japan so I was expecting the colours to be more ‘japanese’. If you look at the popular colours in Japanese cosmetics, they are more gentle and soft. A little disappointed. There are HK cosmetics in the market. Just low quality. But their packaging is cuter and sweeter than MAC’s. Yah… disappointed.

amberlights Avatar

This collection IS adorable, but I do disagree on one thing: Hello Kitty is many things – cute, adorable, sweet – but I would never think of her as SEXY! hahaha

Amanda Avatar

Oh no, I’m gonna be broke!!! There’s so much I want from this collection! I might have to skip the next few collections so I can indulge in this one guilt free. It looks fantastic! I can’t wait to see the colours in full!

DevilishDoll Avatar

I’ll probably end up getting some lipsticks, lipglasses, an eyeshadow palette and some pigments. Pink, purple, blue and green are all of my favorite makeup colors.

Brianne Avatar

OMG I cannot wait for this. This will be the first MAC collection in a while I’m really excited about. Everything looks amazing!

I do have a bone to pick though about believing that innocent + sexy mixes. I wouldn’t call this collection either (it’s just really cute).

Aprilrobin Avatar

I completely agree. It is super cheap dollar store or claire’s boutique looking stuff.

I certainly won’t be buying it for the packagaing if at all.
I think I’d be kind of embarrased to be seen using it.

I’m not a Hello Kitty fan but I thought they’d make something more luxe looking like they did with Barbie.

Lynn Avatar

I find myself not wanting alot of things after seeing the product pictures. hopefully the colour story will help me to decide whether to get anything.

Joanne Avatar

FINALLY. I can’t believe all this stuff comes out so soon after Christmas. . .I best start saving now!

Btw, totally not paying for a $90 compact. . but I’d like to see what it looks like 😉 Those lipsticks/lipglasses look fabulous!

Claudia m Avatar

Wow, as a life-long Hello Kitty lover (who’s been shoving it down my niece’s throat for 8 years now) I DO NOT LIKE. When has Hello Kitty had black as a main color? I know that’s a MAC thing, but obviously if they change it up for diff. collections, like Dame Edna, then why not keep the white for Hello Kitty? And her secondary color is red, not pink. Even on the bags her bow is red, but on the plush and the compact it’s pink. It looks cheap to me =(
I would’ve loved it if it were a little more plain/simple with just a touch of the Hello Kitty logo.
This sucks, I was so excited about this last night that I told my sis and she cut me off and said “..and you’re gonna get a ton of it, right?” I guess I’ll check it out, but so far I’m not feeling it.

Dee Avatar

The Black Hello Kitty is so CUTE! But am I the only one shocked that Kitty isn’t a cat, but a girl? I really, never ever knew that.

I’m not sure about any of these colors, but I’m sure I’ll get something. And that Dazzleglass better be specatular and huge for 28 dollars.

Shefali Avatar

This collection actually looks cuter and sleeker than I thought it would be. New Dazzleglasses? Beauty powders? Pigments? Swarovski crystal encrusted things? Holy crap…I’m saving up. Thought I was going to pass on this totally…but not anymore.

victoria Avatar

oh so cute, my daughter doesn’t like putting on makeup but she can’t stop starring and touching my barbie compact and she’ll probably want me to get these. at first i thought hello kitty might be pink and childish but this isn’t too bad, looks like they put a bit more effort with the design.wish i could see the color story to see if i could actually use the colors. i couldn’t use any of the heatherette colors:( the l/s and compacts look cute but i won’t be getting the bags because it looks like something you get at the sanrio store.

Vivian Avatar

NOOO, what happened to HK’s cute face, the black looks too edgy for Kitty and too wrong! I know MAC is trying a different approach to depict HK in MAC GOTH collection. But, this collection didn’t excite me much. As I’d like more high-fashion looking bling, instead of cheap looking one.

BUT I will check them out if they ever arrive at my local MAC next year. (they didn’t have arora colection coming this year, mumbles)

All in all, it’s okay if they put a twist in the designs, but the doll is messed up I don’t see the cherryful little Kitty.

