Swimming in an Endless Sea of Disappointment

L’Oreal Endless Sea Infallible Eyeshadow ($7.95 for 0.12 oz.) is a faded cool-toned blue with a hint of aqua-teal. MAC Sky is similar but has a stronger golden sheen. Tarina Tarantino Ozma is much more teal and darker. Urban Decay Shattered is grayer. Guerlain Les Aquas is lighter, bluer. Urban Decay Aquarius is very similar, slightly more aqua than blue. Inglot #413 is more teal.

The shade that most immediately caught my eye when I first received the new shades was Endless Sea, but it was a complete disappointment.  The color payoff is severely lacking, both when used dry as well as wet; as is typically the case, it is more pigmented when used damp–decent pigmentation–it’s still not where it should be. It’s not the rich, intense color that L’Oreal advertises for the formula.

The texture feels a little drier than some of the other shades I’ve tested, which might account for the poor pigmentation.  It doesn’t bind together as smoothly (even when applied dampened), so it has a tendency to look patchy upon application.  I applied Endless Sea on the lid (next to Golden Emerald, which was superb), and it was sad and faded after ten hours.

Most formulas have a couple of misses, and this one is indeed one of them, but there are some very lovely shades, like Golden Emerald and Smoldering Plum (both reviewed earlier this past week). A cheap product doesn’t mean it’s a bad product–but a cheap product that’s bad is still a waste of your hard-earned money, so I’d avoid this one and opt for one of the better pigmented and better wearing shades mentioned earlier.

For a comparison against Giorgio Armani Eyes to Kill Intense, please see this post. As a quick summary, L’Oreal’s colors can be less nuanced/have less depth, and then the wear seems to be a little more inconsistent with L’Oreal (some wearing fantastically, others creasing/fading more rapidly). The way I look at it (assuming you wear primer, because then the wear is usually fine), the more the merrier!  There doesn’t seem to be a lot of overlap between the color ranges, though–they’re not putting out dupes so much as different shades in a similar formula.

I’m glad I passed on this one. I’ve passed by it several times over the last couple of weeks, but since it’s not a color I wear often, I decided to wait. However, it did catch my eye each time; it’s so beautiful in the pot. I can see even in the product photo the shadow is pulling away from the edge of the pot, which makes it look dry.

I have no issues with pigmentation either, in fact I think it is one of the better performing shades on the range…. I wonder if there are differences between batches?

Elysia Me too! I didn’t have any kind of problems with mine! I’ve been wearing it almost every single day under my lower lashes. It’s beautiful!

Elysia I think it goes on a little sheer when used dry, but it can really be built for even coverage, and I didn’t have fading/creasing either when I wore it on a primer. I love it too!

I think you might have gotten a bad batch. mine is SUPER pigmented. I wore it the other day for well over 10 hours and had to literally scrub it off my lid.

I own this shade and it is very pigmented, rich and shimmering. I wear it over a primer and I get at least twelve crease free, fade free hours out of it after it is applied dry. YMMV. I get fabulous mileage of of this product, myself. 🙂

The dud factor raises its ugly head..  I swear when it comes to makeup sometimes they just leave the cookies in the oven too long..  Know what I mean?  Instead of soft, gooey and chewy, they become hard and shatter when you bite into them.  It’s so sad when this happens, but it can happen to the best of us.

I have this one and I thought it was insanely pigmented. I used it as an eye liner on top of maybelline’s bold gold eye tattoo. It worked amazingly and lasted all day long with out doing that weird thing where it transfers to my crease after  a couple hours. I also wore primer.

Really? I have this and mine doesn’t feel dry at all and the pigmentation is pretty good. Wore it over a primer and used it along with a dark teal green and it only faded a little bit by the end of the day. You may have just gotten a bad eyeshadow; a friend of mine and I both bought pink sapphire and when we compare the eyeshadows hers had better pigmentation than the one I had gotten

Huh, I’ve had great luck with it.  I pulled it out today and wore it just to make sure I wasn’t crazy, but it did great.  The separation from the jar doesn’t necessarily indicate dryness, all of these style shadows that I have really like to stick together–my ETK stuck to itself so well, the first time I opened it, it stuck to the plastic press and itself so well, it all came out attached to it in a clump!  That’s definitely what I consider separated from the jar. XD
My Endless Sea does seem less loose and powdery than Christine’s, more squishy/chunky like other Infallibles and my ETK.  Maybe batch inconsistencies?

Weird I never see people wearing blue eyeshadow, yet a lot of people are saying they like it? Really I can only think of two times I saw someone wearing it.. Ever.. Where are all of you hiding?!:)

MeganBowen Avatar

Rachelcarlene I love wearing blue but I don’t wear it by it’s self. So maybe you just never saw someone wearing it and it made you think on that person is wearing blue eyeshadow.

I’m surprised that you gave this eyeshadow a C-. I have this eyeshadow and I thought that it was very pigmented and I didn’t have any problems at all.
