Kat Von D Ladybird Eyeshadow Palette
Kat Von D Ladybird Eyeshadow Palette

Kat Von D Ladybird Eyeshadow Palette ($36.00 for 0.43 oz.) includes eight eyeshadows and one travel-sized eyeliner. All of the shades (including the eyeliner) are matte. The eyeshadows are supposed to be intensely pigmented, long-wearing and won’t crease, smudge, or fade. The eyeliner is also supposed to be long-wearing and should glide on easily.

Fur Elise is a subtly cool-toned, purpled burgundy with a matte finish. The texture was a smidgen dry, but it will perform better with a fluffier brush. theBalm Sexy is warmer, darker. theBalm Moderato is cooler-toned, darker. theBalm Alice Copper is more shimmery. bareMinerals Nightcap is purpler. See comparison swatches.

Vespertine is a warm-toned, light peach with a matte finish. It had a soft, buttery texture and rich color payoff. Urban Decay Foxy is yellower, less peach. NARS Night Star is slightly darker. bareMinerals Stealth is very comparable. See comparison swatches.

Renholder is a neutral-warm, gray-tinted, medium-dark brown with a matte finish. It seems a little too brown to be a true taupe. It had good color payoff, and the texture was soft and finely-milled without being powdery. theBalm Matt Gallagher is pinker. Urban Decay Wreckage is darker, more shimmery. Urban Decay Naked 2 is lighter. MAC Magical Mist is more shimmery. bareMinerals Namaste is darker, warmer. Bobbi Brown Slate is darker. Bobbi Brown Chino is warmer. See comparison swatches.

Siouxsie-sioux is a darkened, gray-black with a satin finish–it looks mostly matte applied, but there seemed to be a faint shimmer in the pan. It was nicely pigmented and had a good, soft and blendable texture. Urban Decay Spell #2 is more shimmery. theBalm Sexy Stacey is cooler-toned. MAC Tall, Dark, & Handsome is lighter. Estee Lauder Black Chrome #2 is lighter. Urban Decay Gunmetal is more shimmery. See comparison swatches.

Unrequited is a light-medium, muted, peach-orange with a matte finish. The color payoff was true-to-pan, and it had a soft, buttery feel. Urban Decay Moonflower is more shimmery, warmer. NARS Ramatuelle #3 is darker, warmer. MAC Tete-a-Tint is darker. MAC Bare Minimum is cooler, more shimmery. Bobbi Brown Terracotta is darker. See comparison swatches.

Harlow is a warm-toned, medium brown with a yellowish tone and a matte finish. It had good payoff, but the texture was slightly stiff so it is best applied with a fluffier brush. Bobbi Brown Praline is more shimmery. Giorgio Armani Moonlight Beige #2 is cooler. MAC Moleskin is slightly warmer. MAC Wedge is darker. theBalm Allegro is similar. theBalm Sultry is darker, cooler-toned. See comparison swatches.

Wolf is a dark, warm-toned brown with a matte finish. It had good color payoff overall, but it was slightly stiff to work with. Urban Decay Bewitch is more shimmery. NARS Surabaya #2 is more shimmery, warmer. MAC Swiss Chocolate is slightly warmer. Dior Fairy Golds #5 is cooler-toned. bareMinerals Pumped is warmer, more shimmery. Make Up For Ever #17 is warmer, lighter. Inglot #363 is cooler-toned. See comparison swatches.

Cleopatra is a muted copper with hints of brown and a matte finish. It had great pigmentation, and it had a soft, buttery texture that applied evenly and smoothly. Guerlain Les Fauves #2 is darker. NARS Self Portrait 3 #2 is browner. MAC Body Conscious is lighter, more shimmery. See comparison swatches.

Immortal Love is a dark, warm-toned brown with a matte finish. It had good color payoff in a single pass, and it was buildable to opaque color with a creamy, glide-on consistency. It lasted eight hours with some minor, but noticeable, fading. Make Up For Ever #25L is lighter. Bobbi Brown Chocolate is darker. Urban Decay Whiskey is lighter. Urban Decay Bourbon is warmer. MAC Seasonally Spicy is lighter, warmer. See comparison swatches.

Overall, this was a good palette, and for a matte palette, definitely an exceptional one that I’ve come across.  It’s not too warm-toned, though I would say it leans slightly warm as most of the neutrals are warm-toned.  Fur Elise and Siouxsie-sioux were the cooler-toned shades and the non-neutrals as well.  When I tested the palette for wear, I was able to get eight hours of wear, and I started to see some minimal fading after nine hours.