Kate Avatar

This doesn’t appeal to me at all. When I think of Hello Kitty, black is probably the last color I think of. And is it just me or does it seem like M.A.C. keeps resurrecting the same old colors? The l/g shades look the same as in the Manish Arora Collection and every LE Collection has a mid-tone, blue-pink shade.

nikki Avatar

ive been waiting for this image for soo long and i have to say i am not too impressed…i thought the products were going to be more cutesy. i do need to see the rest of the products though so i am still excited! the high end collection sounds ammaazzinng, but expensive!!!

vampyvarnish Avatar

Not even my 10 year old step-daughter likes Hello Kitty and I have to say personally, I think anyone over the age of 22-23 who is a fan has a questionable maturity level! I mean it’s cute like all stuff geared towards kids, but come on, it doesn’t say MAC to me at all. MAC is sexy and hot Hello Kitty is pink and white and childish. Ick.

Claudia m Avatar

Omg, I know I’m a little more sensitive right now because I’m PMS-ing, but calling anyone over the age of 22 who likes HK immature? Holy crap! At the risk of being booted and banned from Temptalia, why don’t you get your boring and condescending butt to a Bobbi Brown site? Or someone equally bland. You have obviously never heard of the phrase “young at heart” I guess!! I don’t mean to speak for everyone here, but if we only liked serious, mature looks, we plain and simple wouldn’t visit Temptalia. Or are you just overlooking all the colorful looks like purple, green, and omg, orange?!!!! How about them mixed together, oooh, scary. Nope, actually, I have the feeling you might call that tacky or even clown-ish.
I despise being labeled or lumped together into any category. I loved HK when I was a little girl, and I still like it to this day. I’m not going to sport a pink HK purse, but I might a MAC compact with its image on it.
INSULT THE PRODUCT ALL YOU WANT, BUT NOT PEOPLE WHOM YOU’VE NEVER MET AND HAVE NO IDEA WHO THEY ARE.

vampyvarnish Avatar

Wow you took that very seriously! I said it was my opinion which I think I am entitled to. I don’t like Bobbi Brown and I have been wearing MAC for 15 years and they are far and away my favorite makeup line. I don’t like plain and simple looks either and if you read my post, I never said I didn’t like the colors. I said I didn’t like the idea of it being Hello Kitty. I love how you are all in an uproar about me judging people who like Hello Kitty when they are older, yet you are assuming I think people who wear color are tacky and clownish. Next time before responding maybe you should read what I actually wrote instead of making assumptions about me. I’m not going to respond to this anymore because I’m not into flaming on other people’s sites.

Lauren Avatar

You should re-read what your write. It could be offensive to some people. It came off quite rude. You just insinuated that most of the people that replied to this post are immature. Or tht is how it sounded.

vampyvarnish Avatar

I’m sorry you feel that way Lauren, I’m not trying to be rude at all, but Temptalia is asking our opinions here on this collection and I gave mine. I didn’t ask for other people’s opinion on my opinion. I didn’t assume most people who reply to this post are immature, if you read the posts, a lot of people don’t like the collection. And I don’t go flaming on people in caps and blame it on PMS (which is incredibly sexist) when I don’t agree with what they say. They are entitled to their own ideas and I completely respect that and they should respect me as well.

Claudia M. Avatar

Very well said! 100% in agreement! I took that comment the same way you did. I like colors and I am way over 22-23 years old and, by the way, I am also mature and intelligent.

Vee Avatar

“I think anyone over the age of 22-23 who is a fan has a questionable maturity level!” I disagree with your comment and frankly think that although it’s your opinion and you have a right to it, it’s rude. And I’m not a HK fan.

Christine Avatar

Hi all,

I understand some people finding the original poster’s comment offensive, but let’s keep the comments on topic. The OP said she didn’t mean to offend other readers, and I think it’s best to leave it at that!

Thanks,

Manda Avatar

I heard that there will be a waiting list for this collection??? That you can join on Jan 7th???? Is this true?!?! Is this collection gonna be like impossible to get?? Sigh, I need it hahaha

katee Avatar

I totally agree with Vampy Varnish. I think Hello Kitty is for little girls! I think MAC is showing questionable judgement right now. Dame Edna? Hello Kitty?? Come on! MAC is supposed to be sexy and daring. These 2 collections are lame My opinion, which I am entitled to.

Sheila Avatar

Actually, I’m a 26 year old female and I’ve loved and owned Hello Kitty products since I was 3 years old. While some of the products are geared towards children, Hello Kitty itself has become a brand that sells across all age lines. Take a look at the vast variety of things offered. From clothes to toys to kitchen appliances to computers and electronic accessories, decorating items and accessories. Even Apple has recognized the selling power of Hello Kitty. So have countless apparel companies that don’t cater to ‘little girls’.

