MAC Apricot Blend Studio Sculpt Shade & Line Review, Photos, Swatches
MAC Apricot Blend Studio Sculpt Shade & Line
MAC Apricot Blend Studio Sculpt Shade & Line ($21.00 for 0.06 oz.) contains a peach and copper eyeshadow with a brown eyeliner. The Studio Sculpt Shade & Line Eyeshadows can be used wet “for a defined look with super-saturated colour” or dry for “medium buildable coverage.” When you work with Apricot Blend dry, it can be powdery and the two eyeshadow shades had a tendency to sheer out during application very easily, so I felt like you really had to layer and pack on the eyeshadows to get them to stay. Working with them damp made the color truer-to-pan and created less fall out/excess powder. The eyeliner shade was stiff and much more difficult to use, regardless of application method. Apricot Blend wore well for eight hours before fading.
Apricot Blend #1 is described as a “champagne beige.” It’s a golden champagne with warm undertones and a frosted finish. Applied dry, it was semi-opaque, and applied damp, it was mostly opaque but more metallic. There are so many shades that are very, very similar to this, as it is a more basic shade — see comparison swatches / view dupes.
Apricot Blend #2 is described as a “dirty berry brown.” It’s a medium-dark, red-toned brown with a pearly sheen. Applied dry, it was very stiff and difficult to blend and had semi-opaque color coverage. Applied damp, it was easier to work with but still felt stiff, and it had more opaque pigmentation. I tried using it as an eyeliner as well as an eyeshadow, but performance was the same either way. Too Faced Soleil (P, $16.00) is more shimmery, warmer. Makeup Geek Country Girl (P, $5.99) is lighter. Makeup Geek Cocoa Bear (P, $5.99) is less shimmery. Anastasia Sienna (LE) is more orange, less shimmery. MAC Beautyburst (LE, $15.00) is darker, less shimmery. Guerlain Turandot #3 (LE) is darker. Guerlain Turandot #2 (LE) is a touch lighter.Guerlain Les Fauves #2 (LE) is warmer. See comparison swatches / view dupes.
Apricot Blend #3 is described as a “warm coral peach.” It’s a light-medium, peachy orange with a satin finish. It had good color payoff when applied dry, and it was slightly darker and more intense when applied damp. Tarina Tarantino Trumpette (LE) is more shimmery, warmer. Kat Von D Geek (LE) is lighter. Wet ‘n’ Wild Newport Nights #5 (LE) is lighter, warmer. MAC Body Conscious (LE, $15.00) is darker. Chanel Pearl River #4 (LE) is more shimmery, brighter. See comparison swatches / view dupes.

It looks beautiful! Perfect spring shades.
xx
Glad you liked it, Mira!
Hey Christine!!!
The middle shade is a different formula than the other two because it is meant to be used wet as a liner and the other two shades are shadows!
I like to really wet my brush and it actually works well!
(I work for MAC!)
Alex:)
Hi Alex,
I used all the shades wet and dry – I mentioned in the beginning of the post as well that two shades are eyeshadows, one is an eyeliner. I had to have a sopping wet brush to get any color out of the eyeliner, and even then, it dries almost instantly and is a complete pain to get even, opaque, smooth color as an eyeliner or otherwise. I’m glad you’re liking yours – but I didn’t have the same experience you did, unfortunately.
Although, to be fair, MAC simply describes the formula in general as a wet/dry formula that can be used either way – and the eyeshadows definitely have use wet or dry, but the eyeliner is pretty much useless except used with a really wet brush–then it was only moderately difficult to deal with.
I don’t love mine…:P
But I do think it will be good for a certain clientele that doesn’t necessarily have so much experience with make up and is looking for something convenient and easy!
funnily enough these are the kinds of products we sell most of in our store:)
love your blog!!
xox
I’m not really surprised that these would sell well! What’s funny is that they’re barely being talked about online!
I like the colour of the liner in concept, but the execution seems to have been a bit of a miss…! Hopefully some of the other combos will be a bit more forgiving 🙂
I think they billed these as super versatile, but they didn’t end up quite so versatile…
very nice! but hard to justify the price
There’s not much product in there!
I’m SO glad that you are reviewing these. They are the first MAC products that I’ve been excited about in a very long time, and it’s been hard to keep myself from ordering a couple of them before reading some reviews.
What shades are you most excited for?
oh dear… how do they actually release these with such poor payoff!
I don’t know 🙁
I was only mildly interested in these to begin with, because I thought they might make a relatively lower-priced combination option from MAC for travel, but as you noted Christine, the colors weren’t all that original and now that the quality looks just “eh”, I think I’m all set to skip these.
Not a bad call – so far, I am not impressed.
Wouldn’t be my first choice. Too orangey. Okay, so I wonder if there some issue with the middle eyeshadow since this is the second review where that particular shade completely bites. Makes me wonder if the process is affecting performance. Weird.. because they are both soooo bad.
MAC doesn’t call out the eyeliner as *having* to be used wet, as they just call the formula a wet/dry one, dry for sheerer color, wet for more intense… (as if all are that way) but the reality is the eyeliner needs to be used totally wet to get any color out. I just found they dried down so quickly that they lack some of the more forgiving qualities of using a powder product as an eyeliner. It would have made more sense to me if the “eyeliner” shade was still usable as either an eyeshadow or as an eyeliner, since it would be more versatile that way.
Am I the only one who thought that by the word line, mac means that the middle shade in the pan is an eyeliner? That would make more sense to me with having a light all over shade, a crease colour and a liner all in one pan.
The middle shade is the “eyeliner” shade 🙂 I used them all wet/dry, but the middle shade, which is the “eyeliner” shade has to be used wet (not just damp). When I tested the eyeliner shade, I wore it as an eyeshadow and as an eyeliner (lower lash line).
Not into the colours, personally!
Phew!
Gee, I wish this had performed better. I love the look of the little compact and these would be a great addition to my collection in these shades, but it doesn’t sound like it was worth it.
It’s not!
I love the colors in this one!
Yay!
Awww… I had a hunch this was going to be the way it performed. The eyeliner part did look really stiff to me! 🙁
It’s too bad your hunch was right on the money!
These aren’t just up to Mac’s normal quality!
They definitely fall short!
I wouldn’t want to shell out $21 on these.
Me neither!
This is the shade I would have gone for, but that liner is just not doing it for me.
The liners are just sad 🙁
Yay! I’m catching up! I’m sorry, this one is also a big thumb down for me. Your eye looks pretty, however you pulled it off. 🙂
Thank you as always, Lotus!
You’re welcome! (the casual cheek and lip colors all worked brilliantly on you, so there’s a silver lining! It’s nice seeing those reviews after these. You just seem relieved. Haha! Other than Nars’ eye pencils, can your face not withstand anything?
Nothing is coming to mind… though I am sure there are a few, lol! MAC Lustre lipsticks can do a number on my lips if I wear too many back-to-back!
Lucky duck! That’s really quite rare. Beauty Blog+One who can get away wearing everything but Nars eye pencils and too many Mac Lustre lipsticks in a row= Meant to be. 🙂