Wow, very autumnal looking! Too bad they didn’t throw in a few more cooler neutrals. It’s hard for me to wear such warm colors!

malinda jane Avatar

This is gorgeous but not something I’d wear in the hot weather, maybe I’ll look into it this fall! The look you created with it is perfection.

beck Avatar

sorry is this LImited edition? I just got the Balm Meet Matte Nude palette, its huge and the shadows are hefty sized! Super value. Will you be reviewing that item?

I dont have Kat palettes maybe I will start with this one.

Danii Avatar

Vespertine reminds me of Anonymous (from the Vice palette, that many disliked because of lack of neutrals) by Urban Decay. They may not be exact matches, but in the pan, it just makes me think of Anonymous! I don’t care for Kat Von D, she became a sell-out and I don’t really care for her products either! Just don’t do ANYthing for me. I also still don’t understand the Vice palette dislikes; UD has three neutral palettes already.

Stephanie Avatar

Totally agree, except I’m noticing a lot of people are getting way more use out of the Basics palette than they thought they would have. Still, I’d rather have this!! 😀

Cat G Avatar

Yeah, I can totally understand why people would use the Basics palette often, especially for creating looks for the workplace. Still, this seems like a great matte palette and it’s neutral enough for my taste while still being interesting!

Ashley Avatar

Yeah. I felt the same. I saw this on instragram before the Basics came out and decided to skip the Basics. I always had W.O.S. and I felt like a couple of the colors in that one looked about the same. I think I’m probably getting more use out of this than I would the basics.

Cat G Avatar

I agree, I feel like I would reach for this a lot, actually and it has a lot of potential to make cool looks that aren’t TOO over the top but still pretty neutral. I’ll have to check it out

Peet Avatar

This is the palette of my dreams. I love the grunge look. I’ve never come across a small palette that has a burgundy, dark gray and rust together… oh, and matte!

daheep Avatar

By any chance, would you know how this compares to the Sleek iDivine Au Natural palette? The colors looks very similar to me, I’m thinking they might be comparable.

sandra Avatar

I have this palette, I love it. I must admit I was a little afraid of the Cleopatra eyeshadow, but once it’s on, it looks quite good. Even my Aunt loves it for the matte colors.

xamyx Avatar

Cleopatra was the *one* shade I thought I would never touch, but it actually works well for me, particularly with bright greens.

Liz Avatar

It’s pretty nice. However, I’m on an eye makeup shopping freeze. A lot of days I don’t wear eyeshadow (and some days I don’t even bother with liner either). So, for now I’m not buying anymore eye makeup.

Hana Avatar

I purchased this but ended up returning it. I generally use urban decay eyeshadows but the lady at sephora convinced me to try this. The colors are warmer than what I normally go for and the texture of the shadows kind of felt thin. They also faded by the end of the work day so I decided not to keep it.

Kelly Avatar

Ooh – I like how it’s an all-matte palette. I have one other Kat Von D Palette and I was very disappointed in the quality of the shadows….but that was a couple of years ago.

It seems like they’ve really worked on the formulas for their eyeshadows. It’s good to know that they’re quite pigmented.

I like the mix of colors as well!

Melissa Avatar

I’m so glad you highlighted and reviewed this palette Christine. I purchased this on a whim a month or so ago from Sephora – an all matte palette always gets my attention. I have dozens and dozens of MAC, Chanel, LMdB … eyeshadows and this palette truly has not left my makeup desk since I purchased it. Several times I was going to put in away and decided to use it instead that day. SO many amazing combinations with these colors – Kat has a youtube video on Sephora with a pretty combo as well. The pigmentation of this palette is crazy and staying power is a solid 8-9 and with primer I get longer.
Anyone debating, you won’t be disappointed!! Also want to mention I don’t think it wears nearly as warm on as it might appear in photos.

Theresa Avatar

OMG!! I’m a sucker for neutrals, I love the swatches from this palette. I shall definitely be buying this. 🙂

Aleia Avatar

Thank you so much for this review :)!! So very excited about this palette now, and the look you created is simply beautiful! Properly going to have to get this 😛

Silvana Avatar

I love matte shadows, and I’ve been eyeing this palette on the Sephora site lately, wanted to purchase during VIB week but it was sold out online….so bummed. Thanks for the swatches!