It transcends the ideal of “just for little girls”. It’s a way of blending sophistication and whimsy. Don’t underestimate this brand that has survived for decades and been extremely profitable. MAC is probably going to make a killing this holiday season.

And yes, I will be getting this.

Manda Avatar

I think it is daring for MAC to step outside the box with Dame Edna then Hello Kitty.. if anybody can pull it off it’s MAC! 🙂 I’ll be buying some from both!

Catherine Avatar

Ok, I don’t even like Hello Kitty that much (Mamegoma and Chococat are WAY cuter!) and when I first heard the rumors, I was skeptical, but I squealed when I saw this. I’m twenty, and I love all things cute and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I actually find myself wishing that I wore pressed blushes/powders so I could get one of the compacts, but I don’t and the colors from this collection sound a little too crazy for me (I’m boring and don’t actually wear eyeshadow except for really big events, so sue me). I’m really, really, really hoping that one of the glosses or lipsticks will be safe enough for me though.

Tekoa Avatar

*falls over* MAC and cats! Kittens on makeup…. a plethora of feline finery. While I am indifferent about Hello Kitty, I fall heart over head for cat related things.

I might get everything.

Sunshine Avatar

I’m kind of disappointed 🙁 This is not cute at all. Where is a signature baby pink packaging of Hello Kitty? Why everything is so boring black??? It doesn’t look like Hello Kitty to me, it’s a different creature. I’d call it MakKitty. Will probably skip and just slap HK stickers on regular black compacts I have 🙂 And I see no pinkish-lavender-violet lip products, what’s up with that? Isn’t HK’s home in extravagant Japan? Everything seems like Barbie collection dupes except maybe eyeshadows which look like potential Dame Edna dupes…
Hint to the future: I hope MAC would come up with shiny, hot sunflower yellow packaged lipsticks and compacts some day, then I’d get totally excited! Or maybe seafoam blue aqua or fresh apple green? 😀 Just not all black please…

Hollie Avatar

THIS IS SO FREAKIN’ CUTE! I love it all, and want all of the bags and the little hello kitty. I probably won’t go all crazy on the makeup unless it’s colors I like. 28 dollars for a dazzle glass is crazy! So it 90 dollars for the mystery powder. Glad I am more sensible and not one to buy just for packaging. =] I do want a majority of it though!

Phoebe Avatar

BUT ITS BLACK, ITS LIKE DEAD GOODBYE KITTY, HELLO KITTY IS SUPPOSED TO BE GIRLY PINKS, REDS, ORANGES AND SOMETIMES BLUES AND GREENS, BUT BLACK IS AS SHE’S JUST DIED, ITS LIKE MAC IS CELEBRATING HER FUNERAL!
SORRY!

Sarah Avatar

I LOVE HK, but seeing the packaging…I’m not super into this collection. I’m all for HK w/ an edge, al la Tarina Tarantino or Tokidoki, but this just doesn’t look inspired. It’s like they think they can slap HK on any old thing and we’ll just buy it…

Maude Avatar

I have to say i’m a bit disapointed. I was hoping to see something like the Barbie or Fafi collection. This collection seriously looks like a dollart store. And wow..90$ for a mystery powder it’s way too much. It’s only makeup which is not gonna last forever.

j Avatar

this mac/hello kitty collection is made for dolls who love to collect both mac and hello kitty, it’s expected to be expensive duh!!! ur not buying cheap make up! plus it’s sanrio collaboration!

Luana Barroso Avatar

OMG! That LUCKY TOM QUADS was used on NY FASHION WEEK!
The blush FUN AND GAMES as also used on NY Fashion week, so I guess this is also a HELLO KITTY for MAC product? I’m right?

Melody Avatar

I have mixed feelings about this collection…I love HK, but I was hoping for the pink/white tradional girly innocent HK look with a Japanese flair, and perhaps some of the other characters such as Chococat thrown in too. Oh well…I’m sure I’ll find something I like though…lol.

Does anyone know if the $90 Couture compacts are refillable? Cuz for that kinda cash, they better be!!! 😮

mars Avatar

Hello Kitty and I are the same age, I’ve been collecting the entire time. Much of it has been passed on to my daughter but there’s still a lot that I love. Hello Kitty is known for pastels in it’s packaging although I have plenty of black, red, leopard print in my HK collection. I love the packaging it’s exactly what I expect MAC Hello Kitty to be. Barbie was the same way–MAC black with Barbie pink.
For those of you planning to buy this collection, go to your local MAC location and be sure to put in your order asap.

Nadya Avatar

Firstly, VampyVarnish – you’re very rude. Is there an age limit on liking a cute, cartoon cat? Well, thats news to me.
Before you start, i’m 17 and realise that it doesn’t involve me, but in 5 years when i HAVEN’T stopped loving Hello Kitty, then it will involve me.
Secondly, for you guys that don’t like the packaging, i think MAC’s aim was to combine their sexy, daring, edgy appeal with Hello kitty’s cute one. Hence it being black, but still cute. I think if the packaging was pink and white, like usual Hello Kitty products, people who weren’t in the knowlege, would think that they were JUST hello kitty, rather than a partnership between the two.

Sreyne Avatar

To tell you the truth l dont know how l really feel about this line..kinda on the border line. Packing : glad its not so cutesy and girly but it seems a little to dark as well l think with all the crystals talk l kinda envisioned something a little more elegant. The colors l think might be a little to bright for “ME” l mean lm into colors too but ….hmmm just dont know what to think. Howver l do have to say that lm really glad l didnt fall head over heels with this collection when the pics came out l was orginially expecting to buy everything which would run me 800-900 and thats just a little crazy lol but you know us makeup addicts will just have to eat noodles for 2 months lol. I will make my final judgement when l see some swatches or more close up pics of the collection.

cloudburst Avatar

I like the packaging – I think I would have liked the doll better if she were traditionally white, but I can see how MAC would want to make their HK stuff unique. It would have been cute if they had dressed her up like a MAC MA, all in black with a MAC necklace or something and one of those “tool belts”.

Anyways I’ll probably get the e/s palettes & some lipglosses, maybe even a compact…why not? It’s cute & fun.

Shar Avatar

That’s pretty extreme!lol!

On a personal note – I don’t love the packaging. I wanted a cuter look. I might pick up the bracelet though and, at most, maybe the orange gloss.

Rowan Avatar

Awwww the doll is so cute! Her little paw his hugging the pallet! ^_^ I prefer to keep kitsch off my face though. The orange lipglass looks nice though, if it’s sheer I’ll get it as memorabilia 🙂

winnie Avatar

I thought the packaging would be cuter, I know for sure I will be getting the blush, beauty powder and maybe one of the lipsticks. Glad I won’t be going overboard as I thought I would do when I first heard about the collaboration!!

Okay, this packing is cute, but the products in the Dame Edna collection are hot! I want that beauty powder, the purple shadows, and the purple lipstick. This stuff looks okay, but the colors in Dame Edna are on fire!

Lauren Avatar

I dont want people to buy all the stuff and sell it for ridiculous prices on ebay:'(.
What will I have to do to get my hands on this. Rawr-_-

Hello Kitty (??????, Har? Kiti?)[1], is one of the best-known of many simply drawn fictional characters produced by the Japanese company Sanrio. Designed by Ikuko Shimizu, the first product, a vinyl coin purse, was introduced in Japan in 1974, and in the United States in 1976.

AKA HELLO KITTY ORIGINATED FROM JAPAN.

Get it right.

I personally think this is adorable
i read alot of these comments and WOW
I personally feel that if you like hello kitty DO NOT be ashamed
just becuase hello kitty started as a young girls idol doesnt mean it cant take on a more mature look
and MAC is perfect enough to do it
just because i like disney when i was a kid doesnt mean im not gonna go to disney world
i am not gonna be buying hello kitt hot pink lunch boxes but im defenetly picking up some of this collection
this is defenetly a more subtle way to show your love for hello kitty and MAC
so i say why not?
no ones gonna judge you because a cute pink lipstick is in a sleek Hello Kitty/ MAC container

Well let me first say I am a huge fan of hello kitty. But the products look cheap and they sell for wayyyyy too much. I mean,,who would sell a cheap looking product for like…what is it…90 bucks?? I mean come on. But on the positive side I think the black instead of original white and red packaging looks edgy and bold. I’m still going to buy hello kitty products but not from here.
